I am paying traffic for my RH server but there are some networks that
are cost-excluded.
So, what I need is a ipchains configuration that would count the bytes
sent to networks that are charged (some 10 networks). I tried setting up
the chains but no luck.
Is anyone out there that has some chains file doing some similar?

Here's my situation:
I have a linux machine 192.168.1.20 on eth0
running diald and masqurading for the localnet (192.168.1.n)
route table looks like:

this routing table was printed while the linux box was connected to the
internet and every machine can on the 192.168.1.x network can see it. I
recently added a second lan card on eth1 at 192.168.2.20 as you can see
above.
My second linux machine is at 192.168.2.10 on its eth0, and is the only box
currently on that side of the network (I guess linux box 1 would be
considered a router).
I can ping from linux box 2 to any 192.168.1.x machine
I can ping from any 192.168.1.x machine to 192.168.2.10 (box 2)
So both legs of my local network are doing ok.
The problem is that box 2 can not see the internet. I think it has something
to do with the routing table, but as this is my first attempt at routing, I
don't know enough to fix it. Could someone help me over this hurdle
please???

This happens once in a while in a Red Hat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36 server.
Everything is fine, suddenly the server stops transferring TCP data. It
continues to accept connections on ports that there are services
running on, but it looks like it's "mute".
That is, if you telnet to ports like http, pop etc. the connections are
actually made, but the server does not respond to data nor sends
anything.
It's also important to note that this affects all daemons, regardless
of they are run from inetd or standalone. The symptons are the same for
all of them: connection is accepted, no data is transferred.
Any hint?

On the 3c509b version you disable PnP with a command line option to the
config program. Try 3c90xcfg.exe /? or /h to see if you can get a help
screen on the command line parameters. As I recall the read me file also
had them and the parameter for disabling PnP was something like /disablepnp.

Hello,
I'm having a bit of trouble with getting a PPP connection going with
Mindspring. The odd part is, it works fine with other providers. I am
running Debian potato (the development version), using pppd 2.3.8. The
modem dials, connects, authenticates through a chat script, but it
never gets its IP and the connection hangs up after about 15 seconds.
Initially, the logfile said that the serial link was looped back, but I
resolved that problem.
Even weirder is, I have another machine running Debian potato as well,
and it works fine on there. Perhaps there is something I'm not
thinking of that I have configured on the non-working machine for
specific use on another provider that is preventing it from getting the
correct IP? What misconfiguration could possibly cause that error? I
am at a loss.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the site you are trying to connect to is using
MS-Authentication, and this means that you will not be able to use Netscape
or any other browser except IE3.01 and higher.
You can try to talk to the WebAdmin, and convince this person to change
authentication to the basic text, but I doubt that you will be successful.

I have a new Compaq 3000 w/dual P3/500s server on which I have loaded RH
6.0 (a new installation). I am using IP, samba, and netatalk to access
this server. I have a problem where I can restart the server and have
access to it for anywhere from 2 minutes to 12 hours or so. After that
time, it seems that all network communication is lost. I cannot ping
out or see any clients from the Linux server at all or vice-versa unless
I reboot it. After that, it stays up for awhile until it happens again.
I have replaced all of the cabling and the Ethernet card as well as the
switch that it is plugged into with known good equipment, but nothing
seems to take care of the problem. When I look at the interface in Net
Config, it is showing me that the interface is active. Is there
something else that I should be doing to help solve this problem? HELP!

Well, I think I got it working last night. I found something in a
dejanews search about a how screwy the PCI slots can be on the Abit
BP6 (my new motherboard). Apparently, they might not all be
busmastering capable and there's all kinds of weird IRQ sharing
issues. I moved the card around a few times and eventually got it
working with kernel drivers... still no modules.. oh well.
I didn't have a crossover cable to connect it to my other PC as I had
planned, but I'm making one as we speak and will hopefully get it up
and running tonight.. woohoo. I'll probably see if I can find a newer
3c90xcfg from 3com that will disable card PnP and maybe throw the new
2.2.11 kernel in just to confuse things. :-)

Hello. I have a question that I'm hoping someone can help

Here's the basic question in case it is something simple.

Basic Problem:
When my linux box boots up, named starts a connection to
the internet. Whenever I have named set to start at
bootup, the linux box makes a connection to the gateway
machine on my network(a win98 box with dial-up internet)
and causes a dial-on demand connection to the internet.
What is the linux box doing? It would seem to me that it
would not need to make a connection until a client makes a
dns request of it. Is there something that it is wanting to
check each time it boots?
More info:
I'm testing a linux box in the following environment:
A windows98 machine has a dial-up connection to the
internet. It acts as a gateway to the internet for other
machines on the network.
I have a linux box(redhat 5.2 with latest bind) which I
am experimenting with using as a dns server for the local
network. It is setup to be a caching server for all the
machines on the network plus as a true nameserver for
my local domain(registered with internic but not being
served on the internet by any "live" dns).
All machines are using 192.168.*.* addresses.
When the linux box boots up, it causes the win98 machine to
make a dial-on demand connection to the internet. This is
only if named is set to run at boot time.
I can not figure out why named is trying to connect to
something outside when no one has yet made a query of it.
Any ideas?

Well, to put it blunt!
with the 2.0.3 version of samba I had great performance (read as wel as
write) the problem has introduced itself with 2.0.5. So forget the
problem being on the NT side since nothing has changed there.
Since I set SO_RCVBUF=65536 and SO_SNDBUF=16384 the writeperformance to
my server has improved but still is way of the 2.0.3 result.
reading a lot of small files also sucks with this samba release and that
has also improved (but not to it's original level) by the above
mentioned settings.
and about it working fine with w2k and not with nt4? well that could
just be dumb luck knowing microsoft.

I need to connect about 60 printers which are scattered around on misc.
terminal / print servers, such as Bay Networks devices, HP JetDirect cards,
etc.
I know that I can spool these printers via /etc/printcap, but I would like
to know if I can connect them as /dev files? I am able to do this on a Data
General system using a card called a VTC (Virtual Terminal Controller). Does
anyone know of a similar method for Linux? Either a hardware or software
solution would be welcome.
The reason is that we have legacy software which is written in such a way
that spooled printing can't be used - only directly connected devices. I
think this was a security precaution to do with printing cheques.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,
For the past 2 days I've been trying to get ftp forwarding to work in
our company's network.
The configuration is such:
Firewall - runs ipmasquerading & ipmasqadm portfw.
Internal Machine with FTP server.
The firewall linux box binds to several Internet IP addresses (IP
Aliasing) and when a client FTP to one of those IPs, the ftp traffic
will be port forwarded to the internal machine's FTP server.
This configuration works well only when a Linux FTP client makes an
active connection to the ftp site. It will not work for passive mode
cos' the author for ipmasqadm told me that it is not supported yet.
Anyhow, the question is:
Why the hack Windows FTP client wouldn't be able to connect to the same
FTP server that's working for Linux FTP client?
I've tried CuteFTP, WSFTP, LeechFTP, FTPControl to no avail. These
client's allow you to setup passive connection but I'm not sure if
their default is active connection or not??? I'm saying this because
when I did a "netstat -M" on the firewall during the ftp session from
the Windows Client, there's not connection from the source ftp-data
port (20) to a high port on the firewall, which is what active
connection does.
Any tips/ideas/suggestions on how I can achieve FTP forwarding is very
much appreciated! Thanks.

I've resolved this problem now - I was using a SIOCGPGRP ioctl to set
my process to receive signals, whereas it appears I should have been
using the fcntl F_SETOWN. I am still somewhat surprised that I got no
error returned from this inappropriate ioctl (which works fine on
Solaris).
Now I'm trying to get a direct handle on the file descriptor which
caused the IO signal using the fcntl F_SETSIG and SA_SIGINFO argument
to sigaction. Alas, I get no new arguments to my signal handler -
contrary to what "man fcntl" says I should. Is it relevant that I had
to #define __USE_GNU to get at F_SETSIG.
I have read that I should use a real-time signal (>32) to make use of
SA_SIGINFO, and also that I don't need to. Neither seems to make any
difference. A similar question to last time - does anyone use
this facility? Which "gotcha" have I fallen foul of this time?

Need to use the ipmasqadm tool. Looks like you have masquarading set up
correctly but to redirect ports to internal machines you have to set up the
port forwarding.
Here's the command: ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp x.x.x.x XX -R x.x.x.x XX
The first IP address is the real Internet address and the second is the
private internal address. The XX is the port number that you would want to
forward. Works excellent.

Correction... You don't have to be logged in as root, just specify full path
to the ifconfig command:
Normally
/sbin/ifconfig -a

Hi,
My 486 is running Slackware 4.0 and acts as a firewall for the rest of my
network.
If someone from the Internet is trying to reach my network, can I see on
what port he/she is calling and what type of service he wants to reach (WWW,
FTP, etc)?
Unfortunately I'm not able to run X, so I have to use a non-graphical
utility.

I also have the same problem, except my link points to a linux partition.
I want all users with the root:
/home/ftp
to see and be able to use a link which points to:
/mount/hdd2
I am using PROftpd and cant get it working right either.

help!
my system:
suse 6.1.
internet as client works http, ftp, ...
no firewall
static IP
inetd started
all services in inetd.conf specified
host.* edited (allow ALL:ALL - very whriskey:)
/etc/services updated
all services work on localhost telnet localhost
ftp localhost etc. works
or local:
ftp IP, .... (same obviously)
as remote user just ping IP works
ftp, telnet ... IP does not work.
Error message:
glftpd runs on port 8000 -->
freelove:~ 6% ftp 212.186.195.125 8000
20 sec.....
ftp: connect: Operation timed out
ftp>
??????????
could you please help me !

What I (and also my ISP) currently see is this: Yous DNS seems to be set
correctly to DNS3 + DNS4.REGISTER.COM. At last these Servers return the
correct A-Record for your host (24.8.23.36) BUT: These Servers answer to an
MX query with: 10 mail2.siteamerica.com (and also with 6 Backup MXer I
ignore now). This resolves to 209.67.50.14 which does not seem to be your
host.
Best guess: Contact your ISP and kick their ass for not changing the
MX-record...
