Really it's not very hard on RH.

Edit your /etc/conf.modules and put the appropriate lines (alias eth0 3c5x9, alias
eth1 3c59x, etc, etc).
Run netcfg and configure the interfaces.

That's about it...

When I said "European", I was including Russia. Australia/New
Zealand/Canada went wherever Britain went.

As for Japan/China, until Dec, 1941 that was almost a separate, regional
war. Even though there were various treaties and non-aggression pacts
between Japan and the other players, most nations were _not_ at war with
Japan before that, including Britain. Also Canada, Poland, South
Africa, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

Between Dec 7, 1941 and Dec 13, 1941, all those countries (and more)
declared war on Japan, and in addition the U.S., the Central American
countries, Cuba, and a few others declared war on Japan _and_
Germany/Italy.

There's an argument to be made that this mushrooming of the conflict in
the space of less than a week, "choosing up sides" as it were, is the
real start to the _world_ war. Whether it would have been called a
"World War" if none of those things had happened is something we'll
never know.

I actually don't agree with the original assertion; I've always felt
that WWII started on Sep. 1, 1939, no later than Sep. 3, 1939. That's
the beginning of the conflict that directly grew into WWII, with no
intervening peace, so it's all WWII to me. But that's just MHO.

All I was trying to say was that the original poster wasn't saying that
no war exists unless the U.S. is a party to it (which was the ridiculous
comment made in a followup), or even necessarily that no world war
exists unless the U.S. is involved, although some would make that
argument (would we still call it WWII if Great Britain hadn't been
involved, for example? Maybe, maybe not. Does it matter? I can't for
the life of me see how.)

I'm done.

I'm trying to connect to prodigy internet with slackware 3.6, i can connect
fine and login completely, i can also ping everywhere but only if i use the
ip. If i use a domain name, it just sits there and i have to control-c it to
quit. After i try looking up a domain name, i can no
longer ping anything (even my host) using ip addresses (it just sits there).

I have resolv.conf set up using correct DNS servers (the same ones im using
on my windows computer)

all the other settingas are at the defaults, i dont have a eth. card or
anything.

Can anyone help?
Thanks

Hi,

Could someone please give me some help with my linux dialin server that is
configured with mgetty and AutoPPP? When I dial into the server with a
windows machine, it fires the AutoPPP up fine and everything works great,
but when I try to dial in with another linux box, it only establishes a
serial connection and eventually times out. Thanks much!

They're cool if you've got a setup that's similar to what they've got
but my setup is nothing like it.

Just setting the Logon Validation to 'NT domain' seriously messes with
my logon names and passwords for dial-up networking on my Windows
machine. I have 13 different dial-up setups (I do a lot web design for
other clients) and every time I set the Logon Validation to 'NT
domain', I lose the automatic dial-up option and have to retype in the
passwords every time I use dial-up networking (not very nice if you
have to remember 12 passwords not chosen by me). Dunno if that's what
is supposed to happen but I don't like it, so I was wondering if it is
possible to log on to the Linux machine using only the 'quick logon'
option? If so, what would the relevant smb.conf lines be?

Sounds like your A.B.C isn't unique. You should be using RFC 1918 addresses:
either 10.X.X.X with netmask 255.0.0.0, 172.16.X.X with netmask 255.255.0.0, or
192.168.X.X with netmask 255.255.255.0. Most people with small LANs use
192.168.1.X.

The purpose of RFC 1918 addresses is to allow private networks to have locally
unique addresses without having to register for an official block of IPs.
These addresses are not routed over the internet, so you will never cause an
address conflict. If, as I suspect, you're using addresses that don't fit into
the above ranges, you're probably able to ping them from your gateway because
they exist somewhere else over the internet.

Hi,

we got a mini LAN here. There is a PC hooked up to it on which Linux
SuSe 5.0
Kernel 2.0.30 is installiert. We just installed a DLink DE-530CT network
card into the PC and configured it unter Windows 95.

I have not done a lot research. I wonder if some can tell me:

1) if the installed Kernel-Version already contains the driver. How
could I verify this?

2) If I need to get a driver, where can I find it?

3) How do I set up Linux to make use of the card

Hints on where I could find relevant documentation on the net would also
be greatly appreciated

There is always away.
But here are some points.

The Good:
One:
NetZero Uses standard Dial-Up-Networking (VPN)
and all the Microsoft Default protocols.

Two:
Written in Java! I think? (See coffee cup Icon). :P
And Like a good or bad cup of coffee works anywhere.

Three:
There is WINE (windows emulator) when all else fails. :)

The bad:
One:
Netzero MUST start the services. Probably looking for specific ones by
name.

Two:
This would require knowledge of Linux VPN and Windows VPN.
I knowonly how to setup windows.

Three:
I have no clue what goes on behind the scenes. It would be trial and
error. But since it took me a month of repeated nightly attempts to
install Linux anyway. (my CDRom which isn't supported died). I don't
give up easily. I just need to know what (how to's software etc. to do
this.)

Subject: Win98->Linux Networking questions
Date: 7 Jul 1999 17:30:53 GMT

Hello,

I've recently started to setup a network between my Win98 and Linux
box, to share Internet and printing capabilities via Samba.

I'm having a few issues with setup, and configuring IP addresses.
i'm running a crossover cable in between the 2 systems, and I'm
assuming its correct. If needed, I can post the color combos on the
cable to verify if they are indeed correct.

Here's the setup that I've done so far:

Linux box IP: 192.168.0.1
Win 98 IP: 192.168.0.2
Netmask for both systems: 255.255.255.0
Linux Broadcast: 192.168.0.255

I haven't set a gateway for both systems yet, because I'm not sure
what to set it to. i'm not connecting to any other subnets or anything,
so I'm not sure its needed.

Questions:

1. What should be the gateway address for both systems in this
configuration?

2. What route command should be in my rc.inet1 startup script on
the Linux box?

3. Do any special files need to be setup on the Win98 side?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Yep. I added the user and password but it still wouldn't let me log
into the Linux machine. But if you check the HOW-TO for the Windows
registry hack it allows for plain text passwords, which is what Linux
is looking for. After doing the hack it works perfectly fine. Just
make sure you're adding the same user to Linux as you use in Windows.

Have you tried the appropriate kernel options? There is a kernel-options-howto that
describes all that.

Basically its ether=<irq>,<addr>,<if>, e. g. ether=15,0x300,eth0.

I posted this as a reply to a similar message.

I had to rebuid my kernel to support the card I have (3Com 3c515). It works
pretty well. The kernel re-build was not hard, just time consuming. Look in
the "Kernel" HOWTO file. I took the defaults for most of the configuration
questions.
