First you must have the DNS numbers of your ISP. Then check in /etc for
a resolve.conf file and put these numbers in it. If you do not have a
resolve.conf file then simply create one. here is an example resolve.conf
file:
nameserver 207.76.190.30
nameserver 207.76.190.44
These numbers must be correct for your ISP or they will not work!
Then you need to go to your ppp-on script and change the Phone number to
your ISP's number and also change your login name and password to you's. These
must be corrected in your ppp-on script as well as the /dev/ttyS? section
down at the bottom and the modem speed such as 115200 or what ever speed your
modem is.
Then you need to check the ppp-on-dialer script for the correct login
prompts required by your ISP. You can do this by dialing your ISP with minicom
and watching for the login & password prompts. example: mynet login, or
MyNet login as well as the password prompt. example: password,
Password, My Password.
These need to be corrected in your ppp-on-dialer script.
Then try to connect again.
If you can't find the ppp-on scripts you can look in
/usr/doc/ppp-2.?.?/scripts
Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Bummer. FWIW, I couldn't get the vmware networking working, either, but
I assumed it was some kind of misconfiguration on my part; I didn't try
very hard.
I needed to install to use my raw partition (I have to preserve
dual-boot or my wife will kill me: she's not interested in running
Windows-in-a-window :) and I never got the Windows SVGA driver working
and even so, it overwrote my Viper 550 driver in Windows even though it
was in another hardware profile...
All in all, I decided vmware (and Windows 98) isn't _quite_ ready for
prime time WRT raw partitions... so I never got around to dealing with
the network problem.
So, in short, I can't say whether or not this is a generic 2.2.10
problem or not.

I guess your NEW to linux. Applying a patch to original code has
long been a standard procedure for bug fixes.
Both of which have been on the diald homepage (that of it's original
creator) for a long time. Only about a week ago was the new keeper of
diald and the new webpage put on the old diald homepage.
When people grab code from anywhere and not the offical web site
then most likely they get something less than the newest release.

At the routing table add the default route to the gateway like this:
route add default gw x.x.x.x
x.x.x.x is the IP address of your router
Take a look at the manpages of the route command.
> Where to put DNS servers IP-nr?
At /etc/resolv.conf, like this:
nameserver x.x.x.x <-- Primary DNS
nameserver x.x.x.x <--Secondary DNS
> Where to put DNS hostname?

I think netcfg is for SUSE. If you use RedHat try netconf.

Well.... Leave the 127.0.0.1 away, it's already used, so you can't assign
this address to another interface.... (BTW, 127.0.0.1 is ALWAYS assigned
to localhost).

I have a cable modem through Mediaone. I had linux working fine through
them, but recently they changed my ip address, and they had some problems
besides that. Now I lose the connection to the net and the only way that
seems to get it back is to reboot the machine, then it works. Any ideas
on what could be wrong. I was thinking about writing perl script that
ran in the cron that checked to see if the connection is alive, if not it
would reboot.

Yo!
I am trying to do the same thing, but then with callback account on an NT
server. I haven't had success yet, but that is merely because of the
callback thing. What you need to do is create an interface using isdnctrl.
This interface (normally called ippp0, or ippp1, etc.) can be configured
(also using isdnctrl). It can be configured to dial out on a request
(actually it is the default route for the Linux machine) and to hangup after
some time (say 5 minutes or so). It can also be configured to have a fixed
IP address or to get one from the dialin server (dynamic IP). But that is
all something I read about, but haven't tried yet (no wonder, I still need
to get called back by the NT machine!). Don't forget to get the latest
version of isdn4linux (at ftp.franken.de or something like that).
Anyway, that is all I can tell about this. It's all by heart, so don't shoot
me if something isn't right. Try a 'man isdnctrl', it tells a lot (or just
type isdnctrl without arguments).
Good luck,
Dimitri

Subject: problem using smbmount to mount a NT drive
Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 15:33:26 GMT
I am trying to mount a NT drive on my linux system.
The NT drive is FAT32. I have upgraded as much as I can
to avoid the nasty timestamp problem which I encountered
on successful mounting. (where the times are
all messed up upon writing)
Now I am running kernel 2.2.9
I installed the rpm samba 2.0.4b from www.samba.org
I also compiled samba 2.0.4b so that I could get smbmount, smbumount
(I worked through a NR_OPEN compile problem by setting the value
to 1024 -- that's probably not the thing to do)
I can no longer smbmount a drive -- my command is (this has worked
with older versions, but I had the timestamp problem)
/usr/local/samba/bin/smbmount \\\\Vashon\\M password -U Administrator
-Nc 'mount /home/afraser/laptop -u 500 -g 100'
Added interface ip=192.168.2.2 bcast=192.168.2.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Got a positive name query response from 192.168.2.10 ( 192.168.2.10 )

I put an entry in fstab like this:

I try: mount /home/afraser/laptop
and get:

I can access my drive on my NT box no problem, but ls doesn't work.

Oh dear. Yes, I imagine most compilers would choke on that one... but
I'm sure I could write a functionally equivalent (in terms of
input/output) program in a finite amount of assembly in a finite
amount of time.
In fact, given any script which terminates (in any scripting language)
it should be at least *possible* to produce an equivalent assembly
program (or equivalent C program or whatever) of finite length and
complexity, should it not?
I should have qualified "compile" with "successfully" I suppose...

Date: Fri, 02 Jul 1999 12:11:50 -0400
I have been getting 'xmit on stopped card' messages during boot
up with my main Linux server (TX-PRO II motherboard, NE2000 clone
or 3COM Etherlink-II ISA network card, Linux kernel 2.0.36) along
with serious problems ifconfig'ing the network interface. I found
a few messages on deja-news concerning similar problems and a
section of the netatalk page as well.
The news messages said that changing the IRQ and I/O ports of the
NE2000 card fixed a conflict with some built-in hardware on the
TX-PRO II motherboard, but I couldn't duplicate the fix. Even when
I replaced the NE2000 card with an old Etherlink-II card I still
got 'xmit on stopped card' errors during boot and I completely
lost the abiltiy to ifconfig the interface.
When I booted with the NE2000 it would be recognized early in the
boot process, right after the hard drive partitions, with the
correct I/O port and IRQ, but later (right around the time the
system goes multi-user) the boot process would complain about
the IRQ being used by an unknown device.
The info on the netatalk page, while it may apply to me, didn't
have any answers.
Does anyone know what is going on here. I'm getting pretty
frustrated with the whole mess. If I can't clear the problem
up I'm going to buy a new system and sacrifice the TX-PRO II
and Co. to the nether-gods in Redmond. (I've needed an excuse
to set up a game box)

I have been assigned the task of setting up email for about 4k people. I
have been told I can do it anyway that I want, BUT I must use linux. Are
there any websites or books that anyone can recommend that might help me do
this. I need to be able to give them the hardware requirements fairly soon.
The project itself has to be completed by August. I am not new to unix but I
am by no means a pro. I am pretty much a newbie to linux since I have not
used it for some time (since version 2 more or less).
Roughly, I need to know how to setup up email on a linux box(es), and what
client software can be used to access the email. While I have used pine I
would prefer to somehow be able to use Outlook express or similar product as
the client software. We have a fairly large network and all the clients are
w95, w98, or NT, and some users will be accessing their email via the web.
Is it possible to use a GUI and or web browser interface. If it is where can
I find out how to do it. I need to become an email pro real quick. Any
recommended reference information would be appreciated big time.
