I'd recommend file:/usr/doc/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.html, which has very good
pointers and examples. I'm pretty sure you'll find out what's wrong
while reading through that. if you don't have it on your system, you can
find it online at

Subject: Apache WWW-proxy
Date: 16 Apr 1999 14:04:18 GMT

Hi,

We are using an Apache 1.3 webserver as our WWW-proxy on a SuSe 5.3
(2.0.36) box.
But it puts two extra lines into the files we download: One with the date
the file is downloaded, followed by an empty one. This has something to do
with the caching.
Has anybody an idea how to prevent this?
Btw: Files that were downloaded as the result of a query by a CGI-script on
the 'remote' webserver don't contain these two extra lines.

Peter

Thanks to everyone for their kind help.

I tried all suggestions. The problem is now solved.

In the end I found I discover an upgarde to the BIOS for my motherboard on
the manufacturer's web site. After installing it, the BIOS setup gave me the
option of specifying specific IRQ for particular slots. This was not
possible with the earlier version.

Everything now works fine. Thanks.

We're getting the same problem on our network with 2.2.5 on the
gateway. It is happening with the ip_masq_ftp modules loaded, as
well...

You don't need a proxy server, just use IP masq. Read the howto at
www.linux.org/help
BTW, I've never heard of tinyproxy. If you do want to use a proxy server,
get squid (search freshmeat.net)

   First things first... :-)

Before you bring up the PPP connection to your ISP, does X work
properly? What is the value of your $DISPLAY environment variable?

If your $DISPLAY is set to <nodename>:0.0, the connection may get
munged when you begin using your ISP's DNS once the PPP line comes
up. Try setting the DISPLAY variable to simply: ":0.0" and see what
happens.

Another thing to look at is your /etc/nsswitch.conf file (if you
have one!). Is the "hosts" entry set to DNS first, then "files"; try
swapping those values.

> Something wrong in my network setup ?

The problem is, most likely, not with your network setup. It's
probably a minor configuration issue caused by the changes that
happen when the PPP connection is made.

Subject: Modem will not dial second time
Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 08:43:51 -0500

I am using the Slackware 3.6 installation. After booting LINUX from
DOS and logging in as root, I use the "ppp-go" script to dial my
ISP, which is successful the first time. I then logoff with "ppp-off".
However, I cannot login a second time. I have looked at the PPP
HOWTO and FAQ, which indicated that my modem is not in command mode.
I modified my "pppscript" to send "+++" to reset. However, this does
 not seem to work either.

 Can someone help.

 I have a Practical Peripherals PM336MT modem.
I have included the "pppscript" and the appropriate log messages.

 Thanks

Try ...
1. Use the same login name (and password?) on win98 as on linux. I don't
think this is necessary for all configurations but it makes things easier.
2. Either enable plain text passwords in windows, or enable encrypted
passwords in samba. Enabling plain text passwords in windows is easiest,
check the samba docs or M$ support site.

You are correct, I was totally dyslexic while writing that. You can often
get an ISP to let you use a private IP address for sending to by using

    :192.168.0.1

but not the reverse. Although there are some ISPs that hand out private
network IPs for their clients to use and then NAT them to real IPs.

I'd guess that the IRQ that the modem uses is the same IRQ that the video

Howdy from Texas -

I have just purchased a used Tadpole Sparcbook 3. It has Solaris 2.5.1 on
it, and I have 2.6 on CD. I am told I need a Sun external CD to do the
install of 2.6. I remember about a year ago, I set up a PC with 2.5.1 x86
on it, and configured it as an install server to install other PC's with
Solaris x86.

I no longer have access to the Solaris 2.6 x86 media. My question is this:
Does anyone have any idea how to configure a Linux box as an install server
for Solaris?

I remember it was a relatively complex procedure, involving /etc/ethers and
/etc/hosts, setting up the bootp daemon, and exporting the directory with
the CD copied to it via NFS. Is this doable under Linux?

If not, does anyone have any pointers on how to find a cheap external Sun CD
ROM drive that will work with the Tadpole?

If convenient, please cc: me when you post.

Totally separate things. IP Masquerade is a form of forwarding that changes
packets coming from your internal network so that they appear to be coming
from your gateway host, and keeps track of open connections so that
responses from the outside can be forwarded to the correct machine inside
the network. IP Masquerade is transparent to the client machine, and is not
protocol-specific.

Squid on the other hand is an application proxy that performs FTP and HTTP
proxying. Machines on the inside of the network configure their web browser
to use the machine running Squid as their proxy server; when they make a
connection to the outside world they really connect to the Squid
application, which then makes the web connection on behalf of the client
machine and returns the data retrieved back to the client. Squid also does
caching of web and ftp data to speed up subsequent access to the same site.

It is also possible to set up Squid as a "transparent proxy", meaning that
all connections going through the Squid host are actually proxied by Squid,
without the client machines having to be configured to specifically use a
proxy. This gives the same convenience as IP Masquerade, but again they're
two totally different things: in the case of IP Masquerade the clients
really are connecting to the outside world, in the case of Squid the proxy
is still doing it for them.

Hope this clears things up a bit...

Phil

Hi,

I have a Mandrake-RedHat 5.2 / Netatalk 1.4b2-5 installation that exhibits
some instability. It's a new installation and I'm still testing it. I've
been moving large folders (>20mb) of files on and off the server. With some
regularity the Mac freezes up in the middle of a big transfer. The Linux
server seems unaffected.

I'm a newbie. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Ok,
I have a 3com905b network card but I can't get Linux to see it. In fact I'm
not really sure how the conf.modules file should read. What should the
alias be for the eth0? Considering all my other settings are correct for
the network, finding the right alias should fix everything, right?

Hi,

Does anyone have a software to disable PnP on Linksys EtherPCI card? I
looked everywhere (incl. Linksys web) and I cannot find one. I cannot
plug it in my Linux box since its IRQ just jumps all over the place :-),
and I tried all I could on my bios settings etc...

The chip on the board is Digital 21041.

Thanks,

That's understandable. However, do you know about camps in Kosovo?

The people that are deported are ethnic Shqiptars, however they are
citizens of Serbia.
IMO, a gouvernment that can only end so called "terrorist attacks" by
deporting civilians shows that is not the legal gouvernment. For me,
it even shows the attacks were not terroristic, but the legal use of
force by a people defending itself against a oppressive "gouvernment".

Not too long ago the same paramilitary groups that are now plundering,
burning, raping and killing in Kosovo did the same in Bosnia i
Hercegovina. The same groups _did_ have camps in Bosnia i Hercegovina.
What makes you doubt they have camps now in Kosovo?
Why do fail to notice that most of the refugees are either very old, very
young or women?

You are the one who is positioning yourself like a holocaust denier.
A country is deporting and killing its own citizens.

I don't care about the criminals (but I'd like to see them punished).
I do care about the civilian victims in Kosovo *and* Serbia proper.

P.S. However, I do agree with you that blocking information from Yugoslavia
would be counterproductive.
I only left nl.internet.misbruik in the Followup-To because that is the

Ups, forgot to mention that I did that as well. You can see in output of
netstat -r there is a route to ..65 marked UH.. Any other ideas?

Thanx
