something changed, but not what you think. look at /proc/net/dev directly
for a hint (it's where ifconfig is getting the stats) and then read

obviously the cabling is in order ( else no ping at all, no smb )
HOW do you ping the linuxbox , by name or by adress ?
if by adress, try tcpdump ( i think theres an howto somewhere) to see
whats amiss
if by name and no response, configure hosts file in win98 ( maybe the
nameresolution )
or look at hosts.deny ? hosts.allow ? i'm not sure if ping can be denied
this way
try to be more specific w what u do, we can help better

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I use Linux Redhat 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36.
For one of my application, I need to create two semaphores, one for
clients applications, and another for the server process. The creation
works fine. If I do an ipcs command, I see the two semaphores.
I can also see the values of each semaphores. My problem arise when I
want to signal one of the semaphores, so that the process can treat
acordingly (either that the server receive's data from the client, or
vice versa throught shared memory).
When I want to signal, I call the proper function and the proper
semaphore ID. The other end is in waiting mode. The operation "works"
in the respect that the signaling process exits with and error message :
invalid argument
The receiving process receives the proper info but the signaling exits.
Here is the code For the signaling and waiting function :
int waitsem(int semid) /* wait on a semaphore */
{
struct sembuf p_buf;
p_buf.sem_num = 0;
p_buf.sem_op = -1;
p_buf.sem_flg = SEM_UNDO;
if (semop(semid, &p_buf, 1) == -1) {
perror("waitsem() failed");
exit(1);
} else
return (0);
}
int postsem(int semid) /* post to a semaphore */
{
struct sembuf v_buf;
v_buf.sem_num = 0;
v_buf.sem_op = 1;
v_buf.sem_flg = SEM_UNDO;
if (semop(semid, &v_buf, 1) == -1) {
perror("postsem()
failed"); Line that
gives error on signal
exit(1);
} else
return (0);
}
Only one semaphore is created in the creation. In the creation routine,
it verifies that the semaphore exist, else it creates it.

My goal during my Christmas holidays was to set up a local
network between 3 computers, such that they could all link
to each other no matter what combination of Linux/W95/W98
was used to boot each machine. To this end, with much hair-
pulling, I have been successful.
The *ultimate* goal to is 'prepare the soil' for eventually
being able to connect ONE machine to a future cable modem
service and let the other machines SHARE the feed. To this
end, I have NOT been successful -- even though I would have
guessed that this was the 'easy' part! :(
I have studied many FAQ's, web pages, and newsgroup postings,
and though each has helped I must be missing something.
Here is some relevant info -- please tell me where I have
messed up or where else I should be careful:
The contents of /etc/sysconfig/network:

Subject: Debian 1.3, pppd, wont connect when called by WinNT
Date: 03 Jan 1999 10:27:06 PST
I have Debian 1.3 running.
The box has eth0 on a fat SDSL pipe.
I need to connect to the linux box from an NT box over the serial line,
via PPP.
The modem works fine. It is used in UUCP service regularly. It does
connect, as evidenced by the log entries. So, the serlial communications
part should not be suspect.
I did the vanilla install using dselect.
I read the fine print in /usr/doc/ppp. There was a very short topic on
getting Win95 working. I did those things. At this writing, I'm stuck
with no connection. I enabled debug in /etc/ppp/options and get the
following entries in the /var/log/syslog.
I am speculating that there may be a conflict between pppd and Shadow
Passwords. There is mention of use of /etc/passwd for authentication. I
have Shadow Passwords installed.
Any hints at what I am screwing up? Post to group only, please. TIA!

My method for dealing with it -- procmail, and a separate but valid
email address. This post comes from [EMAIL PROTECTED] That
mail goes directly to my true mailbox, which sets aside all such mail
into a separate folder for later processing. When I accumulate enough
history to write some procmail rules, I'll have that mail autoprocessed
as well so regular correspondants will still reach me immediately, spam
gets bitbucketed, and everything else gets autoresponded with a note
saying I might not read it for a month or two. The auto-response will
of course come from [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You might like to check out
http://www.letterbox.com/home/hoeteck/kgr/n0vix/ then, which I'm afraid
is hosted on a very slow server though. The page outlines the
fundamental ideas behind setting up a Linux Server at home on a PPP, as
well as some configuration information for mail (sendmail, fetchmail) as
well as web (Apache).
For IMAP, it's pretty straight-forward; nothing unusual. Just install
the IMAP RPM from Redhat that'd run a IMAP server.
cheers,
hoeteck
P.S.: would appreciate acknowledgements if you're going to add anything
from the n0vix site to your documentation.

Hi,
I am wondering about my ISP and Linux. My ISP, Cwix.com, formerly
MCI2000.com, contains no tech support or anything related to Linux, as
do probably most ISPs. When I try to connect through EzPPP in Linux, I
can't get on. It never asks for a password or login name. I have tried
using the terminal window and it still will not ask for that info. I was
wondering if anyone knows anything I should do, or should I just get a
new ISP??
Thanks.

Not sure if this addresses your problem, but I had a similar situation.
I have my Linux PC with the Internet connection masqueraded to a Win95
PC on my home LAN. I could call out with IPhone but people couldn't call
in. I believe the solution is called "port redirection". Adding the
following line to /etc/inetd.conf (Redhat 5.2) fixed it for me:
# allows incoming Internet Phone calls
# 192.168.x.x is the address of the PC (win95) being masqueraded to
22555 dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/bin/udpred
192.168.x.x 22555
For this method, you'll need a copy of the udpred program. I found it as
source and compiled it. Look at http://dijon.nais.com/~nevo/masq/ (click
on Masq Links)
You can also use ifautofw, but that requires kernel modifications. The
above mod didn't require me to recompile the kernel and reboot, all I
had to do was a "inet restart".

Read in 'man pppd' about ip-up. Your address is passed there as
an argument. You may do with it whatever you want/need.

I am "trying" to do it. Have not done it yet. Hope both of us can work
it out together. 8)
I have looked at this page (http://www.nic.com/~cannon/Linux/) and
tried the config on a new RH 5.2 system I have just installed.
Unfortunately it didn't work. It says my kernel does not support
demand dialing. It seems that kernel support for demand dialing has
been removed, and "diald" is the recommended way of doing it. See the
following excerpt from kerne Mini-HOWTO:
========
What about dial-on-demand networking?
kerneld originally had some support for establishing dial-up
network
connections on demand; trying to send packets to a network without
being connected would cause kerneld to run the
_/sbin/request_route_
script to setup a PPP or SLIP connection.
This turned out to be a bad idea. Alan Cox of Linux networking fame
wrote on the linux-kernel mailing list, that
The request-route stuff is obsolete, broken and not required [...]
Its also removed from 2.1.x trees.
Instead of using the request-route script and kerneld, I whole
heartedly advise that you install Eric Schenk's diald package,
available from http://www.dna.lth.se/~erics/diald.html
=========
I will continue my experiment on "diald". You can check out the Mini
HOWTO on diald too.
Just in case you are interested, there is a dial-up GUI frontend that
can be used by clients in the network to initiate a dial-up on the
gateway. Can't remember the exact name. Just look it up in
www.freshmeat.net.
Good luck!

You didn't say which proxy server you tried to set up, but you
should try wwwoffle. It's configurable via your browser.
