How do I attach my Linux box to the RoadRunner cable modem? I sent a message
to them (RoadRunner support), and they did not reply. I would like to make
this my internet server for the house: there will be at least two other
computers masquerading through the box. I would like to be "cable
friendly"--only logging in when there's demand. Please email me a copy of
your reply. -Sean Walton, KB7RFA

This may be a dumb question ... but if I enable encrypted passwords in
Linux, how can I get both my Win98 and Win95 machines to log into the
network?

I'm running RH 5.2 with SAMBA 2.0

tcgetattr almost always means that there is another process besides
pppd that is contending for the modem IRQ. Some examples are (1) an
ethernet card that used the same IRQ as the modem, (2) a misconfigured
ppp script that launched pppd twice, and (3) a mingetty that somehow
had been configured for call-in. If yours is different, I would be
interested in adding to this list. :)

Fred,
This error message is in 8390.c which is targeted for
8390 based boards. Are you using the 8029 ne.c driver? How
old is the 8390 board? Is it an older design board - they had a
number
of problems? If that's the case the dual maybe too fast (lock
timing)
but I'm not sure about that. The code is showing that it got an
interrupt while interrupts were shut off. It looks like this is
leftover code from development testing and should never be
traversed
after an initial development design check was complete. But the
code
is there.
It looks like this is happening when the card is getting
probed.
Does this only happen on startup or can do you run for a while
then
trigger into this condition? The code looks like this should
happen
on startup when networking comes up. Are the interrupts set
correctly?

Much deleted, see the original post.

I have a Micron TransPort Trek. When I boot my machine I see the same thing.
Of course my D-Link DE-650 Ethernet card (suppported by the way) causes
a low beep - high beep when inserted. The configuration files are very similar
to those used on Caldera 1.2 which worked with the same machine - card
combination?!

The real trouble began early in the boot process. The OS is RH 5.2

Any ideas.

It may be sending the root password from one box to the other.

Have you tried logging in on both boxes as the same user name with the same
password?

It might need a ftpusers file with nothing in it? Or better still, use the
standard one that excludes the common system uids (<100).

Is the ftp user's uid less than 100. On many systems, ftp user is uid 14 and
used by the ftp server to gain access to files.

Make sure that your ftp user's entry in the /etc/passwd file does not have a
* in the second field. This will stop user access. eg. ftp:*:14:50:Ftp
User:/home/ftp:

Other than that, it could be a mystery :-)

Howdy folks,

I recently setup a web (and everything else) server on a dual PII box with
a DEC tulip 10/100 ethernet card. I've got it recompiled with 2.0.36
modularized. The problem is that after up and running fine for between 24
and 72 hours, it just plain stops responding to anything IP. I can't
ping, telnet, nothing. I take a look at the console and it looks fine.
no crash, nothing. I looked in syslog and found only one weird log. it
would print the message: ICMPlogd: can't connect to destination from
127.0.0.1 <local host>

this message is repeated over and over a couple hundred times.

Let me know if you have any thoughts.

Thanks!

Use Registry Editor to view the following registry key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Vxd\Vnetsup

Under this key, create a new DWORD registry key named
"EnablePlainTextPassword", set its value to 1, and then restart your
computer

That's what I did and it solved the problem. Now the question is, do I need
encrypted passwords for anything else? Anyway, thanks for the help.

Subject: Port-forwarding and dynamic ip

Hi,
Can anyone help me with a script that I'm told I need to write for
dynamic IP addresses to update my port-forwarding, IPPORTFW. My
masquerading works great, but since my IP keeps changing, I haven't
bothered dealing with incoming connections yet. I want to forward web
and FTP requests to an internal server, so I guess I need at least ports
20,21 and 80 forwarded. I could do it if I knew how to keep the IP
port-forwarder up-to-date whenever my modem redials and gets a different
IP.

Currently I use KPPP for dial-up, on Caldera OpenLinux 1.3. IPFWADM does
my masquerading - I'm just using the standard out-of-the-box kernel, and
haven't had to recompile it yet.

Any help would be much appreciated - I'm new to Linux.

You will need to disable the PnP settings of the card to have it run under
linux.
If you dont have the setup disk with the card visit the 3com site there you
will find the disk set and you'll be able to disable PnP. Any other problems

If you are using a dialer I strongly recommend ezppp. I'm sure others will

PROBLEM:
A diskless SPARCstation ELC will not boot of redhat 5.2.....

PRECISE DEFINITETION:
The tftp protocol works ok and sparc station downloads the bootimage of
linux bootparamd
without any problems...ARP, domainame calls etc are all successfull....
Eventually the Sparc Station mounts the directory off the linux server !

It then attempts to download a kernel file(486kb large)......
NFS READ TIMEOUT ERROR occurs...

Upon checking out the network traffic.....It seems that the linux box
sends the packets too
quickly for the poor sparc station...and the overrun
occurs.............Upon linux sending 5 packets
the sparc requests a retransmission of the entire block.

My feeling is that Linux NFS BLOCK_SIZE is by default set to 8192
bytes....BUT for some reason
upon sending that block to the client, the NFS_SERVER chops the block
size into 1024 b blocks!
.....Thus when the NFS server sends the 1024 byte blocks , it expects
each in turn to be acknowledged......It seems that the sparc diskless
client is not expecting 1024b blocks....It expects
the whole 8192 block....!!!! And thus does not reconstruct the block
correctly and requests a timeout.

HELP:
Am I on the right track?
What can I do....how can I force linux NFS to produce 8K block
sizes....?
btw...please remember that this problem is specifically related to
diskless sparc stations....

If you can help , it would be most appreciated....I am sick to death of
hacking and recompiling
the NFS code! This is a really bad problem!

kicking users off-line
finding amount of time a user is logged in.
sniffing packets to see what kind of traffic is going down

Also, we make heavy use of NT Terminal-server in our network. Is
there any way to admin those connections using Linux? Basically,
we have a custom app running off a dual PII Dell with 1 GB of
RAM. I can use another Terminal Server machine to admin, but
would like to know what else I can do. If you have any links,
suggestions, information sources, etc, please let me know. I
remember better if I have to read for myself, but a cook-book is
better than nothing.

Thanks.

what is the ms-chap protocol??
I already knew about PAP,,because RedHat's(5.2) netcfg tool has PAP tab..
but there isn't chap tab...
Is there any way I can connect PPP through chap-auth-protocol in "netcfg"
network tool??
or Do I need to make some scripts for chap protocol??

I use the line ,so called ,TT line(use modem), not cable modem,,
my OS is RedHat5.2..
and PPP version is 2.3.5 (perhaps??)
I read /usr/doc/ppp**/readme.
there are some statements that chap bug is fixed...
so i guessed that there must be a solution for chap problem,,,,

Please help me,,,,

I'm not sure if the ftpd on Redhat does this, but Solaris 2.5 would refuse ftp
access if the file /etc/shells exists and the user's login shell is not listed
in it (sorry, I'm a programmer ;-) Perhaps that's the problem...

Subject: onboard DSP winmodem?
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 18:20:36 -0000

Hi, I am one of those unfortunates caught up in the winmodem problem.
My PC was advertised as having a 56K voice/fax/modem On
inspection the device turned out to call it's self an LT winmodem... I
assumed
that this meant it was a host signal processing device and therefore
unlikely
ever to be supported by the LINUX crowd. So I called the guys at MESH who
had sold me my pc to ask for an exchange (no mention of winmodems in the
product description, buyer beware!).

I was interested to hear that the model I have was a:

Multiwave: Comwave 56 PCI
(Lucent Technologies chipset)
DSP (as opposed to HSP)

I was assured that all the signal procesing was done onboard, that they had
stopped shipping HSP devices.

Has anyone any experience of getting this hardware to work with linux?
Or does the winmodem label mean that the spec is kept a dark secret?

Thanks for any help,
Simon.
