Can someone clear the air on a subject.
Iv been told (maybe this is incorrect)
but is it possible to have more than one user connected to a dialup
BBS by a single phone line? Sound's crazy and maybe BS to me,
but someone mentioned what is called a PortMaster.
This device is suppose to allow a single phone line branch off
to several modems and allow more than one user to be connected
to the BBS system. Can anyone tel me if this is true?
How much are these things worth?
Are there cheap units around for 4 users?

Subject: world access to NT intranet server through linux web server
Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 17:18:12 +1000
Our company has both a linux box used as a internet server (apache) hosting
out web site and an NT based Intranet server (IIS).
The intranet server provides employees with company information drawn from a
database using a combination of asp, delphi and powerbuilder code and
presented in html format. This information is dynamically presented and
updated by employees using their browsers internally.
We have a need for employees to access this information remotely using the
web from customer sites or from their own offices.
Is their any way that the Linux web server can redirect external requests to
the NT intranet without having to register more IP address with out ISP.
I have acquired a piece of software which passes an address
(xxxxxxx.com:8082) to port 8082 which is used by the program to redirect
the outside request to another box on the other side of the firewall. This
is used on a Linux 2.0.10 server quite effectively and has been for several
years. However, it will not work on our version of Linux 2.0.34.
Is there a solution for us?

Dear all,
I've encountered network probing problem when I use an ISA Intel
EtherExpress Pro 10 lan card during Red Hat Linux 6.0 installation. It
was running properly when in Win 95 platform. I've tried the given 2
Intel drivers namely EtherExpress Pro and EtherExpress Pro/100 but
failed.
Which driver should I use instead then?
Many thx in advance

dear all,
i was given this by pac bell for my DSL line:
IP: 216.102.106.76
gateway: 216.102.106.254
subnetmask: 216.102.106.254
i'm assuming this info is ok to post. :) anyway, here is ifconfig eth0:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr C0:00:48:F0:5A:DF

telnet and ping work via ppp:

now i try to make eth0 the default interface:
route add default gw 216.102.106.254
now nothing works. route simply hangs. ping hangs. telnet hangs. route
-n works (why?):
# route -n

i have to route del default gw 216.102.106.254 to get ping and telnet back.
i also tried deleting the ppp0 default gw before trying this with the same
result. stuff just hangs.
yet -- the rx/tx light on the dsl splitter flashes as if the system is
trying to send packets to pac bell.
can anyone shed light on this? i'm stumped (i'm fairly unknowledgable
about networking period, except for making ppp connections).
i'm dying to try out the 1.5 Mbs bandwidth. i want to upgrade my kernel,
but i want to do it over my brand new DSL connection.
can someone please help?

Redhat and mandrake use glibc2.1 use would get the glibc version of=20
netscape for linux
if you want to upgrade but both distros come with netscape anyway.

Hi folks,
to deqeue the ISPs mailqeue over a dial-in line which can be opened only by
our side, not by our ISP, I want to send a scheduled ETRN to our ISPs
sendmail.
The script etrn.pl by John Beck, which is included in my linux distribution,
reads out the domain name of the server it resides on, which it shouldn't,
because the mailqeue is for a domain different to my servers. Unfortunately,
I am an absolute dummy to all that is programming languages, so I cannot
change the script.
Else I will need some different tool to do the job.
Any idea?

Real links (hard links) are created withOUT the "-s" option.
A real link puts a new name/entry into a directory (link operation) and
gives it the SAME inode number as the original file. It ups a link
count in the inode. Since the two names point have the SAME inode number
to indicate the same file, they can ONLY be used within a file system.
Symbolic links were invented by Berkeley to give you the same facility
as a real link BUT you had to point to a file that could be in another
file system. ie /bin/command pointing to a command in /usr/bin - a separate
filesystem.
Which leads to the question:
ls -li /usr/bin/compress (note: you will see the Inode number)
in MANY unix systems, "uncompress" is a HARD link to compress. ie:
cd /usr/bin; ln compress uncompress
WHY OH WHY in linux, is everything symbolically linked? I can't
believe it is because that many people think ls with the '--color'
option is that wonderful. There HAS to be a reason people are
wasting an inode on that symbolic link - but I can't get any
reasonable answer on this.

It's the administration of the computer from far away. There's an option on

Hi,
I wonder if there is a possibility to force the VIA/Rhine driver to use 100
MBits / Half Duplex. In my current network of two computers directly
connected via crossover cable these cards only work at 100 MBits if I force
one of them to do so. At the moment that means to boot my Windows PC before
booting my Linux PC (Windows drivers have that force option).
Thanx in advance

I have set up my internet connection using an NEC2k PCI ethernet card
and an ASDL modem which works fine. I have also set up Kppp (KDE
frontend for pppd) to dial out to my ISP using an external modem. The
ppp connection works fine if I first reboot with the ASDL modem turned
off. If the eth0 connection is established with the ASDL modem on, all
internet traffic continues to be routed through eth0 and not through the
ppp connection even though the ppp connection is properly established.
Is there an elegant/easy way to turn the eth0 connection on and off or
otherwise have the ppp connection take precedence over the eth0
connection while the ppp connection is on?

Hi.
I'm trying to use mail spool directory over an NFS mounted file system.
Only a month ago all my hosts were HP-UX 10.10, and everything worked.
Now the mail server is a linux (RedHat 6.0, kernel 2.2.5) box, but I've
experienced a problem. When someone try to lock some file over NFS
(for instance using elm) gets a "No locks available" message.
The file /var/log/messages of linux NFS server says:
Aug 22 21:02:20 toe kernel: fh_verify: //root permission failure, acc=4
, error=13
What I'm doing wrong? Is there a patch to correct this? Can Linux
correctly act as a NFS server?
Any ideas?
Please answer (also) via email.
Many thanks in advance.

knfsd 1.4.7) plus knfsd on our server and everything worked fine with a
Solaris 2.6, HP-UX 10.20 and Linux-client. Today someone logs into his

completely hangs (no working console and no pings answered). We could
replicate this behaviour several times and the only message I could
find, was "kernel: svc: unknown version (3)" - though this message came
yesterday, too, and nothing happened. I switched back to 2.2.7 and the
old nfs-stuff and it seems to be ok again. Any clue?

I don't really know what kind of VPN you are using, but you should be able to
get information on the protocol that it uses from the vendor.
The thing is that the VPN's use normally a non-TCP/UDP protocol (ICMP is one
example of those, but there are many more), they use IP directly and with a
specific protocol number. If you can find out what protocols your VPN uses than
you can go to your IPchains admin and configure it so that the servers can
exchage IP packets with those protocol numbers.
The other solution would be to allow everything!!! (not recomended)

Subject: PPP problem: no route to host
Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 09:05:03 GMT
Hi!
I'm using RedHat 6.0 and I've got a problem with my PPP connection:
I get connected to my ISP, name resolution works but hosts can't be
reached.
I know name resolution works because ping shows the IP address of the
host specified but can't get an answer. The command traceroute isn't
able
to reach remote hosts and Netscape says "TCP Error: no route to host"
Anyway in one of many tries maybe one host is reached.
If I reboot the machine and use Win98 to connect everything works fine
so it seems to be a problem with my network configuration under linux.
Here is the log of the connection:

Thanks, will try. Is there ann option for disabling auto negotiation and
forcing 100 MBits too? I know that's not recommended, but my cards don't
automatically decide that they are 100 MBit-able. I think that's because of
the direct crossover connection. I don't want to by an extra switch just to
connect two computers...

Hello,
Can you locate eepro100.o?
Is it in /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net/eepro100.o?
If so...
(1) You can create rc.modules file with the following 2 lines in it:
#!/bin/sh
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net/eepro100.o
(2) Place this rc.modules to /etc/rc.d/ (as /etc/rc.d/rc.modules) and chmod
it to 755.
(3) Reboot your machine
