Subject: Problem with 3CXFE575BT Cardbus PC-CARD fixed !
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 00:39:13 +0200

I have recently got myself a 3com Megahertz 10/100 LAN Cardbus PC Card.
The 3c_575 driver in PCMCIA package 3.0 does not support it. It has a
different manfid then the 3c575 listed in
/etc/pcmcia/config file. config file states 0x5057 but my card say
0x5157 when running cardctl ident 0.
It seams that 3Com has change product id on the new card with X-jack on
it.

Fixed this as followed:
First add new entry in /etc/pcmcia/config for "3CCFE575BT" all data like
the old 3c575 but with manfid 0x5157 inststead
I still didn't get this to work, A check in system log told following
during the driver module load:

kernel: unknown PCI Ethernet adapter type 5157 detected: not configured

A check in the source code did not state the product id 0x5157 just
0x5057, same problem as in pcmcia config file. Chansed and added
statement for product id 0x5157 and product name 3CCFE575BT
Ran make all and copied the new driver to my
/lib/modules/[version]/pcmcia/ directory
Inserted card, got the dubble light beep for successful PCcard config
and I was up and running !!!

I would have liked to see this on another OS

Assuming you have compiled the tulip module and installed it into
the modules directory:

Try adding

        alias eth1 tulip
to /etc/conf.modules

if the linksys is your second card and you are using the tulip module.

You could try mounting the windows filesystem under linux using smbmount and
then sharing that to the mac using netatalk, but I'm not sure if netatalk
allows you to go back the other way. ie mount the mac filesystem under
linux and then share it using samba.

This way, the mac sees a network share on the linux machine, which is really
sharing it from a windows machine. The only drawback of this method is that
the linux machine and your network will have to be reasonably fast.

Hope this helps

I do that all the time, using the package X-WinPro, by Labtam Finland. You
can try it by downloading from http://www.labf.com/

It's been stable and reliable for me. I hardly ever actually sit at my Linux
box and use its monitor. In fact I haven't been able to get X-Windows to
work on the Linux box itself. I use X-WinPro to run applications on a Sun
workstation via an ISDN connection and on my Linux box via a 10Base-T
Ethernet connection. With X-WinPro you get a couple other utilities for
Windows, including telnet, ftp, an NFS server, and a print server (which I
haven't been able to get working). Of course, telnet and ftp already come
with Windows 95, but the ones included with X-WinPro are a little nicer,
with a graphical interface.

A more expensive commercial product is Exceed by Hummingbird Software
http://www.hummingbird.com/
This is used by several larger companies that I know of.

Hi all.

I have a network of Novell servers and other misc things including

by talking to a public ntp server on the internet. I'd like to
keep the Novell server times by using the Linux box as the timesync

into some code to make it work, I just need a little shove in the
right direction to get me started. I use the MARS_NWE package and
I have the sources.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to get a feeling of the load a firewall represents. How
much CPU power would be needed for a firewall running fairly complex
rules (over 200 access control decisions) at :

- T1 (1.5Mbps) running traffic at wirespeed (assume back to back short
packets)
- 10Mbps wirespeed (full duplex)
- 100Mbps wirespeed (full duplex)

A high number of simultaneous connections would be needed (>8K)

I am trying to size up how much horsepower is taken up by this
function.

Thanks,

Hi, I have a linux dialin server using mgetty that other linux servers
in the field dial up to give our clients internet access on their lan
through us. I think my routing on the dialin server is hosed though. I'm
kinda new to linux and routing all together, but it would seem to me that if
you try to assign ppp ip addresses for the dialins that are the same ip
address of your eth card, it would cause a lot of havoc. For instance, on
the dialin server, the ppp inet addr in ifconfig for ppp0 - ppp4 was the
same as the eth card on the box, and you tried to ping that interface, it
wouldn't know to which of the 5 interfaces with the same ip address to go
to. Two of the dialins are working that way but I am having trouble setting
up other servers and getting them to work right. If anyone has any
suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks,

there is a .DEB package you can install for Debian.. Otherwise you can get

sounds like IP forwarding is off

If you have RH,look at /etc/sysconfig/network for:
FORWARD_IPV4=yes
then reboot.

Or in general:
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
is it equal to 1?
If not set it via:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

Sorry Brian but I have never seen a UNIX system that allowed root to log
in with Telnet. Since UNIX is this open system that should be able to
configure like you want it there maybe is a way but I would not bet any
large amount of money that it will work

Subject: Redhat 6.0, kernel 2.2.5, IBM token ring == no system

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Anybody know what I can do to get a working RedHat 6.0 system on a
token ring network?

Using two different target machines:
PPro 150/64 Mb, IBM Auto 16/4 ISA TR adapter,
(same machine), IBM Turbo 16/4 ISA TR adapter,
PII 300/128 Mb, IBM PCI 16/4 TR adapter,
installation fails on specification of networking.

In the first case, the installation detects the adapter, causes a kernel
panic, and proceeds to fill the screen with bad_slab_magic. In the
other two cases, installation reports "I can't find the device anywhere
on your system!" All machines are perfectly happy to network using toy
operating systems.

What's wrong with the 2.2.5 TR module? I haven't been able to find
anyone else reporting this level of difficulty, but I can't get a
machine to actually be usable. Why can't a PCI card be found? Why does
the auto ISA card cause a kernel panic? Why can't the turbo ISA card be
found?

Anyone have any ideas? Apart, of course, from "use ethernet," much as
I'd *like* to .... One of these machines was running RedHat 5.2 with no
problems ... I'm presuming that the problems are somehow in the token
ring code, correct? The module somehow getting *very* confused?

TIA,

Amy!

If you haven't got masquerading to work you aren't going to be able to ping
a damn thing until you do. If you do have masquerading working but just
can't ping then you are firewaling ICMP out and you need to change your
firewall rules.

connection to the ISP to stay up longer then just 15 minutes or so. Can
anyone tell me the location of the time out setting and whether it is in
seconds or milliseconds? I'd like to extend it out to 60 minutes if
possible.

I saw a posting on this a while back but can't seem to find it now.

Thanks in advance!

Todd

Have a look in the man pages for diald.

There is a file tucked away somewhere ( /lib/diald/standard.filter or =
something like that ) which contains the rules for this stuff.

Do a=20
find / -name "standard*" -print 2>/dev/null
to find the file, or look in the files section of the man page for =
diald.
