Subject: DHCP client questions
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 01:19:29 GMT

I am shamefully ignorant about DHCP and am having problems. I have kernel
2.2.3. Previously, I used static IP and /etc/hosts. All worked just fine.
Now, I have a Cisco ISDN router which is providing DHCP server services. My
Windows PC's can get a DHCP IP/lease. They also get DNS servers from DHCP as
well as gateway IP. Linux, however, gets squat! When I try bring up eth0, I
get the following messages in /var/log/messages:

Apr 16 18:23:01 frodo dhcpcd[1118]: ioctl SIOCSIFBRDADDR (ifConfig):
Cannot assign requested address

Now, I've been using netcfg under X to configure my network. For the eth0
device, I've specifed the protocol to be dhcp, and I've given the host name to
be 'frodo'. Under the 'routing' tab, I've enabled IPV4 and that's all.

So, what's going on? Do I need additional kernel support, or perhaps some
other piece of software?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

ssh is as secure as most people need. you also should not have to export
the display as ssh can handle forwarding of X11 conections as long as
you've got an X-server running on the NT side..

I got a D-Link 220P for 20 dollars. It comes with DOS software that disables
PNP and shows you the hardware based irq and io information. Get the io, go
into linux and type:

modprobe ne io=0x***

***, the number from the program.

You're network card should work, just as it did for me.

I'm not an expert in this area but I'll give it a try. I believe
the AllowOveride AuthConfig needs to go in a <Directory> container.

ie
<Directory "/home/httpd/html/"
   AllowOveride Authconfig
</Directory>

Also, the "AuthUserFile" requires the filename as part of the
directive.

So what you're saying is that you want a configuration that lets you use
a bogus address. In that case, you're going to have to change EARTHLINK'S
sendmail.cf file; no amount of changing your own sendmail.cf will help you
do that. It is EARTHLINK'S sendmail that is rejecting your message. Every
time you send e-mail through Earthlink that has a bogus From address, the
Earthlink mailer will reject it and send it back to you.

Since you use ppp-off to terminate pppd that script must have a
kill -SIGINT `pidof pppd` or equivalent. Try changing that to
kill -SIGHUP `pidof pppd` which, according to "man pppd", closes
the serial device. Just something to try and not guaranteed.

This is a result of a curiosity about how bootpd (the bootp daemon) is
started
The Fine Manual (please read it) for bootpd(8) says that to make this thing
go, you need to include a line in /etc/inetd.conf, so that the Internet
(Super)daemon
will know how to spawn bootpd when a BOOTP request comes by. Since we can't
have every Linux box on a net attempting to serve such requests, this is not
configured
by default.

The (all-purpose) ls command will do the trick, if you ask it to be
verbose:
    $ls -l foo.*
will list details about all files (or links) named foo.{anything}. If
one of them
is a link elsewhere, you will see a line like this:
lrwxrwxrwx 1  root  root   {some date/time}  foo.bar -> /usr/X11/lib/foo.bas

Yes. In production you should not run chat with the -v option, should
not run pppd with the debug option. Also you should not run chat with a
command line string either but use
chat -f chatfile
where chatfile contains the expect/send pairs.
(otherwise a ps auxww will display everything on the chat command line,

I think you shouild really be alaising these onto the other card, but
that's probably not important.

Are you saying that it you telnet to a distant machine and then try to
traceroute one of the alias addresses it packets loops between the
ISP's router and your router?

You are sure this address shows up in ifconfig?

If you are saying something else what else?

> and my netstat -r says

That's good - some raw hard facts (well almost). You should really
use the '-n' switch as we are not privy to your /etc/hosts.
"ifconfig" output too is also needed to really make sense of this.
This you are about it the actual looping traceroute output would be
good.

Please remember that when you are asking for help you are often "too
close" to the problem. You should always avoid replaceing raw hard
facts with fuzzy cooked ones as your pre-conceptiopns may obscure the
issue.

I believe that you will need set the native Linux file permissions so

It makes no difference at all. None, zip, nada, zero. The network driver is
just code that is either dynamically loaded when it's needed (in the case of
the module) or is always part of the kernel (if compiled in). Either way,
when the code is in memory there's no difference whatsoever. Keep in mind
that the module, once loaded, won't get unloaded until it's been unused for a
period of time, and in the case of a network driver it will never get
unloaded unless you disable networking completely.

To repeat: there is no difference in performance. Since the network driver
module is probably going to be loaded continuously, there's also not much of
a space advantage in making it a module; it is however handy if you think you
might change network cards someday, since you won't have to recompile the
kernel to add a driver for the new board.

I'd suggest trying two things. Use the pppd asyncmap option to match the
one the ISP uses: <asyncmap a0000>. Use the pppd option for specifying
IP address option : <:192.168.0.1> . This is a request for pppd to
use the reserved IP address 192.168.0.1 to send data to the ISP and to
provide you your IP address. Yes, this can actually work, I've done it
with my ISPs.

Subject: Proxy/MASQ = bad FTP?
Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 02:19:11 GMT

Hi,

I'm running kernel 2.2.3 which is configured to run as a transparent
proxy and do masquerading. It's also routing traffic between the
internet and my internal network and there are no restrictions on what
can come in or go out. Eveything seems to work great EXCEPT ftp.

When I'm on a workstation on the inside network and I want to ftp out,
sometimes I will get problems displaying a directory listing of the site
I'm connected to. Other times, I can connect fine and everything
displays, but downloading is unreliable. For example, if I try to
download a file in Netscape from a site that I'm connected to on the
internet, generally what happens is the transfer will reach 99% or 100%
but will not transfer the last few bytes -- it will just hang and not
complete the transfer. But othertimes it will work fine, it seems to
vary from site to site.

Does anyone know what could be causing this to happen? Again, I'm not
rescricting any ports from coming in or going out and everything else
seems to work great.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Any info would be very much
appreciated!

You need to upgrade to a later version of SAMBA.

If you're running redhat, you also need to change some compiler switches.

have a look at the samba installation part of my homepage:

I am looking for a good graphical program to moniter my ppp stats.
I want it tell display connected, disconnected, bytes sent, etc. I
already have chat scripts and such, so I don't need anything to dial for

me, just the monitor. Anyone know of a good one out there?
Thanks,
Mark Powell
