ouch this is gonna be a hard one :-)
btw? why running dhcp? i hope you mean as a client.
since your NT-server is already running dhcp.

this is a prolly a reply from your linux that answers quicker than the NT
pdc :-)
this is probably caused by samba. by default, it tries to make the server
domain controller of "my group". read the smb info (man-pages, but watch out
they're BIG)
and configure samba to let the NT handle all logins. Since samba by default
does not use the nt-encrypted logon, this will only affect non-nt-boxes.
i have a pretty simular situation, an NT PDC , an NT FS, NT ws and two win
98 clients in the same net with one RH -linux. Lan -side is working
perfectly after configuring samba.
>However I do not have any problem logging in from other member server

if you eventually want the gateway to work, you'll have to consider doing
this, or you have to configure your linux with dial-out rights manually

my advice, get the smb to work first. then start working on the gateway.

Subject: Losing DHCP & NIC
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 07:25:21 -0400
My problem is that about every three days I lose my DHCP obtained IP. I
also lose the device (eth0) associated with it. By lose I mean that
when I run ifconfig, eth0 is no longer present.
My messages log has this entry:
Apr 27 05:52:17 linuxstein dhcpcd[178]: recvfrom (rcvAndCheckDhcpMsg):
Connection refused
Apr 27 06:16:05 linuxstein dhcpcd[178]: REBINDING: Lease time expired.
Fall back to INIT
Apr 27 06:17:11 linuxstein dhcpcd[178]: no DHCPOFFER messages
I am running RH 5.1 and DHCP dhcp-2.0b1pl1-2. The kernel has been
rebuilt with routing optimization. This machine connects to a cable
modem via eth0 which is a 3Com 3C509 NIC. It connects to my internal
hub via a SMC ether-16 NIC which is eth1. When this problem happens
eth1 is unaffected.
I have been tempted to set up a cron job to periodically reboot the
machine but that strikes me as advoiding something rather than fixing.
Suggestions?

You could divide it into 2x /29 (netmask 255.255.255.248) networks which is
8 IP's each forfeiting 2 IP's in each subnet for network & broadcast.
a /30 (255.255.255.252) is commonly used for PPP links and usually the
192.168.x.x range is used for private WAN PPP Links.
Elaborate more on your intended network topology and the n newsgroup readers
could render better advice.

Starting at 2.1.something, and present in all 2.2 kernels, you can
print and use the zip disk at the same time.

Yes... It's not hard to recompile the kernel, you can do it easily
following the how-tos, and so you don't have to wait until slack4.0 (what
doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it:) to have the support.

Thanks for the reply! I could do that but it's not what I really want.
The deal is, we're a newspaper and have a number of dumb terminals. They
all end up in a term server. We have several departments, circulation,
advertising, etc. and what I want is when someone in circulation hits
the return key it telnets to the circulation server. The easy way would
seem to be to just teach them to type telnet circserver but you have no
idea
how I would be punished for that with our users.

Can you grab the login name with mgetty and

I did that might give you some ideas.

FYI, I'm using external 56K modem, on ttyS1 (com2)
another queston is can the chat program be used alone for testing my modem
?
it seem do not have any option to specify which port it is connected to .
Q2
I have the HTTP, FTP and TELNET daemons running, however, the FTP
and TELNET have to wait for about 1 minute before the connectio is
established,
why will this happen ?
Thank for any advice,

Hi Rob,
Make sure your nis server is returning the hostname not the hostname and domain
name. WHERE are you putting the "short alias name" for your server?

I've got the same setup here in Omaha, NE through @home for my home connection.
I've got an olf 486 with 2 nics running IP FOrwarding/Masquerading on the 2.2.1
kernel with ipchains. I've got 2 other workstations going through this one to
get to the internet. It works flawlessly. I don't mess with DHCP, I just hard
coded my @home ip into the routing box, because it's the same everytime. My
install guy said they only do DHCP so they can change things later if they want
to. I'm curious, you're getting an @home connection at an office? I thought if
you wanted to do this at an office, they made you sign up for their @work setup
and made you pay more, buy a router, etc. They didn't mind you only wanting one
IP for a whole network?

Subject: Gateway problem?

I've installed Redhat with a network card and I can ping my own ip address
and localhost but I'm not able to ping another computer on the same subnet.
It's the same when I try to ping my ip address from another computer. When I
used the network configurator to set up the interface, the network address
was calculated automatically but it does not match the gateway ip given to
me by my network admin.
Here is the result of netstat -nr:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt
Iface
147.32.124.128 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.224 U 1500 0 0

0.0.0.0 147.32.124.129 0.0.0.0 UG 1500 0 0
eth0
The 147.32.124.128 is the value automatically calculated by the network
config. and 147...129 is the one given to me by my net admin.
Any ideas?
