I have a similar problem with one of my WinNT machines which also used
pc-nfs to "mount" a drive off an UltraSparc. It gets that error when
I try to share a drive on my Linux box (running Samba). My other NT box
(w/out pc-nfs) has no problem sharing the Linux drive. I'm thinking
about
getting rid of pc-nfs and running Samba on the Solaris box.

Subject: Help with interpretation of rfc951
Date: Tue, 6 Apr 1999 09:39:33 -0400
I am having a little disagreement with the way a company that I am dealing
with has interpreted rfc951 in regards to the handling of the file name in
Bootp.
It seems that the way they interpreted rfc951, if the client places a text
string in the "file" field in the Bootp request they do not replace that
string with the string defined on the QIP server. So, the reply comes back
with the "tip" string.
I have not worked with Bootp servers before. Is this a fair interpretation
of rfc951? In section 2 paragraph 4 it states that the client may provide a
"tip" in it's request and quote:
"When the server sends
the bootreply, it replaces this field with the fully qualified
path name of the appropriate boot file. In determining this name,
the server may consult his own database correlating the client's
address and filename request, with a particular boot file
customized for that client."
However, in section 7.1 the rfc states:
"The client has several options for filling the 'file' name field.
If left null, the meaning is 'I want to boot the default file for
my machine'. A null file name can also mean 'I am only interested
in finding out client/server/gateway IP addresses, I dont care
about file names'.
The field can also be a 'generic' name such as 'unix' or
'gateway'; this means 'boot the named program configured for my
machine'. Finally the field can be a fully directory qualified
path name."
Since I have not worked with any other Bootp servers, I need some help to
determine if this is a valid interpretation of the rfc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi.. I was trying out the method you described but I encountered the
mount error: No such device message when I issued the smbmount
command.
Below is my configuration and and what I did:
1. I made one of my sub-directories under Win95 in D drive and a
shared folder with no password
2. I believe Win95 box name is Greg as I observed this under the
Network icon's in the Control Panel's Identification tab.
3. My win95 box is having 192.9.200.150 as its IP address
4. I made the mount point as /mnt/amy in Linux
5. I issued the smbmount //Greg/AMY /mnt/amy -I 192.9.200.250 -n and
encountered "mount error: No such device" message.
Please advice.. and thanks!

I've just finished replying to another post that is very similar to
yours but which included kdebug 3 messages. I think the source of these
bogus protocols is pppd itself! Somehow some of the ascii messages that
are generated by pppd and sent to the log are being sent to the ISP.
The ISP PPP peer doesn't understand them and sends them back with a
ProtRej message. The kdebug 3 messages in the other post verified that
this was happening in that case.
The 0x5072 and 0x7263 in your post correspond to ascii "Pr" and "rc",
respectively. These are the first letters in Prot and rcvd which are
common at the beginning of many pppd log messages. Correct interpretation
of kdebug 3 messages can confirm or deny this.
The catch is that I don't know why this is happening.

Good morning
In the process of trying to get my PPP working on my system, I
recompiled the kernel to have built in PPP support. I kept having an
error messages while uncompressing and booting to the new kernel. It
would say something to the effect that there was nothing more to load
and die right there and not load any further. I would therefore have to
boot the old kernel.
So what I did was before configuring and compiling a new kernel was I
did a " make mrproper " which is said to do a through cleaning job.
(this is the first time that I tried this command.) I now have a kernel
that will boot with PPP support but I now have a bunch ( A LOT ) of
unresolved modules (symbols) indicated during boot up.
How do I solve the unresolved the unresolved modules or symbols?
I am doing this on a 66mhz ,486 ,8mb ram, 1gb hd. I intend to use this
machine as an E-mail machine for the wife. (running pine)

Becasue you didn't build pppd with IPX support.
For lots and lots of post telling you the same try a dejanews search
on "0x802b protocol" in comp.os.linux.*
Please try to get into the habit of searching *before* you post.

I suspect the IPX not supported message is independant of any IP
problems you are having.
Did you perhaps define a bogus default gateway?

It's Novell IPX control protocol. If you don't know that you need it
then you probably don't need it.
: Then i get both the local and the remote up address but i can't ping
: anything outside the local net.
Could be that you have a default gateway route set up for the local
network. Pppd won't replace such a route with a default route to the
ppp0 interface. Remove it and use a network-specific route for the
local network.
: What could be wrong. Using pppd 2.3.5 on kernel 2.2.5
See what ifconfig and route show - do their outputs look OK? Did you
upgrade the things in the 2.2.5 linux/Documentation/Changes file?
: I works on the same computer/modem to dail another ISP.
Same Linux OS? Check the pppd/chat scripts for that ISP.

What you want is Trinux, a two floppy distribution of linux specifically
made to boot from floppy and to perform security/network diagnosis tasks.
check out http://www.trinux.org
By using trinux, you don't have to install a whole Linux O/S. Just put
the floppy in you bosses desktop, reboot, and now you're running linux!!
Caveat: must preconfigure the floppy to use his Ethernet card, probably.
I've never used Trinux. I have used other mini-distributions
(www.linuxrouter.org) with much success, however.
Finally, the tools you want are nmap (port scanner), tcpdump (packet
sniffer), ping (hehe), and traceroute (i'm sure you knew this). That's
probably a good start.
Hope this helps,
Luca

Could you please explain why you think that changing the routing table

Are not patents a matter of public record?
Has the patent expired yet?
If it has expired then anyone can implement it. At least that's how

The contents of your script producing these problems would be useful.

Does the file have execution permissions?

Is this incoming or outgoing that's not working?

I think you probably have your firewall rules too tight. Have you
tried using a really loose (wide open) firewall script and seeing if
it works that way?
I'm also somewhat confused by two sets of network addresses. Are you
running two ethernet cards and a dial-up connection?

You must not configure your name server to not to forward non-local requests.
You must run your name server on a machine that can see the outside
world.
If you have no control over the placement of the LAN name server then
you'll need to install a caching-only nameserver on the PPP router
that has "stub" zone entries for your local zones. (Alternatively if
you have a lot of local zones you mat consider getting the selective
forwarding patches for BIND).
