Subject: Win-2-Linux-2-Net problem (much detail furnished)
Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 20:29:49 GMT
The Network:
Win98 >--eth0 --> LinuxBox -> modem -> ISP
192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 nameservers: 204.52.135.1
GW 192.168.0.1 RH6.0 2.2.9 from ISP 204.52.135.2
OBJECT: connect to ISP from Win98 thru LinuxBox
Whats installed:
All necessary kernel options are installed (I believe)
Samba 2.0.4b as mentioned 100% functional both directions.
No probs with samba at all.
ipv4 is activated on bootup from kernel
Ipmasqadm is functional
IPChains is functional
Squid is functional ( though because of its memory hogging,
I do not wish to use it)
What works at present: Samba - all functions and services
ppp0 from linuxBox I can use lynx and netscape to internet
What I have done so far:
Read and even printed out, Net-3, Firewall, IPChains, PPP HOWTO's
Tried almost all examples given (that seemed to apply to my minimal
net)
The test that seemed to me most apt to work(but didn't) was:
# ppp-up ok
# ipchains -P DENY
# ipchains -A forward -s ppp0 -j MASQ
# ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L xxx.xxx.xxx.x 80 -R yyy.yyy.yyy.y 80
# ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L xxx.xxx.xxx.x 1464 -R yyy.yyy.yyy.y
1464
# ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L xxx.xxx.xxx.x 1604 -R yyy.yyy.yyy.y
1604
(tried this with the last two lines and without them, same results.
I am assuming they have something to do with load equalizing)
I have substituted all combinations of IP's for the xxx's and yyy's
only ones on my net of course<G>, AND the nameserver IP's as well,
they are the ones also used to access the ISP's webpage.

this is the format i use:
smbmount //cs197312-b/music1 lovelace -c 'mount /mnt/music1'
-c is a command. i'm not sure why you would use your server name as an
argument.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I run RH5.2 with k2.2.6 upgrade. Everything was fine until a couple of
days when I upgraded wu-ftpd, mount and a couple of other small packages
from ftp site under redhat/5.2/updates/2.2.2. and updates in general for
RH 5.2 ( incl samba 2.0.3).
Now I notice that the nameserver defs are removed from the
/etc/resolv.conf file every time kppp starts and stops. I have to add
them in between for DNS to work. The DNS helper process does NOT clobber
the file- I verified. Removing all write permissions to the file are of
no avail. This hadn't happened till now. Any pointers ? Anyone seen this
before ?
TIA,

I work on this problem since days but I can' solve it.
I had installed my diald on my computer but it don't react if I make a
internet request.
I think the reason is that I have no default route on my ppp0
interface. If I close a normally established connection with a chat
script then it closed automatically my default route. Every try to
make this default route again failed.
If i type
/sbin/route add default gw 141.48.3.134 dev ppp0
then apears the error
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
I have already read all howtos to this problem. Only in the SuSE
Database I found the route order above.
Maybe anyone here can help me.
Thanks in advance

The email where he asked me what changes would be needed to do Telnet
access to a BBS. I actually had a telnettable Maximus based on OS/2 a
couple of years ago. (I haven't turned that computer on in more than a
year.)
Unfortunately, managing a telnet connection isn't quite the same thing as
managing a serial port, so it never worked quite right. You could either
interact with the BBS or do downloads, but not both.
I never answered Scott's email because I got busy and don't really have
time to do that sort of development work.

Maximus is a commercial product right now, so how much would you be
willing to pay for a copy of Maximus for this effort? If I offer him a
sale, it might convince him to send me the source. (Then, the trick would
be to find time to do something with it.)

Hello,
I don't think there is an utility to visually see the progress of the
messages sending via smtp.
To check the smtp queue you can use mailq (or mailq -v) command. To see if
your smtp server is running, just telnet to the port 25 (default smtp port):
telnet 0 25
Good luck!

Well, that would be just like Microsoft... It works just fine from my

Can anybody tell me how they have case sensitivity working for Samba? I

Try searching for a program called ringconnectd. It sounds like it might

You may have to reinstall the vmware modules to use them with the new
kernel. Also if you want to use samba, then make sure samba support is
in the kernel when you compile it.

One card is usually eth0. (I say "usually" but I've never seen it be
anything else.) However, it won't show up in /dev because you don't
access it by using the same special file mechanism as, say, a serial port.
(BTW, those files in /dev are created by a program called mknod and don't
necessarily reflect the capabilities of your system.)
If you want to determine what networking devices you have installed, and
you have installed support for the proc filesystem, try doing a
"cat /proc/net/dev"

I know that the subject looks like I am a moron, I was just hoping to
get some attention.
I am running RedHat 5 and had to move it to a new IP. I went through
everything I can think of and got everything switched over (including
Internic because I am serving a few domains) so that it all works
correctly except for one thing: X. Now when I start up X I get the
following error:
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
xrdb: Connection refused

and so on...
Since really the only thing that has changed is the IP, I have
searched through everything I know of related to X and looked for an
entry with the old IP in it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I may be wrong, but I think you needd to log into the Win98 box with a valid
username/password combo on the linux box.
