Well, I was having IRQ conflicts with my modem. So, what I ended up doing
was disabling COM 2 in bios and configure my modem to COM2 irq 3. Well, now
my modem works great, however, my printer no longer works (it used to work
fine). When I have linux try to autodetect it, it can't find any printers,
where before it always could. It is on LPT1 in windows (which is does still
print in windows). Any idea what this could be? By disabling COM2 did I mess
up LPT1?
Thanks

PMFJI, but I'm currently struggling with the next step: I
bought a 10/100Mbps switching hub to replace an old 10Mbps that is
connected to one port on a 100Mbps switch:

100Mbps switch -> 10/100Mbps swiching hub -> 10Mbps hub

The reason is that I don't have any port left on the 100Mbps
switch, and some of the PCs that were connected to that 10Mbps often
need fast connections between them (developers sending code, and
running compilers on a build machine in their area), in addition to
fast connections to the "backbone" 100Mbps switch above it, where
servers reside.

After adding this new switching hub in the middle, I connected
the old 10Mbps to one of its ports (I wanted to resuse the 10Mbps hub
that this switching hub replaced, because other PCs don't need 100Mbps
connections.)

=> None of the PCs connected to this 3rd-level hub can connect to PCs
that are connected to the other 2 devices !

Would this be due to
- a lack of space for additional MAC addresses in the switching hub,
- the switching hub can't negotiate speed because it's a hub and not a
NIC that is connected to one of its ports
- 10/100Mbs switching hubs don't support both speeds on all of its
ports, but only on some of them, ie. the 10Mbps hub happens to be
connected to a 100Mbps-only port on the switching hub?

BTW, the switch is a 3Com, the 10/100Mbps below it is a DLink,
and the 10Mbps below it is an Accton. I made sure I was using straight
cables connected to so-called upling or MDIX ports, and I can see LEDs
lighting up.

Thanks for any tip,
FF.

ya its pretty clear.
one thing is you can check your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny
and change them accordingly..
or a connection on an ftp port is closed if there is no ftpd running
on that server.

There's a whole section on "not 8-bit clean" in the PPP-HOWTO. It almost
always means that, for one reason or another, the ISP isn't running PPP
but is stuck at a text program prompt, e.g., login or password.

Try replacing any CONNECT '' chat/send with CONNECT '\d\c' . If that
doesn't work then find the chat script and look for something else wrong
there. You can use chat with the '-v' option to get chat messages and
pppd with the 'debug' option to get better pppd messages.

It doesn't need, or like, the options line. Just say
alias eth1 3c509 and it will work (assuming you've
disabled PnP using the 3c5x9cfg program that came
on floppy two when you bought the NIC)

I have two 3c509bs in my linux box, and my conf.modules
reads:

alias eth0 3c509
alias eth1 3c509

and it works fine.

If you look closely at your startup log file you'll see something
telling you that the symbol io doesn't exist in 3c509.

You'll get that error with the 2.2.x kernel series when you haven't

recommend installing ppp-2.3.7 .

/etc/named.boot and the files that are referenced in here dir + file like
/var/named/named.local for ex.
/etc/smb.conf You might have a line in there with an IP address wich isn't
correct
/etc/services is there a line like :

Normally your modem and printer won't be on the same IRQ.
Com 1 & 3 are on IRQ 4
Com 2 & 4 are on IRQ 3

LPT 1 is on IRQ 7
LPT 2 is on IRQ 5

Check your /etc/conf.modules file. Some of these things might have settings in
there. Check dmesg for messages while booting your box.

Hi Mark,

I ran accross the exact same problem today. And after a few hours a finally
worked it out.
All you need to do is open an x11 window, start the NETCFG
In the interface section you can see your adaptors. Select your 3c509, select
edit and choose... "enable on boot"!
It's that simple...

I've got the 3590B-TX as well, and I didn't have any probelms with it -
I've still got Pnp running too.

The only thing I can recommend is to try playing around with the legacy
& PnP setting on IRQs in your BIOS settings, that may help (I set all
mine to Pnp except IRQ5 for my SB16).

I noticed that your using v0.99e, I'm use v0.99H. You may want to get
the latest drivers from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html. You didn't
mention which kernel your using but I know that v2.2.x uses the v0.99H
of the 3c59x driver.

Subject: Cable Modem? Distributing over small network.

If I were to get a cable modem would it be compatible with Linux? I
have a small network, all of nodes have an 10Mbps ISA Ethernet card. I
have a 5-port Ethernet HUB and Cat-5 cabling. I'm running a Samba
server with two Win95 nodes. How would I be able to set up the cable
modem so that all nodes on the network could access the Internet. Would
I need to buy a more expensive switch. Could my Linux box act as a
gateway to the Cable network?
Has anyone done this?

Thanks,
Peter

I don't have a "/etc/named.boot" file. Should I?

In "etc/services" I have:

netbios-ssn 139/tcp nbssn
netbios-ssn 139/udp nbssn

I put the udp line in myself when I stumbled across something that said
I should have it. It didn't work with or without it, tho.

My 2-node network is set up with my Linux box on 192.168.1.1 and my
Win98 machine on 192.168.1.2. I can telnet from the Win98 box and login
to the Linux machine, so I think my addresses are fine.

In case it makes any difference, my Linux box is also connected to the
Internet via a cable modem (connected to eth0) and I have an ip alias
eth0:0 that is bound to the 192.168.1.1 address. I also have ip
masquerading enabled and the Win98 machine can surf the Internet fine
through the cable modem on my Linux box.

Thanks very much for your help... and any more you can give me :)
