Well the corporate types might not like linux but the tech support people do.

If I rememebr right, congress got their exchange server swamped and it had to
be shut down upon advent of the whole impeachment crap. Check on slashdot.org
for info on it.

Also point out that NT just cannot handle the work load. There is a comparison
out there of Apache with linux and NT with IIS and Apache crumples IIS

Well, double check your gateways on either machine and set them to the same
ip as the machine they are on (mac to 192.168.1.2, etc). Double check your
linux box wityh ifconfig and make sure you have a loopback ip (127.0.0.1) and
do a route command and look at the output, make sure that you have a gateway
out for the card. Also, doublecheck your net cable. I am not sure about the
3port hub thingy, so that might be the problem...

Since IE 4 is primarily a Windows-based program (actually, according to
Bill Gates, it cannot even be extracted from Win98 :^>) it makes the
most sense to go through the trouble of rebooting into Windows to test
IE 4. Even if there was an IE 4 for Unix (which MS would not do for
obvious reasons), that would only give you an additional platform to
test on.

What distribution of Linux is the server running?
Are the LAN machines on a switch or a hub?
What is the IP address of the Server?
What is the IP address of the Laptop?
What is the Default Gateway of the Laptop?
What is the Subnet of the Laptop?

The simple answer with a pain in the ass solution is to add a static route
to all of the machines that are on the network that want to see the laptop.

The route would be to the Laptop's IP address with the Server's IP address
as the gateway and a netmask of 255.255.255.255.

The correct answer with an easier (but more technical) solution is
to enable IP Bridging on the server accross the two interfaces,
or to enable IP forwarding on the server and establish a new subnet
for the laptop and configure the routers on the network with
a route to the server for that subnet.

If you have iomega's zip tools and mark the disk as nonremovable, you can
install it to the zip disk. VB6 will still have to install files to your
<winsys> dir. This works for C++5.o so it should work for VB6

I have a Linux Firewall acting as a gateway to several PCs on my
network. The problem I am having is when I turn on the Win PCs, they
send IGMP router solicitations and activate my ppp (on demand) link.

I do have a local DNS set up on the Linux box. I have noticed that once
the first machine has been turned on, the others won't bring the link up
(perhaps because 224.0.0.2 has already been resolved and cached?).

Why are these IGMP solicitations being sent and how can I stop it?

Ummm.. if you installed redhat, it's already running. Issue the command
"ps -ax" and look for a line "sendmail: accepting connections on port
25" If it's there, your machine is waiting for email on port 25.

You could write your own code for benchmarking. When I do comaprisons for
RTOSs, these are the things I look at:

(1) Task or process switch latency
(2) Function context switch time
(3) Interrupt latency (time to start the isr after receiving the interupt)

Other than these, you could also compare the level of optimizations in the
compilers and the facilities offered by the debuggers. These are important
issues too in evaluation. Alongwith customer support and responsiveness
and knowledge of tech support :-)

Get in touch with me and I will give you pointers to some real good stuff
in RTOS benchmarking. You can use my code too. BTW, I am doing the same
thing right now - I am evaluating LynxOS for PowerPC 604e and 750.

I would be interested in knowing your results too.
Thanks !
Rohit

Subject: Redhat 5.1 as a router
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 22:24:26 -0800

I'm trying to configure a Redhat box as a simple router in a two subnet
network. I have two 3C509's on eth0 and eth1 respectively. Both cards are
loading and active. I checked 'Network Packet Forwarding (IPV4)' in the
Network config. Eth0's address is 192.168.1.1 and eth1's is 192.168.2.1.
Form a workstation on the 192.168.2 network, I can ping both interfaces, but
on a workstation on the 192.168.1 network I can only ping the default
gateway (192.168.1.1). In both cases, I can't ping past the router, i.e., I
can't ping a workstation on 192.168.1.x from 192.168.2.x. Adding static
routes at the workstation allows me to ping everything, but I don't think it
should work like this. Also why was I able to ping both interfaces on the
router from one subnet and only the nearest interface from the other?
Any insight would be appreciated.

You give virtually nothing of any use in debugging your problem.
Is your card detected by the kernel? What do you get if you do
ifconfig? Have you tried to use netcfg? Have you really read
the NET-3-HOWTO and the Network Administrators Guide?

If you want help, you've got to ask the right questions, not just whine.

That sounds like the dilbert principle in action. All systems I have run
into allow you to list multiple name servers. I would not even think about
this switching ip address theory. It sounds like a good way to regularly end
up with no name services. I would give each machine an IP address and list
both in order in the resolver configuation of win sock setup or etc.
Incidentally unless these machines are ojnly going to do dns I would give the
dns its own ip address so that in a pinch you can move it fast.

Subject: a free log analyzer for your Linux firewall
Date: Sat, 13 Feb 1999 00:54:12 -0600

Version 1.0 (ahhhhh!) of the Linux IP Firewall Log Analyzer (ipfwlog.pl) is
now available for download. This Perl script reads the /var/log/messages log
file and summarizes IP packets that were filtered (denied) via ipfwadm.

Check out the sample report and download the free Perl Script from the web
site:

Subject: fetchmail kerberos problems
Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 21:00:14 GMT

I am trying to use fetchmail to retrieve my mail from my school's kerberized
mail server. Whenever I try to check it I get a Principle unknown message.
Does anyone have experience using Kerberos IV with fetchmail who could give
me some tips on the setup. I suspect I have neglected to set something up
correctly but I have no idea what it is. I have successfully compiled
fetchmail with kerberos but I can't actually get it to work. Email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks.

Subject: checksum compile error on kernel 2.2.1 pls help!!
Date: 13 Feb 1999 03:47:33 GMT

Hi All:

I am having compile problems when I try to make my kernel. I have
upgraded all the necessary modules/tools as stated at linuxhq.com. I am
using gcc v2.7.2.3. And this is the error message i get:

when trying to compile checksum.c in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib, the
compiler/assembler complains that csum_partial_copy has already been
declared, and that there is a redefinition. I checked the file and
couldn't see any redefinition.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Please help me out!!

thanks
Partha

Just a thought..

1. Issue the command "linuxconf"

2. select "PPP/SLIP/PLIP"

3. click on the ppp link you want to edit

4. select the "networking" tab

5. click on the option "restart link when connection fails"

Maybe you've already done this.

Take care - Ed
