on my system switching to runlevel5 will not start xdm (it will on RH systems) I
just fired up my trusty run level editor and added xdm to the level 5
startup....and reflections X will scan for an xdm host (it calls it an xdmcp host)
:)
Cheers!!!:)

Is there a HOW-TO or equivalent information on setting up POP3 or IMAP on
a Linux box? I've looked and found nothing on point so far.
Also, this box is going to be operating as a firewall. What/where is the
best HowTo or other tip sheet for firewall use?
Thanks,
Gerald

Hi,
I fixed my masqueraded inaccessible website problem by setting the MTU to
1500 on the gateway. It seemed to fix access to sites like www.hotmail.com and
Deja News and such.
Hope this helps,

I have both a modem connected to my machine and I am connected to a
corporate Lan. The lan PDC is an NT machine and my box is a Linux. I would
like to be able to dial to my ISP with my Linux box, which I can do. I just
can't find any DNS entries for anything on the internet. I am assuming my
setup forces me to look at my Intranet DNS for host name resolution, and not
my ISP. How do I change this so I can surf the net, download email, and
view newsgroups from my Linux box?
THanks.

I, and 1000s of others got it to work, so it's not impossible.

I am using this [obnoxious] card in a linux 2.0.36 system. I am using
the mpx5030 driver obtained from accton. the cards have been working
fine for the last week until today we started encountering some
problems. all the machines using them are intel pII-350's w/ 64 megs of
ram. the driver is compiled as a module. out of no where all network
access is lost and the console starts to display this message
approximately every 10 seconds:
eth0: Tx descriptor 0 is 000805ea.
eth0: Tx descriptor 1 is 000805ea.
eth0: Tx descriptor 2 is 000805ea.
eth0: Tx descriptor 3 is 000805ea.
ifconfig reports the following:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:E8:69:F0:53
inet addr:192.168.0.10 Bcast:192.168.0.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:42696 errors:8 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:37258 errors:108 dropped:0 overruns:3 carrier:35
Collisions:3768
Interrupt:5 Base address:0xe400
the TX packet error count increases each time the errors are reported (I
think). after a reboot the system works fine again. mpx5030.c lists
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/mpx5030.html
as the driver homepage but this page doesnt seem to exist anymore. from
flipping through the driver, i believe this is the result of a transmit
timeout but since im not too familiar with hacking network drivers i was
wondering if anyone had encountered this problem and been able to fix it
easily...
if anyone knows what happened to this driver and its support, id love to
know...at least so i can start looking for another card if i have to...
Thanx,
-James

I don't think so. ISDN kernel support is only for internal ISDN TA's. This
fellow has a 3Com Impact IQ which is an external unit. For all practical
purposes, it looks like an external modem connected to a serial port.

The firewall is not letting DNS queries through. Use the ipfwadm command
to fix this.

I hope you don't have IP forwarding turned on when you dial you ISP or
your LAN security administrator is going to have kittens.
How is your /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/host.conf, and /etc/nsswitch.conf setup?
How is your routing setup when connected to your ISP? Are the packets
going out the right interface?

b) 0x300 - irq=11
Distribution - RedHat 5.1
conf.modules (contents)

alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x320 irq=11
card one - hostname 'lts.project.com' - ip = 195.50.25.1
card two - hostname [left blank] - ip = 175.50.25.1
Having a problem getting two NIC's to initialize. I finally got Linux
to see the cards but it reports that it is delaying initializing them.

Want to connect two nets together. Do I need to configure Linux as a
gateway or a router?

Subject: please help me with this problem
Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 22:58:15 GMT
i've posted numerous times to this (and other) linux groups and no one
seems to be able to help me.
my problem is that my ifup ppp0 script doesn't always work. it'll
dial and it never fully connects...sometimes. sometimes it does.
i also use usernet and the same thing occurs.
i've had a modem locked by PID 1140 message (in /var/log/messages)
and i've noticed that in the expect for the password (in the messages
file) it's not sending what i think it should be sending...though i
know it's correct in the configuration.
what would cause the ifup script to only work sometimes? usually if
it doesn't work i can reboot and it will connect....again not always.
if anyone has a suggestion i'd greatly appreciate it. i've looked in
a number of books and man pages but i can't find anything.
pllllllllllllllease help me!
thank you.

Hello All
Trying to setup DNS on Linux 2.0.0
Have tried this.....
dns:~# ndc start
/usr/sbin/ndc: /var/run/named.pid does not exist
dns:~# nslookup
*** Can't find server name for address 127.0.0.1: No response from
server
*** Default servers are not available
dns:~#
Have created the files I thought were needed. Just trying to setup DNS
for little network at home. No outside connection at the moment.
Anybody willing to fill me in on what needs to be done.
Thanks
