In the sacred domain of uk.comp.os.linux didst Jamie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> eloquently scribe:
: They have invited Linus to set up the machine. One thing to remember
: though is that this is like inviting Bill Gates to set up an NT machine,

I doubt Gates knows ANYTHING about configuring windows. He's hardly a
programmer after all....

If the router is a cisco 2501 ... you'll need an HD60-v24 (dte) cable into
your modem.

Is your ISP using async? I use a Motorola BitSurf Pro (obsolete) with
an ancient IBM that has only 16450. I don't use async and it works.

Perhaps there are some init strings? (Windows NT driver may have those
strings.)

: asyncmap 0 escape FF kdebug 7 $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \
: netmask $NETMASK defaultroute name *** connect $DIALER_SCRIPT

The `debug' option doesn't take a parameter. The `7' may be part or all
of the problem, it will be interpreted as the speed for pppd to use. The
`38400' that comes later may not override the `7'.

The ppp negotiation messages are in another file, usually /var/log/debug
for slackware. The actual log file is configured in /etc/syslog.conf, look
for a line starting with *.=debug or something similar. "man syslog.conf"

It's remotely possible for /etc/syslog.conf to be configured so that every
byte pppd sends to the peer is logged. Check the logs in /var/log to see
how large they are and what's in them.

Some other things. Lose the `escape FF' option it can cause trouble.
Lose the `netmask $NETMASK' option, this is usually meaningless on a
PPP link. Lose the `kdebug' options, they are seldom required to debug
PPP, make reading the log files difficult, and will result in the
log file growing rapidly. BTW `kdebug 7' includes `kdebug 4', "man pppd."

: Here's a snippet from my /var/log/messages (after it goes
through all the : chat stuff and establishes the serial connection)... it
says going up for IP : packets! I would assume that all would be ok at
this point.

It's 4 distinct Ethernet interfaces, so you need an eth0: to eth3:

Subject: Re: Compaq NC3121 Problems

Good luck. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get a Compaq
Netelligent Ethernet NIC (or even a PCI Intel Ethernet Pro 100+) to
work under Linux on the Compaq machine. The problem that I have been
having is an IRQ conflict with the SCSI adapter (the BIOS setting NIC
(any NIC) to IRQ 11 and then the SCSI adapter then being set to IRQ
11). Incidentally, either NIC/SCSI combination will work under WinNT
without difficulty. Evidently, there is something in the Compaq setup
that is messing up the settings which they somehow fix under NT. I
even tried to set the IRQ for the NIC directly in a kernel parameter
to no avail. There is something seriously wrong here.

If you find an answer, please let me know.

I compiled the modules and installed them. I have still the same problem.
The ethernet card IS recognized by Linux, here is the log:

As you can see, the ethernet card is found, but the DHCPcd does not manage
to configure it. I'm going mad!

When I do 'ifup eth0' I always get "failed".

Thank you for your help!

Ooops! It looks like I lied -- there was a .rej file, I must've mistyped
the find command wrong.
/usr/src/linux/net/ipv4/Config.in.rej contains:

======= begin =========
***************
*** 16,21 ****
comment 'Protocol-specific masquerading support will be built as
modules.'
          if [ "$CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL" = "y" ]; then
            bool 'IP: ipautofw masquerading (EXPERIMENTAL)'
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPAUTOFW
          fi
          bool 'IP: ICMP masquerading' CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_ICMP
        fi
--- 16,22 ----
comment 'Protocol-specific masquerading support will be built as
modules.'
          if [ "$CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL" = "y" ]; then
            bool 'IP: ipautofw masquerading (EXPERIMENTAL)'
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPAUTOFW
+ bool 'IP: ipportfw masq support (EXPERIMENTAL)'
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPPORTFW
          fi
          bool 'IP: ICMP masquerading' CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_ICMP
        fi
....skipping...
***************
*** 16,21 ****
comment 'Protocol-specific masquerading support will be built as
modules.'
          if [ "$CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL" = "y" ]; then
            bool 'IP: ipautofw masquerading (EXPERIMENTAL)'
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPAUTOFW
          fi

          if [ "$CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL" = "y" ]; then
            bool 'IP: ipautofw masquerading (EXPERIMENTAL)'
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPAUTOFW

CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_IPPORTFW
          fi
          bool 'IP: ICMP masquerading' CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE_ICMP

========== End ==========

If I insert the new line manually, config honors it, but when compiling I
get errors about undeclared IP_PORTFW_ADD, IP_PORTFW_DEL, and
IP_PORTFW_FLUSH in ip_sockglue.c -- I do not see any other .rej files or
errors in the patch output. Now what? Should I try a virgin, non-SuSE copy
of the kernel?

I used to use one called fetchmail but had some reliability problems so I
shifted to fetchpop. They both do the same thing as getpop3 by the sounds of
it.

Subject: NT PDC and samba 2.0.3 smbpasswd problem.
Date: 29 Apr 1999 22:45:51 +0100

 Hello people.
 I've following problem:
NT PDC 4.0 SP 3 and Linux Samba 2.0.3 server (k 2.0.36 SuSE 6.0 glibc).
Before I've upgraded Samba from standard SuSE 6.0 (pl18?) I wrote
script which changes password simultaneously in Linux and NT. After
upgrade script stopped to work and the reason is following: if you
supply correct or incorrect old password

 smbpasswd -r NTSERVER -U username

replies:

machine NTSERVER rejected the password change: Error was : User has
insufficient privilege.
Failed to change password entry for username

Did I miss something about password case changes in new Samba?
