We have about 40 computers running windows 95/98. All of the original Win95 and
the Win98 machines can see the samba server perfectcly. The Win95a/b computers
can not see the samba server, or any other computer on the network - however
the other computers can see them. When I double click on the network
neighborhood on the Win95a/b machines, the explorer opens instantly and shows
nothing but the "Entire Network and the HP Printers. TCP/IP is working fine on
them.
Question: since I can not get the Win95a/b computers to see our network, is
there an alternative worth persuing? Note: I have only one non-windows machine
- which is the linux server.

Have you made sure that the telnet dameon is actually started ( either in
inetd.conf or rc.? files)? Have you tried to telnet into specific ports to
see if services are in fact running?
Try to telnet into your SMTP port and see if you can get a connection.

In trying to network my Linux machine, I find that Linux does not recognize
the "eth0" interface. I know it's there because all the relevant details are
available through linuxconf.
Additionally, the card was configured during installation with the
appropriate drivers.
However, "netstat -i" only reveals the loopback driver and "ifconfig eth0"
says:
eth0:unknown interface.
Please help me find my network card.
Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated.

I hit this under RH 5.1.
Turns out that when a shutdown is scheduled it writes a file called nologin
into /etc. This prevents any login other than root. Well it took me a while to
find this.
Logging in as root worked but no other logins worked. The login messages were
similar but included som info about the system going down for reboot at a time
in the past.
<Cuts own ramblings> I deleted this file & non-root login worked again

Hy together,
i want to boot my Linux from a MD device.
I have installed V-2.2.2, RAID0 activated, option "boot from ..." also,
my lilo.conf looks:
============================== lilo.conf =====
boot=/dev/sda2
linear
read-only
prompt
timeout=100
vga = normal # force sane state
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
.
.
.
####
image = /boot/vmlinuz.222
root = /dev/sda7
label = linux.222
####
image = /boot/vmlinuz.222
root = /dev/md0
label = linux.md
append = md\=0,0,4,0,/dev/sda5,/dev/sdb5
# Linux bootable partition config ends
.
.
.
===============================================
if i boot the "linux.222", the /dev/md0 is mounted under /raid and
works fine. if i boot the second "linux.md" the boot stops.
I ave included my the file /var/log/boot.msg (if i boot the "linux.222"
version)
until the point, where it differs, if i boot the "md" version:

Subject: Where can I found CS8900 Ethernet Driver
Date: Wed, 03 Mar 1999 09:59:23 GMT
Hi everybody,
Do you know the PC104 module MOPS/586 from JUMPtec company
with CS8900 Ethernet chip from CRYSTAL Manufacturer ???
I search the LINUX Ethernet driver for the CS8900 chip.
I don't found anything about it on LINUX HOWTO !!!
Does this chip is so exotic ?
or does exist a driver compatible for another chip ?
If someone knows it, I congratulate him for his answer !!!
Thanks for any help.

Does cu -d /dev/cua[0-4] (use the appropriate device number :^) ) work ?
ie: can you send commands to the modem ??? +++ATZ and get an "OK" response back
??
If this does not work (device busy) you probably have an errant lock file hanging
around.
Hope this helps

That works because it is the loopback (l0) interface, not eth0.

You need to use ifconfig to set up eth0; although it is much easier to
use linuxconf (config -> Networking -> client tasks -> Basic Host
Information). Just set up your ethernet card/ip address etc. and see
what happens.

If you have the stock Dell Bios of v.A09, download the upgraded bios v.A11 off
the Dell website at http://www.dell.com...go to the support/file library
section.
I flashed the new bios and now my internal mobo 16550A serial and my add-on
16C650 hi-speed serial card work perfectly with my ISDN TA....good luck.

Hi,
I would expect that if my /etc/hosts contains the following :
# begin of file
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
# end of file
(1) and I do the following :
$ host 127.0.0.1
<it reports localhost, ...>
(2) and I do the following :
$ host localhost
<it reports 127.0.0.1, ...>
In the example above, (1) works while (2) does _not_
Any clarification?

Setup passwords with smbpasswd, look at the man page for
smbpasswd. I've never setup nobody but have for plain users.
Nobody (the default) equates to guest and some others I believe
to map Unix users to other names set with username map =
/etc/smbusers in smb.conf. In general its for a guest type
account. This sets up the check for valid users = someusername,
see the share definition in /etc/smb.conf. For smbusers I have
root = administrator admin and setup a smbpasswd for root so I
come from NT as root.

Watch for encryption. NT requires a match I'm not sure what 95
uses but if its on then
encrypt yes will probably work.

The 'ifconfig eth0 down' command causes the Cisco 675 lan LED to turn off.
I read that all you have to do to get dsl to work is in
Control Panel > Network Configurator > Interface tab
edit the eth0 entry so that you see
interface ip proto atboot active
eth0 dhcp no active

|
This I can switch to active or to inactive by entering at the command line
ifconfig eth0 up (or down)
This appears to be as it should be.
There is nothing in my /etc/dhcpd.leases, /etc/dhcpd.conf or
/etc/dhcpc/resolve.conf files.
This seems strange to me but I read all I need to do edit the eth0 entry in the
Network Configurator (see above). If something does indeed need to be
in these files, I do not know what information from the winipcfg (see above)
needs to go where.
If I use ezppp to contact another of my ISPs (*not* dsl) I can get Netscape to
work in Linux but I do not know how to get Netscape (or ncftp) to work with
in Linux with the dsl service.
If I bring up Netscape, not using ezppp but with eth0 up, I get a flurry
of blinking lights on the Cisco 675 'modem' but if I try to access any
web site I get the infamous:
Netscape is unable to locate the server: www.whatever.com
The server does not have a DNS entry. Check the server name
in the Location (URL) and try again.
and there is a message about setting my SOCKS - I am clueless
when it comes to SOCKS and I couldn't find any manpage information
on SOCKS and a Web search on SOCKS didn't yield anything
intelligible to me.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated by this old man.

Hi,
can anybody explain me the difference between SOCK_RAW and SOCK_PACKET?
When do I use SOCK_RAW, and when SOCK_PACKET?
Thanks Siegbert
