Do you have a hosts file in your Windows machines? You should have the
following files in c:\windows directory
c:\windows\hosts - containing something like this:
# ip address fqn alias
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 frodo.com frodo
192.168.0.2 bilbo.com bilbo
(fqn is fully quallified network name)
also you should have:
c:\windows\lmhosts - containing something like:
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.0.1 frodo #PRE
192.168.0.2 bilbo #PRE
This should prevent Windows DUN from trying to start a dial up networking
connection when you ftp or telnet over to your Linux (192.168.0.2) box. I
believe that what's happening is that DUN doesn't realize that frodo and bilbo
(in my example) are local machines and is trying to do DNS on them. If they
exist in the hosts file, then it shouldnt need to resolve anything, thus DNS
wont fire up a connection (I think). As to your second connection, ping is a
special kind of protocol (not sure exactly), but I think it uses something
called ICMP, which is a IP protocol that doesn't have a port associated with
it (unlike TCP). Because of this, it usually doesnt behave exactly the same
way with things like DNS and firewalls as do other kinds or IP protocols.
Again, I'm a bit vague on this.

I am using FA310tx's under slackware I have kernel version 2.0.36 and
the tulip.c is one that came with it..I didn't have to use the new one
(the one provided by Netgear) my other slack box is using 2.0.30 which
needed the new tulip.c . Have you tried using the netgear seperate?
The memory ranges of the two cards could be conflicting and the 3com is
winning.

i figured out that the intruder used a bug in nfsd, respectively libc to

the safest way still is to set up a firewall.

Hi!
We have the problem, that the communication of our Linux PCs with the
DEC Alpha fileserver under OSF1 V4.0 is very slow, Especially the
writing on the mounted filesystem. The transfer rate even seems to be
limited to 350 MB/s independent of the bandwidth. Does someone know

I need some help with getting IP-MASQ up and running. I have my new kernel
up and running (with the config options in the IP-MASQ-HOW-TO selected as 'y'),
I have both NICs up and running (I can ping the internal network, and I can
also use the www, telnet, etc).
However, I cannot get to the internet from any of the other machines on the
local network. I set them up according to the MASQ-HOWTO as well, but get
nada on them. They can ping the linux box, but it doesnt show up in network
neighborhood, but to my understanding it shouldnt since samba is not running
correct?
I have seen many scripts/commands to add in rc.d, but they all seem to be
related to PPP. I am running TCP/IP with a (somewhat) static IP (it changes
every now and then) on the internet connection (cable modem), and static
192.168.*.* on the internal.
BTW my NICs are 3c509 and my kernel is 2.0.36.
Any help will be -=*GREATLY*=- appreciated...Thanks in advance.

Whoever cracks this one is not from this world...
I have a RH 5.2 box that I'm about to develop some SQL on. Since I'm not
that comfortable with Linux setup and config I had a good friend of mine
that works as an sysadmin at Chalmers (large Swedish tech university) help
me out. He helped me install the latest RH distr, MySQl, PHP3, Apche,
whatever. We ran a bunch of tests and everything worked fine.
When I came back to my office I hooked up the Linux box to our network and
nothing happens. It boots without any problems but it's absolutely dead as
far as networking is concerned.
If I do a tcpdump it's completely silent and I can't ping to the Linux box
or from it. There's absolutely no activity on the hub when I do a ping to my
PC, tcpdump displays a "arp who-has 192.168.92.100 tell 192.168.92.99" but
that's it. I've been reconfiguring ifcfg-eth0, nsswitch.conf, network and
just about every other network related file I can think of about a billion
times but to no use. If I add an entry to the arp cache manually (my PC for
instance) I can ping out and get activity on the hub and tcpdump displays a
request for an icmp echo from 192.168.92.100 (my PC) but there's no reply.
When we ran tcpdump on my friends net there was activity like hell but not a
damn thing here. And I didn't change a thing! I unplugged it from his
network and plugged it in here. We even configured the Linux box with my
settings (ip, gw, etc.) and it ran just fine in his net. Not at all in mine.
Any ideas are more than welcome. I'm going nuts here...

NT is probably sending the password encrypted. One way to fix the

If the Internet connection is working, what's the problem? I mean aside
from what tcpdump is showing you? If your only problem is the tcpdump
output, I wouldn't worry about it. From the looks of it, tcpdump is
getting itself confused about some of the packet contents - I doubt
your IP address is 0.84.34.249 or that you're trying to send packets
to IP address 0.0.64.1, are you?? I thought not... I don't know much
about tcpdump (and how it works on PPP lines), but it might be that it
doesn't know how to handle VJ header compressed packets? Can you show
what the same packets look like in hex?? If you can throw in the IPCP
negotiations as well, that might be handy.

Subject: New PPP Program
Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 13:47:44 +0000
I'm about to start developing a ppp program (shell/perl)
which will at first only work with REDNET,
The ppp program (pppconnect) will hopefully grow very big!
the general idea is that its more a terminal based control
panel rather than 'enter this then this and ooh what about this'
Im currently looking for help todo this
I need help in the following ways
1, Someone who is better than me at shell scripting! (good with loops
for example)
2, People to submit modem init strings for different types of modems
3, People to harras modem manufacturers to send me/us a complete of
init
strings for all their modems
4, People to help with questions from end users (not yet though)
5, ISP's to start submitting their dialup config files to me
6, IDEAS.. plenty of them..
Please only reply in mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The Specs for the script will be as follows..
1, program 'pppconnect' this will have either a menu driven
interface (dialog) or will be completley shell driven
an example of the code for the main screen (after setup is this)
(1) connect (current account listed)
(2) disconnect
(3) connect specific account
(4) Setup username/password (current account)
you press one of the numbers and it brings up a sub screen (nice and
simple even for the novice user)
the general idea is it will keep a library in /usr/lib/pppconnect
of All currently submitted isp's then allow you to confiure it (with
username + password)
to dial them up, the ISP makes the config file which will list phone #
dns servers domain name
etc...
2, There will be a several common(ish) dial scripts (or a custom one if
the ISP is weird)
pap/chap + login: password: text ones
as I said at the moment im working on version 1.0a
which will be one that is designed to work with REDNET
and the scripts will also work with REDNET
3, We will grow a big database of modem init strings which will be
downloadable from several
sites, this will allow you to in 'pppconnect (setup modem option which
isn't/won't be in v1)'
to select your modem, this will HOPEFULLY make 99% of modems work
perfectly with linux
and at their best.
version 2+ will add support for other ISP's
and anything else.

You didn't give us too many information, ie what network card do u use?
Try the Ethernet-HOWTO.

It seems to me that IMAP should be fixed. There is no excuse for a
program to read more data than it has allocated a buffer for.
But in the meantime, follow advice about setting up a fire wall. And
change all your passwords!

I'm using SuSE 5.3 which is a Lib5 system.
Isn't there some configuration somewhere I have wrong?
I just noticed your mail address. Well, my 30 days are up, but I am
assuming there is something I can do in YaST or rc.config to fix this.

Subject: redhat 5.0 -> 5.2 broke ppp, why?
Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 20:40:16 -0800
Hello world,
I finally upgraded my rh 5.0 to 5.2, now my ppp scripts are broken,
and I can't get linuxconf, or the control-panel applets to set me
up a working connection.
I've seen quite a bit of griping about rh 5.2 breaking ppp scripts,
has anyone sussed out why yet?
Cheers,
-P.

Subject: ttyS1 continuous newswire feed
Date: 14 Jan 1999 04:06:11 GMT
I have a newswire feed that needs to come into my ttyS1 (com2) port.
The newswire comes in through a (phone) line, passes through a modem, and that
modem plugs into the com port. This modem will be firing a stream of
CONTINUOUS data to the linux box, and I need to be able to set up the server to
listen to this stream of data and process it.
Can someone help me? Or point me in the right direction?
Thank you!
