If your really stuck you could try an 'fuser -9 -k /dev/tty##'. This
will issue a kill -9 to all processes which are using this device.
Useful but dangerous.

Well, that's not it....

Tried a completely different machine (disk swap), and get exactly the same
error.

Hmm, just went to the shop and got a copy of SuSE 6.2; let's try that! :)

Try this: cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding

if it displays 0, then use this to enable forwarding:

     echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding

Also put it in your rc.local script, so it will be set on a reboot.

You need to use 'ipchains -nL forward' or 'ipchains -nvL forward' to
check the hit counts on each rule. THis will tell you what rule is
accepting your packets.

How exactly did you mount your modem ? I am having a hell of a time trying
to figure out this Linux modem networking stuff. No one seems to know a
simple answer or a common method of solving problems with modems. Heck
there is no mention of the steps to take to even set up a modem from scratch
unless I just can't find it :)

What you need is Samba. There are a lot of resources on the net for it. Do a
search on a Linux site for samba and you should be in with a good chance of
finding something.

Check the AIX FAQ (comp.unix.aix); a setting may be required on the AIX box in
order to mount from Linux; this has to do with the ports that Linux and AIX
use for NFS mapping.

Clifford, I think you've hit upon my problem. I *don't*
need a static hostname. However, when setting up RH 6.0,
the setup scripts ask for a hostname and I supplied one. I
would prefer that the outside world (on ppp0) would use the
dynamic IP address, and not try to resolve my local
hostname.

Also, I would like my home intranet (on eth0) to continue to
use my chosen hostnames.

thanks.

I've tried this. The script without the atm part of course. I've tried the

I've read the man pages and can probably recite verbatum if needed. Now I'm

luck what-so-ever with the ppp dial up. So I've been at the "guessing" stage

I had already managed to get that far, I only had the 802.2 and 802.3
interfaces configured since that was all my print server needed. The
printer server uses IPX but is not a novell device. Id di not know
about ipxd, I only had the Linux-HOWTO for IPX to go by. Unfortunalty I
had to go back to NT o nthe box, since my BJC5000 printer does not work
on any known printer server, or linux. I would rather not have the
other pritner on the IPX based printer server, but the TCP/IP one I
have from Axis does not work with the HP882C printers. I seem to have
great luck with pritners and servers. My alternate plan, was to build
an ew server and use the LinuxRouter on the router box. Thanks for the

no one on here was good enough to help, but it turns out that the
3c59x driver (the most recent one, not the one that comes with RH6.0),
works for the OfficeConnect as well as a slew of other 3com cards.
you can get this driver at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html just download
and follow the instructions to compile and install it, replacing the
older 3c59x.o file. modprobe to test it, and if there's no output
from modprobe, you're good and can put the info in linuxconf for the
adapter. good luck!
