: Hello, I'm having a problem with a couple of modems. The first I put in

XISP is a very good dial-up application. You can give it a try:

Because Linux is more powerful than Windows, the burden of Doing the
Right Thing should be on Linux, because it's expected that Linux can
handle it.

Did you build netatalk yourself?
I had the same problem myself after installing the prebuilt package
netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.0-5.i386.rpm. Upgrading to
netatalk-1.4b2+asun2.1.3-1.i386.rpm solved the problem

Sounds like you found the same thing I ran into tonight... With the
newer kernels that load modules (like the NIC/eth0) it knows that
there's a NIC out there... somewhere.
I ended up having to do an insmod /lib/modules/preferred/net/eepro100.o
I went to a shell and ran ifconfig eth0 add.res.s then go into
Linuxconf, verify the IP settings that were in there and exit and
*activate* the change. Once I did that the NIC was fine. Now I just
have to find out how/what/where to put those statements for the NIc and
a couple of VFAT fs I have so they get autoloaded at boot up.

I tried setting the 3c509 to IRQ 15 port 0x270 through dos.
Linux accepted it alone. Then I added the ne2000 card which
has IRQ 10 port 0x300. I added the line
"ether=3D15,0x270,eth0 ether=3D10,0x300,eth1" to my lilo.conf.
now when it boots it only sees the ne2000 card and sets it to
eth0. What gives? I'm using Slackware if that could be the
difference, but I followed the instruction manual and read the
ethernet howto.
Thanks again,
Mike

Depends entirely on the service you are configuring, for example, with decent
software, such as squid, ntp, etc, you can set the ip listening address for
which the process is to use as it's source ip address.
Best to consult with the vendor of the software for this sort of info.

Heath Harry.

I finally got it to work.
For anyone else with the same problem here is what I did.
I had to take both cards out of PnP mode and set the IRQs
and base port numbers to different values. Then I added a
line:
append "ether=15,0x270,eth0 ether=10,0x300,eth1"
then ran lilo
rebooted and it worked fine.
Now on to figuring out IP masquerading.
Thanks

if you are using Redhat linux do this
otherwise find the way.
cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts

if [ ! -f $SLEEPPIDFILE ]; then
# the parent must have timed out already -- we can't do much about

echo "DHCP configured but ifup timed out"

# get the pid of the process which is waiting for this to complete
SLEEPPID=`cat $SLEEPPIDFILE`
rm -f $SLEEPPIDFILE
kill $SLEEPPID

I am sorry, this is sux too. However you are using old Hardware
if you want fast, I need cash, then do what I say

seems like you don't have a modem, just joking. Don't worry. do this
do you have windows-95 in same computer then check where is the modem
if it com2 then in linux /dev/ttyS1, if you don't have any
idea about modem
do this:
login as root
type minicom -s then you'll see this

select Serial port setup, then you'll see

on you keyboard hit a, just biside serial device
type /dev/ttyS0 then hit Esc.
save your setting, and Exit, Note do not say exit form minicom
untill you see

do the above, ever time change /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, /dev/ttyS3

Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 09:16:21 GMT
I am not happy with the route the internet providers choose between my work
and home computers. The packets get usually routed via a network that is
really slow. I have found a gateway that I can communicate with fast both
from home and work.
The question is - can I somehow affect the routing that will be chosen?
Can I do it from my box or do I have to make the gateway collaborate (make it
forward my packets to the destination)? If the latter, what software would be
used on this gateway?
Thanks,
F.

The company I work for takes on plenty of fresh graduates. Probably
150 this year (mostly _not_ in my office). Also, "fresh" PhDs, but
that's quite different.

Maybe. Personally, I had some demonstrable experience *before*
leaving University, though.

Hallo,
I`m actually trieing to use my linux mashine as Appletalk server.
My problem is, that I can`t start the atalkd daemon.
My kernel seems to be ready since I get a "Appletalk 0.17 for Linux
NET3.035"
after typing "dmesg | grep Apple"
If I try to start atalkd manually I get "AppleTalk not up! Child exited
with 1."
What`s wrong on my system ?

Subject: Strange Win98-Linux networking problem
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 09:42:01 GMT
Hi everyone,
I'm having big problems getting my linux box to communicate with my Win98
machine through a crossover UTP cable. I know the hardware works because I
managed to connect the machines successfully with both of them running
Windows, but I had no luck in configuring the network with Linux. My setup is
the following
Win98 :
D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 NIC
Adapter settings:
Connection Type= Autosense
DMA Burst Length=256 DWORDS
Recieve Buffers=64
Recieve Threshold=1024 bytes
Transmit Buffers=4
Transmit Threshold=1024 bytes
TCP/IP settings :
IP : 10.0.2.254, Netmask 255.0.0.0 (No gatway, no DNS, no WINS)
Linux :
Kernel v. 2.0.34
NICs : RealTek RTL8139(clone) or Cnet Pro-120 (having a Macronix 98715 PMAC
chip)
I tried both the above cards with no success.
Here are dumps of the various setings :

The symptoms are simple. Nothing seems to be passing between the two
computers either way. I cannot ping from Linux to Win or vice versa. The fact
that I tried two different NICs with the same results seems to suggest that
there is something wrong with my interface settings but for the life of me I
can't figure out what. Another possiblility is perhaps that the culprit is
the crossover cable. I don't know though, because as I've said above, it
works fine when both machines are running Win95/98. An interesting thing is
that ifconfig insists on labelling eth0 as a 10Mbps Ethernet even though both
NICs are 100Mbps.
I'm no network guru, although I've had occasion in the past to set up various
networks both
with and without Linux but I've never had so many problems setting a network
up. Please, if
anyone knows what I'm doing wrong, help me!
Please contact me at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
Thanks.
Etienne
