Hi,
I've got RedHat 5.1and was want to connect to the interent
with the @home modem. I can connect with a D-Link DE-528 Ethernet PCI
adaptor and TCP/IP with win95 but want to use the same connection with
Linux. My mail setup all says that it is over a lan under winblows95.
Can anyone tell me what I need to install and how to setup to run
under Linux? Thanks in advance. ttfn,
Doug

If you do it the way you drew it, you will need to add a route on each host
to the other team's network.
It proably would be simpler to have 1 linux system at on each network acting
as a gateway/firewall to the ISP and a router to the other teams network (3
interfaces). Then only the router needs to know the additional route to
the other teams network, not every host on the network.

I had a similar experience with my Cabletron E2119 card. I had to edit
conf.modules per the instructions in the Ethernet How-To in order to create an
alias for the card & to pass it the correct parameters. At least now Linux finds
the card (but unfortunately I've got something else wrong that is giving me a
Bogus Packet Size error!)

You can find this out for yourself by examining the value stored in
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
A value of 1 (made visible by cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward) means
that IP_FORWARDING
is on, a value of 0 means it is off, and a result of 'no such file' means
that you haven't installed
IP networking at all.

I compiled ssh-1.2.25 yesterday with glibc-2.1 without any problems and it
uses the Unix98 ptys now.
The only thing I had to change was to remove the HAVE_UTMPX_H entry
in config.h after configuring.

Today, A Natiional Service Provider announced it's advancement in providing a
choice of Networks for it's customers when accessing the Internet. "From this
point forward, our customers will have a choice of 4 Networks to access while
accessing the Internet", claims President, Fredrick Hoisington.
"Our experience in the industry has told us that many of the major backbone
operators such as UUNet, GTE, MegaPOP and PSINet have less congested POPs,
depending on the city which you are dialing into. This method allows us to
strategically place our customers on the least congested POP in their area,
hence providing the highest quality service."

I need to connect two pc's; one Linux and one DOS; together. So I decided on
PLIP. I compiled a new kernel with "PLIP" and "Set version info for
modules" both set to "Y". I noticed using "dmesg" that "PLIP" does not seem
to be in the kernel ( PPP, SLIP, CSLIP, TCP..... are) so I tried to load
"plip.o" using "insmod" but I get this error message:
kernel_version needed, but can't be found
What am I doing wrong ?

Or, as an alternative to IP Masq, check out http://www.socks.nec.com
for the freely downloadable public release of the SOCKS5 proxy server.
Squid will proxy web surfing okay, but won't do much, if anything
else. Socks5 proxies tcp/ip and udp generally, making for a much more
transparent security system.

Well, it wouldn't be a discussion without someone playing devil's
advocate, now would it? ;-) I spent 4 years working as a network tech at a
large state college in the Northeast. We used 3Com 3C509 cards almost
exclusively, and I have to say that after installing 300-400 cards in that
time, I can recommend them heartily. Matter of fact, we have one in our
Linux box here where I work now, and it has performed flawlessly. Just make
sure that you disable the PnP and specify what type of interface it will be
using (RJ-45, AUX, BNC, etc.), should you choose to go with that card. I do
agree wholeheartedly with the other posters that cheap "NE2000 compliant"
cards are usually not worth the silicon they are printed on. YMMV.

I assume it has something to do with a test to see whether the network
configuration supports full duplex or not. My two machines are connected
via a hub, which I understand makes full duplex impossible, so this makes
sense for my setup. I haven't checked the source code, though, and I
don't know all that much about the nitty-gritty details of ethernet, so I
could be wrong about this....

Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 20:29:37 GMT
Hi,
I recently got the D-Link 530 working - thanks to the SuSE component
Database which pointed me to the via_rhine driver.
I'm running kernel 2.0.36. I suggest you compile the module and just do a
modprobe via_rhine. Check your syslog messages and see whether it's
recognized.
I have a question though, while we're on the topic. My D-Link 530TX is
working fine but /var/log/messages is filling up with these messages - every
2 minutes:
21:11:33 kernel: eth0: Setting half-duplex based on MII #8 link partner
capability of 0000.
21:11:43 kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #8 link partner
capability of 41e1.
21:13:03 kernel: eth0: Setting half-duplex based on MII #8 link partner
capability of 0000.
21:13:13 kernel: eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #8 link partner
capability of 41e1.
BTW: An Intel Etherexpress crapped up, kept getting timeouts and I couldn't
access the machine via the net. Could the two errors be connected?!
Any suggestions?

What do you want to do when you say "access"? ...and what are the other
computers on the net? And what have you read so far? It would take a
book to go through the general topic you've stated, so you need to narrow
it down a little.
