Cory,
You may want to check out this link for PAP/CHAP help. There is good info
there. I followed this set up and connected the very first time. I am having
problems automating my set up though. But I do connect and can surf the 'net.

Add the line

export PATH=$PATH:/what/you/want

to your /etc/profile for a system-wide change, or in ~/.profile for a
change just for that user.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Newbie linux user here, trying to set up httpd, sendmail, pop3, etc on my
little linux box. ive got sendmail working fine, and pop3 as well. the only
complication is that i cant send mail directly from or to the linux box. it has
a fixed numerical IP but no official domain name (yet). this is the reason i
cant send FROM it, as i get a response from whoever im trying to send mail to
that the domain name must be authentic etc, which makes sense. but would this
also be why i cant write to someone on this machine? i thought a simple
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (with the real IP number) would suffice, and work. but
now that i think of it im not sure whether i need to configure some program to
receive mail, or if sendmail handles that as well. so, is there a way to get
mail working with only a numeric ip, or do i have to wait the week or two until
i get the domain name etc worked out?
second, apache obviously doesnt like this either. for some reason all browsers
ive tried, when logging into my test web page at 123.456.789.999/~testuser, i
see on the bottom of the browser that it connects, and then at some point tries
to access random.temporary.domain.name. can i do the same for apache (ie tell
it to only use the numeric IP)?

other than that, it's been only two days and im amazed i got this far! linux
isnt nearly so hard as everyone seems to think.

thanks
freddie

Your pppd claims the ISP? to authenificate itself.
Remove require-pap,auth or require-chap from /etc/ppp/options
and insert instead debug

Then check the logfiles in /var/log

 Look at http://www.mindcraft.com/whitepapers/nts4rhlinux.html

Notice they never bothered to get all the RAM to work. Only 980MB or so,
so the NT is using over 4X the memory. Fair Test? Doubtful..
I do believe that LInux will support more than that. But listen to what
 they say:

"The Linux kernel limited itself to use only 960 MB of RAM"

Sound like a pile of **** to me.

Let them Test an EQUIVALENT system, hardware to hardware!!!!!!

Find a copy of ttcp. This is a pretty standard way of testing networks
quickly and easily. It comes as source and is generally compilable on
most systems. Give it a try. Sorry, I can't help you as to where to find
it, but it lies around various places and is free.

route problems. You probably have a default route on eth0
(route -n
0.0.0.0 ...... eth0)
in which case pppd will refuse to set up a default route on ppp0
Get rid of the default route
route del default
before running pppd

The users info about ftp in tcpcfg.exe security page comes from
TRUSERS file. If I edit TRUSERS file, the ftp security info page of
tcpcfg.exe is updated accordingly. So they're essentially the same.
Any other tips on why I can't ftp to OS/2?

Assuming you typed the correct password (watch your case) You may be stumbling
over "plain text password" the default for windoze is encrypt passwords and
the default for samba is plain text passwords
look in the samba docs for the registry entry needed for plain text or
configure samba for encrypted passwords.

This says to me: "he needs to use the initialization string Windows uses!
Why? I had a similar problem (ppp worked fine, until ISP changed something, then
I started getting super-slow connections under Linux, but fast ones under Windows).
Here is how I solved it:

===================
Look in the Windows registry under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem

Find the modem (should be 0000, 0001 or some such I suppose), click on the plus sign
next to it to open it up, and look for a key called 'Init'. Click on it, and you
should see
your initialization string in the right pane. Copy it down, boot Linux, and put it in
your chat script. Away you go (hopefully)!

Of course, your mileage may vary. I don't know if your registry will look exactly the
same as mine, but it's worth a shot.
====================

As for your other questions, I don't know. But with any luck, you'll be able to find
the answers to them on the net... under Linux. :-)

Hope this helps,

The license manager is running correctly when I am on the network but
not when I am not. I read that I should be able to ping or telnet
myhostname anyway.
My question is how should I configure the network so that when I am not on
the network I would still be able to telnet/ping hostname
I have tried to add in /etc/hosts the hostname to the localhost :
127.0.0.1 localhost hostname hostname.domainname
so that I can telnet/ping but still the license manager complains that it
cannot reach the hostname (Network unreachable)
Is there another way so that I could telnet/ping hostname ?
Best regards

We are looking into setting up a Linux web server at my company and need some
one with real world EXPERIENCE in Linux and Apache. In addition, this person
needs to be able to communicate with and essentially instruct the network
manager in the basics of managing this system. Professional references are a
definite plus! Current resume required.

Under "Windows NT Server 4.0 Configuration", it says:
Used 1024 MB of RAM (set maxmem=1024 in boot.ini)

> Sound like a pile of **** to me.

Depending on what "****" is, that may be overstated.
I don't see why they did not tell NTS to use 960 MB,
but it could be an adjustment that reflects differences
between how Linux kernel usage is reported and
what the maxmem parameter means to NT. Still,
960 is close enough to 1024 that it takes a lot of
wishful thinking to make much of the difference.

> Let them Test an EQUIVALENT system, hardware to hardware!!!!!!

Under "Configuration and Tuning" they claimed:
We used the same Dell PowerEdge 6300/400 to test
both Windows NT Server 4.0 and Red Hat Linux 5.2
upgraded to the Linux 2.2.2 kernel.

Near the end of the report, Mindcraft states:
Our test results should be reproducible by others
using the same test lab configuration, the same
Dell computer, and the software configurations
and modifications documented in this report.

I think their results deserve credence for what
they mean on that system with those benchmarks.
Any benchmarking effort is subject to bias in what
benchmarks are chosen, so the ~3x result might not
apply in applications that matter to most people. I
would not be surprised, given the development
environment in which Linux gets tweaked, if it has
been optimized more for smaller systems. But I
think it is a mistake to write off Mindcraft's result
as "rigged" without better evidence.

(Bias warning: I am an ex-employee of Microsoft
who does not believe in the "Evil Empire" notion.
I am also a Linux fan and user, but not a "convert".)
