Subject: Scheduled Dial-up PPP occasionally fails
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 19:12:16 GMT
I have a Redhat 5.2 system that regularly connects via cron/PPP.
IBM Thinkpad 385DX Laptop.
However, the US Robotics modem and Linux occasionally gets in a
strange state where the system never sees the modem. I watch the logs,
and it says that it's dialing, but there is no dialtone. It thinks
it's dialing, but obviously it never connects.
If I run minicom at this time, I can't talk to the modem.
I type AT<return> and I do not get an "OK."
In fact, the cursor is at the beginning of the AT initialization
line, instead of the beginning of the next line.
Also, the lights on the modem behave differently. I think the Request to
Send light turns on, and stays there.
When this problem happens, I tried
1) Waiting for the PPP discipline to unregister
2) Power cycle the modem
3) Reboot the Linux box
This SOMETIMES works, but recently I've been trying everything, and
finally I get it working again. Perhaps I have a bad Serial cable?
Also, if I close the lid on the Laptop, the modem disconnects.
This is not something that happened before, but it may be a different
problem. It seems to work when I go into the linux control panel
and start the session that way.
Anyone have any suggestions on what I should check? Thanks!!!!!!

I have proftpd running on RH6 and it works fine.

Anyone got Caldera 2.2 (kernel 2.2.5) working with ADSL?
It seems that the dhcp client (ver 1.3.17) is unable to get the IP
address (I have though both Rx and Tx packets!). Moreover, it's shutting
down the eth0
card (3Com509, correctly installed).
>From what I read in other NGs, it seems that I'm missing some files (I
wander why they were not created when I first choose the option DHCP?!).
I need to find out what files are needed/involved in the dhcp process.
Pls help, someone!

I fixed it over the weekend. My ISP's IP wasn't responding to ping.
But I've got PPP and IP masquerade working just fine, now.

Subject: need help using Linux as router at job!!!!
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 19:08:43 GMT
We have a incoming T1 to a CSU/DSU to a cisco 2500 router. My impression
was that the vendor would setup the port connecting to our side with our
ip address and all would be well. He says I need a router or firewall to
do translation because he also is using our network address (10.*.*.*).
I would like to setup a Linux machine to do the router/firewall role. I
assume I will need 2 network cards and will need to run ip_masquerading.
I also assume I will place this machine between the vendor router and
our hub to allow 'my' users access to this line.
Where can I get more information of this type of senario. This is my
first attempt at sneaking Linux into a critical position at the company.
And I want to make it Look GOOD.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Eddie

What kind of "dos workstation" and what kind of access do you want?
Assuming they're on a network, on DOS/Win, you could use trumpet
winsock and any of the winsock-compatible applications. If it's
a text-based machine, there's NCSA telnet. There have been DOS
Xservers around, but I don't know if you could still find one.

The ftp port error are solved this way
insmod ip_masq_ftp
What you are doing, of course, is inserting the precompiled
ip_masq_ftp module. You can recompile kernel and include this module
if the command line method works.

No, you'll have to turn it on in the kernel. Type 'make menuconfig' or 'make

Thanks for the all responses. I am explicitly exporting all the

In linux.redhat John Bell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

(: The problem was related to having an entry in the exports file
which wasn't a mountpoint on the local system (an ugly kludge I was
thinking of to have the same exports file across a total of about 40
machines).
In any case, this behaviour is interesting because I can explicitly
kill all the relevant processes myself and restart NFS and it works
fine.

Using RedHat 6.0, I have smbmounted a NT4.0-sp4 filesystem, and the file
dates displayed on the Linux side
are widly wrong, anywhere from Nov. 11, 1914 up to April 2011 in one
directory.
Initially, when I looked at the same directory locally (using Windows
Explorer) all the dates looked fine, so I concluded smbfs was just
reading the info wrong.
Later, I found that after doing a number of read operations on the
mounted filesystem (mostly done by some massive "diff -r" and "find .
-whatever" commands), the *LOCAL* versions of the dates came into sync
with the wildly wrong ones.
So, I am left with an NT filesystem whose dates are completely hosed
(but file data content is OK).
Anyone know what is happening? Any fixes available?

Hi Everyone
I recently help setup redhat 6.0 on a friends computer and Im now trying
to network it at my university. I can ping machines within the
university but not outside. I think this may be because I do not have a
DNS entry for the computer (yet) tho i do have an IP number of course.
My real problem is tho, the netcfg program insists I give a host name
for the network connection to work. I have been making up names. With a
made up name I can ping inside the building, not outside, but without a
name, well it just wont let me not put a name. Any ideas what is going
on? Most computers here (macs and pc's) dont have names bound to ip
numbers and they manage to talk outside the building fine.

First, thanks to all those who responded to my question about I2O
wrappers in a Linux RTOS environment. We've kind of decided we might
end up writing I2O support for ourselves, so now the question we have
boils down to the following...
As a refresher, I work for a group considering Linux in an embedded
application using a MIPS processor and a Galileo support chip. We are
defining embedded as meaning "diskless, file system-less, and bootable
from prom." Topics under discussion on our end include:
-is Linux available for such an application, that is, are there real
Linux kernels and sources available right now?
-are there development tools available?
-are there companies that might be able to aid us in development of
kernel specific and/or application code?
-for each affirmative answer, where specifically can we go to find what
we need?
So far I've only been able to dig up bits and pieces while we really
need a more comprehensive answer. As things are going I think we can
contribute several things to the Linux community out of the project we
are working on but I've got to convince management that Linux is the way
to go first.
Any help will be very appreciated, and again, thanks to all those who
responded to my first e-mail; the answers provided really helped!

First the good news - it *can* be done (after all, that's effectivley
what's happening when you connect to the Internet). Now the bad news - I
can't off hand remember how. I believe you should read up on the Linux
PPP How-To as that should give you some hints, also (I think) the How-To
on serial terminals.
However, even if you get this going, you will still be restricted to
using Telnet, FTP amd Web Browsers to use your Linux box, which is ok
but sort of restrictive. Why is it that you don't want to install
Appletalk on you Linux machine (just out of curiosity) ?
I would personally advise purchasing a network card for the Mac as they
really arn't that expensive these days - just make sure you get one with
Mac drivers. Don't do what I initially did and buy a noname PCI Ethernet
card and just assume that the Apple Ethernet drivers will work - they
won't. State that you need it for a Mac. However, a cheapo PCI NE2000
run-alike card for the Linux box (I'm assuming it's an Intel PC or
clone) shouldn't set you back more than 15 or 20 quid (mine didn't) and
will almost certainly work providing you enable it in your kernel. Then
all you need is either a) a cheap hub or b) an ethernet crossover cable.
The crossover cable option is cheaper in the short term and probably all
you actually need. So you could probably do all this for no more than,
say, 50 quid. The speed of it, even with 10Mb cards, is worth it. Using
a Linux package called Netatalk (which comes with most distributions -
I'm using SuSE 6.0) I can now see my Linux box as an extra 2Gb external
hard drive (it mounts on the desktop just like any other drive) and have
succesfully backed up my entire system to it.
Good luck :-)
Jim
