It obviously gets in the way - that's its job!
What you'll have to do is to run a service on the Linux box that can
redirect your packets - a proxy ftp server can do it. I don't believe
that there's one freely available now (if there is, I'd like to know
about it, since we're in the process of writing our own).

I have two identical machines. They both have a Intel chip on the
motherboard (eepro100 at I/O 0xe800 and irq 10) and a Linksys ISA card
(ne at I/O 0x240 IRQ 3). They both have the same BIOS settings. They
both have the same version and drivers of Redhat (Linux V2.0.34). One of
the machines starts up fine, starts both ethernet ports and operates as
a firewall machine. The ifconfig for that machine shows:
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3584 Metric:1

TX packets:1459995 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
Interrupt:3 Base address:0x240
The second machine will not start either eth0 or eth1.
The second startup seems to go fine for the beginning including:
Setting up ISA PNPdevices
Board 1 has Identity e4 00 9f 6d 0501 22 05 07 AXE2201 Serial No
10448133 [checksum e4]
The problem seems to be a little further down:
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
Swansea University Computer Society IPX 0.34 for NET3.035
IPX Portions Copyrighted (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035
Delaying eth0 initialization
modprobe: can't locate module eth1
Delaying eth1 initialization
Starting system laoogers: syslogd klogd
As a related symptom. When I run linuxconf on the properly working
machine, the network basic configuation shows only the proper adapters
with the proper configuaration. On the bad machine, linuxconf shows the
adapter 1 data seems fine but it then goes on to adapter 2 - 7, all
wrong. When I try to edit it out the bad data and correct adapter 2 and
accept the changes and implement the changes, the basic networking
screen returns with the same bad adapters reinstalled and no indication
that I made any edits.
I don't think I have a hardware problem. Since I have one good working
machine, all I should need to do is to get the software startup to
basically match, but I am not sure what files I need to compare. I have
tried playing around with ifcfg-eth* in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
without success. Any other suggestions? Since the original build of the
software on the two machines was identical, I don't think the problem is
the kernel build or the lack of drivers. But as far as I know, it could
be anything in the startup configuration.
I will be delighted to post any files that anyone wants to see, but if
you just suggest places for me to look, I may be able to figure out the
details myself.

Hello all.
Quick question (I think).
I just got a cable modem and everything is working great (that's a 1st!)
Now the cable modem is hooked to my nic, it currently is not plugged into
my network hub. Now I was wondering, what would happen, if anything if I
were to take the network cable that is running out of the modem and into
the nic card and plugged that into my hub, and take a nic cable from the
hub and plug it into the nic?
Would this work? Would anything happen?
BTW - my network is just 2 computers. 1 is linux, other is ms windows.

you need a wins server for cross subnet WINS resolution. NetBIOS name
resolution packets can't cross subnets. Setup up a second samba box on the
other subnet as a domain master browser. or alternatively, if its a small
network just configure the LMHOSTS file on your clients. Copy the
c:\windows\lmhosts.sam to c:\windows\lmhosts and edit the file to fit your
network. There are examples and it's pretty straight forward.
Good Luck.

This does seem to be the fix to having two NICs. I have a 3com 900B-TPO
(Boomerang) for ADSL and an Acer ne2000 clone for local LAN. No matter what
boot params I tried (eth=0,0,eth1 etc), the ne2000 would be the one found at
install, and linuxconf did not provide a 3c90x driver choice. However, when
I reinstalled after taking out the ne2000 NIC, the 3com card came up and
Boomerang was one of the choices for probe. The ne2000 can be found in
linuxconf and set up afterwards.

I'm pretty new to Linux OS, and I'm trying to get dial-up Internet

I initially had Internet access via my college's in-room connection to
the Internet. Now, I've graduated, and I wanted to connect to the Net
with my local ISP. I'm using a number of different ISPs -- Compuserve,
MSN, and Netzero.
I tried to follow the directions in my "Using Linux" book. It referred
me to a program called "dip" to do dial-in, but I don't have that
program installed.
How can I get myself up and running on the Net?

The problem is that incoming connections to machines behind the firewall are
not supported by ipcahins. There is no possible way to rewite the code on
the HL server to make this work, but!.... It may be possible to write some
sort of deamon for the linux firewall that accepts packets on the HL port
(whatever it is) and redirects them to the HL server. Ipcahins cannot do
this, but i'm sure its possible because I know that Microsoft's IIS can
redirect packets from one web server to another behind a proxy server. Same
idea right???
let me know if you come with anything

Hello,
You will need to enable your samba box to act as a WINS server, so clients
on the other subnet will be able to resolve NETBIOS names to addresses.
Check the portion of smb.conf file that talks about WINS server.
Good luck!

Hi,
If I understand this correctly, you'd just like to be able to login and
reboot a machine from remote, right? This is definitely doable (although
there's no real need reboot Linux unless you're troubleshooting some heinous
problems (like I was recently :) or you're just masochistic :). All you
need to do is telnet in, su to root, and type in reboot (RedHat has that
aliased to shutdown). Also, for more options, type in "man shutdown" and
you'll see all the variations you can employ.
Good luck,
Rick.

1. The Linux homepage has HOWTO pages on setting up nfs., 1st login as user
root, edit etc/hosts to get some name res happening(add IP and hostname of
PC's involved, unless you have DNS or NIS, and change the order of
/etc/nsswitch.conf, edit /etc/exports to export some filesystems, run nfsd,
mountd , and depending what you want, an authentication daemon(probably,
rpc.pcnfsd). type exportfs -a or exportfs /filesystem, on UNIX NFS Server
type showmount -e unixNFSServer_hostname. Once you see the entries there
go to the NT box, and BTW you need an NFS client, previous message too vague.
Please give more detail.

Brand name hub and adapter. 10/100base-T for adapters and 10base-T for the
hub. Linux nor Windows has not yet reached the step to auto-configuring all
of networking products in the market. Pick the right product will save you a
lot of times. My favorites are boxed from 3Com.

I don't remember which program I tried to run. But I took Unix98

Subject: Slow Dialup Connection HELP
Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 21:41:24 -0400
The ISP I use supports V.90 and X2 at 56k
However I can only get a 28.8 connection from
RH6.0 using a Cardnal Internal 56K X2 modem.
I determined the rate of 28.8 by using minicom.
The Win32 Machine does connect at 56K to the same ISP.
The usuall way I make a connection is using the following
pppd script
#!/bin/sh
cd /root
pppd connect 'chat -f /root/erols.chat' /dev/modem 56800 0.0.0.0:
asyncmap 0 crtscts defaultroute
echo Dialing...
How can I tell without using minicom what rate I actually connect at?
Is there a parm I can set to max the connection rate??
Thanks,
Paul-

What do you mean by native? I have a 3com 900B (Boomerang) PCI NIC supplied
by the ADSL ISP. Nothing special about it - it is connected to a Cisco
modem.
