Not all of us intend to be rude about it, its just that this message is
the single most common message received in any linux newsgroup, by a
factor of 2 (or more). And very few will take the trouble to make use
of their newsreader software when they first log in by having it
download the messages that exist on their newsserver by backing up the
n.progress number for the group by 200 or so. Or visit deja.news and
search for the subject. We get tired of re-typing the same answer, to
the same question repeatedly.
Cheers, Gene

Subject: Problem starting Madge token ring card
Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 03:40:20 GMT
Env: Thinkpad 760ED, 120MHz/80MB/2G, Redhat Linux 6.0.1, Madge SMART PCMCIA
token ring card with Madge written drivers v2.0, PCMCIA driver v3.0.9.
Problem: The card fails to start, giving the message: "mtok: no unused adapter
found" followed shortly by "mtok.o: device or resource busy"
I compiled the module source using the same source directory tree as the running
kernel was built from. The card has started once successfully, however it was
at 4Mbps when it should have been at 16Mbps. I altered the /etc/conf.modules
file to provide the 16Mbps flag to the driver. Now the card won't start at all.
I've rebooted several times and turned off and on the Thinkpad. Still the
problem persists so there must be a runtime file that is preventing the driver
from initializing the card. I've tried deleting the file /var/run/stab but it
doesn't fix the problem. There may be an advisory lock open somewhere that is
not being cleared by the system at reboot but I can't find one.
Anyone have an idea how I can overcome this problem (short of reinstalling)?

Looks like you want IP Masquerading... if you're using the 2.0.xx
kernel, look up ipfwadm. 2.2.x, it's ipchains.

I don't know about his setup because samba can be set up in a variety of
ways and I never used it over the firewall but in order to broadcast to
different subnet(s) over an IP router I had to a) set "domain master" to
"yes" in smb.conf, b) put the clients on the other subnet in the same
workgroup.

I've seen a few telnet questions on here, but mine seems to be a problem
that no one's seen. This is the problem:
When I try to telnet to my machine I get a connection refused message.
However when I telnet to work (from home), and then back to my machine
everything works ok.
I looked in the hosts.allow and deny files.... they're blank (asside from
some comments).
Any suggestions?

Fill them in!
I believe that the default is to allow connections, but I could easily
be wrong. Put ALL: ALL in /etc/hosts.deny, and allow your local net
in /etc/hosts.allow, and see if that works.

RH 5.2 Linux 2.0.36 (due to sloth!)
Dear all,
I am trying to remotely backup my filesystem via a Solaris 2.5 using "dump f
hostname:/dev/rmt/0n". The dump appears to work fine both from screen output and
the associated noise that comes from writing to tape. However, when restoring the
filesystem using "restore tf hostname:/dev/rmt/0n" I get
read: I/O error
tape read error: Unknown error 4294967295
Is there something I am missing or is there an incompatibility between Solaris and
LinuX? Sorry for crossposts.

Subject: IP Aliasing problem
Date: 18 May 1999 04:47:10 GMT
I'm having trouble with IP aliasing on a linux box. Just installed RedHat
6.0 on two boxes. On one, the following does what it's supposed to:
ifconfig eth0:1 x.x.x.x up
ifconfig eth0:1 down
on the other, the second statement brings down all the eth interfaces,
effectively taking the box off the network. After that, "up"s bring BOTH
interfaces back up, and "down"s bring them both down again. The only way
to get back to just eth0 is to issue "ifup eth0".
IP Aliasing is configured into the kernel, and these commands worked fine
on both boxes under RedHat 5.2 / Kernel 2.0.36. The only major difference
in the configuration is that IPX and Appletalk are compiled into the "bad"
box's kernel.
The NICS are 3c59x "Vortex" cards, both on INT 11 and mem 0x4000.
Can anyone help me figure out why? Please cc all responses to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I will post the solution when resolved if anyone is
interested.
Thanks in advance,
Tony

You need " binutils" that provides an assembler.
You can get a rpm package from : http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM
Install it and try again.

Subject: 100Mbps Ethernet trouble
Date: 18 May 1999 04:54:49 GMT
Hello.
I have two ethernet cards in my box. A generic 8029 2000NE compat 10BaseT
ethernet card connected to the DSL line and a Kingston KNE110 tulip based
100BaseT ethernet card connected to the local network serving 3 Win98
machines thru masq. Until recently, I've been using a 10Mbps hub, and
everything's been working fine.
Now, I'm trying out Fast Ethernet. I just got a generic FastEthernet card
for my Win98 machine and connected it to a 100/10 autoswitching hub. The
new hub seems to work fine for all machines except for the Linux box. All
of the Win98 machines are on the new FastE hub, and the old 10BaseT hub is
connected to the FastE hub. The linux box is hooked to the 10BaseT hub.
If I connect the linux box to the 100/10 autoswitching hub, the ping
between each local machines lose 25% of the packets, and the Win98
machines get no connection to the Internet.
The linux box and my win98 machines are the only two with FastEthernet
card, the other two are on 10BaseT. The 100/10 hub indicates that the
first two machines are connected at 100 and the latter two at 10. There's
no error indicated by the hub. I would like to just get rid of the
10BaseT hub and use just the 100/10 hub. The latter 2 machines will
probably stay at 10BaseT, but I would like to be able to use the 100BaseT
speed between the first two machines.
Oh, and yes, I am using CAT5 cables, and I've tried multiple cables. Any
help would be much appreciated. I would also prefer an
e-mail([EMAIL PROTECTED]) to this
account in addition to the reply on the newsgroup. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried newer kernel versions? 2.2.1 is pretty close to a
.0 release and it was at 2.2.9 last I heard so the first thing I
would try is updating to that. If you still have the 2.0.36 kernel
around from Red Hat 5.2 you could also try that for comparison on
speed (though I think there was a Red Hat errata needed for some
905b card of which mine was one).
I ftp between my 2.0.36 Red Hat 5.2 Linux and a Win98 box with very
nice speed so there is something in your setup.
