Try adding your IP to the host file of the linux box. I had the same problem
after setting up DHCP on my linux server, after adding my IP it connected
instantly

Subject: Re: Problem with Squid 2.1 patch2: Dnsserver not starting?
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 05:59:30 GMT
Hello, I am experiencing a similar problem.
- Kernel 2.0.36
- Squid 2.1
- ipfwadm (comes loaded with my distribution)
- TurboLinux 1.0
I have a dual-homed gateway machine, which acts as my firewall to an
internal network. It performs IP Masquerading, defines filters for
incoming and outgoing packets, and is also my primary DNS server. This
is also the machine where I am running Squid.
When I bring down my firewall, i.e., ipfwadm -F -p accept, ipfwadm -I -
p accept, ipfwadm -O -p accept, ipfwadm -F -a m -p accept, then squid
fires up fine without a problem. It is only when my firewal is up
(upon starting squid) that I get the error message:
"Warning: Cannot run '/usr/bin/dnsserver' process."
If I edit the /etc/squid/squid.conf file and specify 'dns_testname -D,'
then the error message changes to "FATAL: ipcache-init: DNS name lookup
test failed."
It appears that my filter rules are correct as all my internal hosts
are able resolve hostnames through the firewall and IP masquerading
without a problem.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi All,
I want to connect two Linux box with RAD ASM-31 Modem. Since ASM-31 modem
support V.24 interface, can I connect this modem to the serial port
directly? So this Linux box can act as a router, then I needn't purchase a
router. Does it make sense? Which device driver should I use? How about its
performance? Any inputs would be appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like your ping program is not setuid. "chmod +s ping" in the
directory
where ping is should fix it.

Hi,
I just set up a firewall machine running Linux in my company. I
follow the HOWTO-firewall document and everything seems fine. I can
telnet, ftp, ping and finger through the firewall. However, when I try
to login a testing machine in protected subnet, problem occurred.
I first test the firewall by telnet to a testing machine A in the
protected subnet. Everything works prefectly. Then I try to login from
another machine, which is outside the protected network. I need to
wait or about 5-10 secs before the login prompt appear. Moreover, when
the login prompt appears, the first telnet session is dropped, even
though the shell process is still active.
I checked several documents about firewall setting but I can't
find anything related to it. Anyway, has anyone encounter similar
problem? Any suggestion is welcome.

That was the case for eth0 (and IIRC plip0) but didn't seem to be the
case for localhost (well, the route was not visible with route but did work).

How can I get more information about such attacks and how they were done?
Would I be able to contact your ISP directly or could I possibly ask you to
forward this request on to them? We might not be able to catch the person
who did this but at least we might be able to figure out a way to keep it
from happening again.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.

1. How to make a wiring closet for a home
2. How to install wall mounting jacks to avoid having Cat5 cabling
running all over the place.
3. Make crossover, and regular cables.
4. How to setup the linux box for IP-Masq and as internal gateway

It can be done. Check out the IP Masquerade resource and HOWTOs. VPN uses a
different protocol type. It's not TCP or UDP, so there's no range of ports you
need to allow. There are, as I recall, patches required to get VPN to work
through masquerade.
I played with it about a year ago, but VPN doesn't work from here with or
without masq (at least from the attempts I made). Note that VPN is now being
advertised as an @work feature and there have been various threads about VPN
NOT being allowed under @home.
Good luck!

Hi!
I'd like to use CompuServe for mobile Internet access with my
notebook. I want to use a pppconfig-created pppd/chat-script to make
the connection. Now here is the tricky part: CompuServe requires you
to have a 7-bit, 1 parity, 1 stop bit connection during logon and then
you have to change to 8 data bits no parity to establish the
ppp-connection.
Does anyone know a way how to make pppd switch on 7E1 connection
parameters before starting the init-script and switch back to 8N1
after the init-script is finished?

Subject: Two on-demand ppp links through one modem - help!
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 09:57:53 GMT
I have a question for all you guru's out there.
I currently have an on-demand dialup connection to my ISP but recently
my partner has needed a ppp dialup connection to her work's network.
Currently she does this by killing the diald process, then manually
running a ppp script to make the connection.
I know that diald cannot handle more than one dialup through the
same device, but I would like to be able to configure my machine
so that she doesn't have to kill processes.
I have looked at pppd on-demand option and I think that could fullfil
our needs, but I need someone with a bit more knowledge to point me
in the right direction.
I only have one modem and data line, and would mind having to run
a ppp-down script if the ISP link was up and the work network connection
was needed, but I really need that first push....
Please help!

I'm install two (one 10baseT the other 10base2) NICS in a RH 5.2
Linux box. I recompiled the kernel so both NICs are recognized on
boot. I can ping both cards from the Linux box they are installed in.
Problem is no other machine can see the 10base2 NIC. Tranceiver is ok
on both cards. The 10base2 card is station47B with an IP at
192.168.11.35. The 10baseT card is station47 with an IP of
192.168.11.34. I can telnet/ping to station47 but not to station47B.
I added "alias/option" lines to conf.modules and the required "append
eth0/eth1" lines to lilo.conf but no good. Do the NICs have to be on
different networks? Maybe station47B should be on 192.168.12.0 network
instead of 192.168.11.0 network. I really didn't want a router, just
a way to send files to a sever from the 10baseT portion of the WAN to
a server on the 10base2 LAN. Simple huh -- NOT!

Subject: Linux client, NT server, and callback problems...
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 1999 10:10:40 GMT
Hi All,
Has anyone successfully connected a linux machine to an NT server running RAS
*with callback* ?? (Getting the link to work without callback enabled wasn't
really a problem)
I'm running Slackware with (from memory!) kernel 2.1.103, and PPP 2.3.5.
Dial-up was working fine until I set the NT server for callback. Linux dials
in and authenticates OK, the remote server calls me back, the modem answers
fine, but then pppd sits there for about ten seconds before terminating the
link.
I get the following in the logs (with 'kdebug 7' set) repeated several times -
email me privately if ppp logs make a lot of sense to you and I can send
more details...
Apr 25 16:07:18 pukeko kernel: ppp0 released
Apr 25 16:07:18 pukeko kernel: ppp0: ccp closed
Apr 25 16:07:55 pukeko kernel: ppp: frame with bad fcs, length = 10
Apr 25 16:07:55 pukeko kernel: ppp: bad frame, count = 10
Apr 25 16:07:55 pukeko kernel: FF C0 00 21 C2 23 80 63 ...!.#.c
Apr 25 16:07:55 pukeko kernel: F1 6D .m
<repeated several times>
...
Thanks for any help - only reference I've found to the 'bad fcs' messages
indicate that it's usually when the NT server's trying to send me plain text
at the start of the call, but that doesn't look the case from the logs.
There's no default route added to my routing table at this point, so I guess
ppp's still trying to form the link.
my scripts are as follows:

#!/bin/sh
pppd /dev/ttyS2 57600 crtscts nodetach modem \
