Just thought somebody should point out that the correct spelling is
"gyp", and that the word is in fact racist [against Gypsies].
This is one of those all-too-common words that almost nobody *realizes*
is insulting, so I'm sure the original poster meant no disrespect.
"What a rip-off" would probably be more appropriate.

If you do a dmesg |more, you will see your system start up and you can
look for eth0. From there setup it up with ifconfig, add your route, and
then start pinging

www.nat32.com Address Translation for windows, doesn't do well on UDP.
All you have to do is add the 95 machine as the gateway. This makes it
look like a direct connection, so all utils can be used.
Or you can setup any proxy you find @ www.tucows.com and just setup
netscape under linux with the ip of the 95 machine.
And of course you will see laters post similar to this, change around and
have your linux box setup with ip masq and diald to dial when ever needed.

Bad idea. For safety reasons alone, *always* have a standard phone line
available. In the event of a power failure, you will always have access
to a standard phone line, can't say that for ISDN, even with a UPS.

I have a Linux box connected to the internet via a modem and a W95 box
connected to the Linux box via TCP/IP.
2 questions:
1. Once the Linux box is connected to my ISP , I can go to the W95 box,
Telnet into the Linux box, run LYNX and get text only access to the
Internet. Is it possible to use Netscape or Explorer on the W95 box so
that graphical browsing is available?(I have spent many nights playing
with SAMBA and trying to understand IP_Masquerade but I can not get
beyond the point I described above).
2. My Linux box shows up in Network Neighbourhood on the W95 box and I
can browse it from there with no problem. How do I access files on the
W95 box from the Linux box?I presume that this would be done by mounting
the remote system's drives in some way but I am lost with this one.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: telnet sessions go to sleep?
Date: 18 Jun 1999 15:38:43 -0600
Hi everyone. I'm attempting to diagnose a problem that's driving me
batty.
I usually leave two or three Telnet windows logged in from my OpenStep
machine to my Linux box. After a period of time I haven't determined yet
(I think about an hour) the sessions go to sleep. When I go back to those
windows again, depending on how long they've been idle it takes anywhere
from 8 seconds to wake them up to three or four minutes. Sometimes it's
so long that the Telnet session times out entirely, causing me to lose
whatever processes (usually vi) I had going in the various windows.
Needless to say, it's annoying. I keep other Telnet sessions to other
machines without having this problem, so the problem is on the Linux side.
Can anyone tell me where this kind of stuff is set?
The machine itself is an Intel box running Redhat 6.0. I've thought it
might be going to sleep, but I can still ping it or bring up a web page
from it almost instantaneously.
Thanks in advance for any direction in which someone could point me.

What kernel version are you booting? I think everything north of 2.0.x
has support for this card (maybe even earlier).
say yes to CONFIG_VORTEX under CONFIG_NET_VENDOR_3COM
If you use menuconfig, this is 3c90x support (Vortex/Boomerang).
I am running 2.2.5-22 and have 3 3c905b's all running quite happily.
Good luck

Why ? You have just described all of the services of NT, perhaps you really
want NT ?
You could you Samba for file services, otherwise...

Subject: Which is eth0, and which eth1?
Date: Fri, 18 Jun 1999 23:00:35 GMT
I just upgraded from 2.2.5-15 to 2.2.10. I have 2 PCI NICs: a eepro on the
m/b and a PCI DEC tulip. My conf.modules has eth0 as tulip and eth1 as
eepro. No 'ether' line.
When I boot 2.2.5-15 it finds the DEC tulip as eth0 - which is connected to
the cable modem. I've not been able to get it to find eepro - connected to
my home lan - but that's OK.
When I boot 2.2.10 *with the same conf.modules* it finds eth0 as eepro. It
doesn't find the DEC tulip. Then it assigns all to eepro the eth0 ip info -
which should bind to the DEC tulip card. None of the NIC drivers are built
in the kernel.
How do I control which is eth0 and eth1 ( I thought it was conf.modules! ).
I've care less about getting both cards to work ( actually, I've given up ).
I just don't want ot have to switch cables each time I get a new kernel.
Thanks.

Why don't you just compile the drivers into the kernel? I know you can control
the order in which they are found through an append command in lilo.conf -- not
to mention they will both be recognized -- you might want to use 2.2.5-22 -- as
its specifically for your RedHat release. You might want to see
http://metalab.unc.edu/linux/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO-10.html#ss10.2
I think it suggests putting "alias eth0 tulip" and "alias eth1 other-driver".
Also, Donald Becker's multi-card how-to:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/multicard.html
You can definitely get them both working if you want to. I have one machine w/
3 different types of ether cards in it.
Write back if you need more specifics,
Hope this helps,
John

you run into some people right near by. (I live in Darien).

I have restarted the httpd service every time that I change anything. Just
to be safe, I did it again after receiving your posting. No good.
The DirectoryIndex line in srm.conf has a list of files to look for. The
order is:
index.htm
index.html
index.shtml
index.cgi
That's it. If you can remember what you did to fix this, please let me
know.
