If proxy installed on localhost then you should be able access Internet
directly. Why are you trying to use proxy?

This machine will be a proxy for the rest of machines on your network, but
it needs to have direct access to the Internet or relay on another proxy
(other then localhost).

What you may want to do is to try using your actual hostname vs. localhost
(or IP address of your nic).

Good luck!

Well, the answer is very simple. You set a static IP up for your server,
and you exclude it from the DHCP pool.

Then, you set your DHCP server to serve up registered DNS names to the
workstations and everybody's happy. 'Til their workstations change DNS
names... And don't try to write any apps where the server NFS mounts files
from DHCP clients.

Microsoft has a crossover bit that runs on NT that'll link them up, but
that means letting NT hand DCHP and DNS on the same box, and that's three
things at a time for the poor NT server.

But I guess you could make the Linux box the SMB domain controller.

As somebody else pointed out, SMB domains and Internet Domains are NOT in
anyway related... Just fyi, if you knew it, didn't mean to sound gruffy.

The IP addresses that you provided kinda useless without netmasks due to the
fat that you need to know both IP address and netmask to picture your
network configuration.

Good luck!

I assume that by Linux 6.0 you mean RedHat 6.0. Have you tried issuing the
dchpcd command as root? I had to do it, so I added it to my rc.local script.
Seems to work.

Just try something similar to this:

route add default gw 1.2.3.4 dev eth0

Good luck!

I havent done this yet myself, but dont you have to tunnel in order to get
this? tunnelling ipx through ppp, i think this option in your kernel needs
to be enabled, on the kernel that you are using this option is still
experimental. If I am wrong.....well thats life, it's only an opinion.

Hello,

If your network consists of Windows machines, then you can accomplish your
task by moving DNS of Linux box to NT, installing WINS on NT and configuring
NT DNS to use WINS for addressees lookup.

Good luck!

If it's a non-standard IRQ, no. At least, not
in my experience. For example, to use
/dev/ttyS0 at 0x03f8 (irq = 5) is a 16550A (spd_vhi)

we had to use:
setserial -W /dev/ttyS0
setserial /dev/ttyS0 auto_irq skip_test autoconfig session_lockout
spd_vhi

I don't have a machine handy to test that out on, however;
the only box I have with me has an external Courier hanging
off the m/b's serial port.

I don't know what setserial -a will report prior to the port having
been properly configured... I'd be interested to hear back from
someone with a non-standard IRQ configuration, setserial -a and
setserial -bg being run both before and after running setserial
to auto_irq the port...

Hello,

You should be able to use Netscape just fine, unless your Proxy uses
MS-Authentication, which only works with IE 3.0 and higher.

AS far as using other services, then http and ftp via browser, you need to
make sure your NT is configured to do SOCKS proxy and configure your Linux
box to be a SOCKS client.

Check out MS-Proxy online docs for instruction and Linux PROXY HOWTOs on how
to setup SOCKS clients (you will only be able to use services that your
proxy supports).

Good luck!

Thanks Andrey for the reply,

I am able to access the Internet directly, but to use Junkbuster or
Squid, I need to use a proxy in Netscape, both on localhost, port 8000
for Junkbuster, port 3128 for Squid. (if I want to use both, I half to
use a forwarding proxy with Junkbuster. But for now, I'd be happy to get
one to work!)

I am not on a Network, so hopefully I am not posting in the wrong place,
but nevertheless, I am not able to make it work. I was able to when I
had RedHat5.1, but for some reason, it won't happen now. I may have
messed things up when I was playing with host names, but when I ran into
trouble, I changed the name back to the default localhost.localdomain.

Hasn't seemed to have helped, and I can't figure it out.

OK, now I've got the simplest answer that'll probably work. sorry for the
other responses,

You set up your server static IP, give it a name everybody knows. Zeus,
Godzilla, Artemis... Make it the WINS controller under SAMBA networking if
you don't already have a WINS server.

Pass out the WINS server IP with the DHCP assigned IPs, but let the Windows
95 / NT workstations keep their own unique Identifier. It doesn't matter
for Windows / SMB networking. That's what WINS is for, to figure out which
IP address goes with which SMB network name. Be sure to NOT turn on Use
DNS resolution in the WINS page on a Windows 95 box.

My opinions on DHCP is it can be more work than it is worth, but for things
like cluster server configs, it's a necessity.

In order to isolate the problem, I remove the LINUX Hard disk from my client and
install a Win95 to a new hard disk. I dial to my office (Linux PPP-server) and the
connection was fine. I can ping and telnet to every hosts on the intranet. Since the
hardware is the same, I assume the UART chipset is OK (since the connection is made
at 28.8K)

The "crtscts" is present in both side. I included the &K3 but the result was the
same.

I post the log file below. The only error message is can't locate module
ppp-compress-21,26 and 24. FYI, when I try to dial in to my ISP (they are using
Solaris), the error message also presented but I have no problem to connect to the

If you are running a 2.2.x kernel the following man pages may be useful:
packet(4), raw(4), socket(4).

Subject: ICQ IP Masquerading
Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 03:32:36 GMT

I have two systems running on my LAN: one running Red Hat 6.0 and IP
Masquerading, and the other running Win95. IP Masquerading works great
with the internet, but when I try to use ICQ on my windows machine, it
only gets as far as the linux server. None of my requests actually reach
the internet. Does anyone know how to get IP masquerading to be able to
run ICQ on a windows machine?
