Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 11:49:09 +0900
Dear gentlemen:
After I installed RedHat 5.2 on pentium PC which has two NIC as a
gateway to support IP masquerade, the following console messages
come out repeatedly: (eth1 (3com 900-PCI) for internal user's gateway)
eth1: Transmit error, Tx status register 82.
eth1: Transmit error, Tx status register 82.
eth1: Transmit error, Tx status register 82.
.
.
But my linux box looks working well even if these errors occur.
All of UTP cables was checked by cable tester.
My 'uname -a' is:
Linux a.my.com 2.0.36 #3 Wed Mar 10 08:23:13 EST 1999 i686 unknown
What makes these console error messages?
Please, advice me to fix it up!
Best Regards,
Brian

Does anyone know how to use TCPDUMP to actually sniff the data or clear
text out of packets?
The O-Reilly book "Essential System Administration" describes using
tcpdump with the -D switch
to do this, but I cannot find any version of tcpdump that this switch
actually works with.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. What config file do I edit for fvwm2 menu and where can
I find a 100dpi file? It's not on any one the 3 CD's from RH.

This looks normal. My guess is that the card is working fine, and
your problem is just that the interface hasn't been configured. Have

tcgetattr almost always means that there is another process besides
pppd that is contending for the modem IRQ. Some examples are (1) an
ethernet card that used the same IRQ as the modem, (2) a misconfigured
ppp script that launched pppd twice, and (3) a mingetty that somehow
had been configured for call-in. If yours is different, I would be
interested in adding to this list. :)

With such a setup, you probably don't have any IRQ left over.
ISA cards can't share IRQs at all (unless you're using specific
hardware), and many PCI cards don't have Linux drivers that
would allow IRQ sharing, neither.

[...]
3 and 4 are occupied by your serial ports, 5,9,10,11 by the above
listed cards, 12 is probably your PS/2 mouse and 15 your IDE controller .
If you don't need the secondary IDE controller, disable it in your
system's BIOS and put the Teles card onto IRQ 15. With your present
setup, there's hardly any other way to get that working.

no- this is linux to linux. Its best to leave sloppy, alien formats
out of this.
The normal *nix method is NFS mounts.
place an entry in /etc/exports for each machine
such as:
/ 10.1.1.1(rw,no_root_squash,link-relative)
HUP the nfs server ( type '/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs restart' ) . Create a
local mountpoint then mount the other system.
mount other_ip:/ /mountpoint
if this works, setup your /etc/fstab to recognize the other system so
the command 'mount /mountpoint' is all you need. This mount can even be
automatic on startup.

5k what? Baud or CPS? 5kCPS is what I would expect over an uncompressed
56kbaud line. I regularly get 5-6kCPS over my 31,200 baud link (with
compression) and I'm only running a 486/66. 5kbaud, on the other hand, is
rather slow... :)
Things to check:
Are you running your modem serial port at 115,200 baud? You need to issue a
setserial command to set the port speed to "spd_vhi" - see the setserial
man page for details.
You should also look into irqtune to set the interrupt priority for your
modem serial port higher than anything else.
And you should make sure that your modem setup strings are specifying
hardware handshaking and enabling compression.

Hi!
I'm going to install a small network using win98 / win95-clients
and a linux server (DLD-5.4).
My problem is that I need to print on each client from each client.
Under unixware there is a command called tcpprint which is exact
the thing I need. Is there an equal command under linux?
Or is there perhaps an other solution?
thanks in advance armin

For remote X I used a script and tied it to .login or called it from the
local profile, i.e., .bash-profile. The script formulates a DISPLAY
value via tty and who commands and sets it automatically. Here it is.

New to networking and linux.
I have redhat 5.2 with samba 1.9.18p10 networked to one win 98 computer. I
have a problem with the win 98 computer recognizing the name of the linux
computer( name = rhserv ). I can ping the linux system by name, but then
when I run net view using the linux systems name I get error 53. Then if I
run net view with the linux ip address it shows the shares, and then I can
run net view with the linux systems name without error. However if the
network is idle for a while ( about 15 minutes ) windows forgets the linux
name and I'm back to using the ip address before windows recognizes the
linux name...
In the windows\hosts file I have the following lines;
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.1 winblo
192.168.1.2 rhserv
In the windows\lmhosts file I have the following lines;
#linux redhat 5.2 Samba Server
192.168.1.2 rhserv #PRE #DOM:coral
192.168.1.1 winblo #PRE #DOM:coral
The following was run from the DOS prompt, one command right after the other
in less than a minutes time. Can someone tell me why the win 98 system
cannot recognize the linux name until after I have run net view using the
linux ip address?

what should I need to do after I insert a new machine to the file
/etc/hosts.
/etc/hosts is changed from :
# IP Address Hostname Alias
192.168.0.1 matrix.computer matrix
127.0.0.1 localhost
localhost.localdomain
to:
127.0.0.1 localhost
localhost.localdomain
192.168.0.1 matrix.computer matrix
192.168.0.2 firebat.computer firebat
192.168.0.3 ghost.computer ghost
Should I need to reboot the computer, run a command to update the change ???

Subject: Installation of Xwindows Applications and other misc problems
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 19:41:49 -0600
I've gone through the installation of several applications in RH5.2
Xwindows and they don't always get added to the menu. I 've tried a
couple of File managers and the games that are included on the CD using
RPM. emacs and gvim have been added to the menu.
In addition I downloaded Netscape Communicator 4.51 to replace the
version 4.07 that came with the system. I went through the procedures
outlined on Netscapes web site and when I run Netscape form the menu,
the old version runs. The only way I can get the new version to run is
by typing in a command line.
In an unrelated topic, I made an executable script to disconnect from my
internet server and I always get a 'command not found' message, even
when I run it from the directory where it resides. I have set the
execute attributes for the file.
The font in netscape is barely readable and I would like to make it
bigger. I have changed the font on the Netscape preferences and it
doesn't make any difference. Is there a way to make the Xwindows
default font size larger?

hi-
I've been using ncp mounts on 2.2.x kernels without a hitch until
2.2.3. If I revert back to 2.2.2-ac7 ncp works again.
The ipx_configure command reports an invalid socket operation.
Anyone else seen this ?
2.2.3 on i386 (SMP dual P5)
