you've left out some functionality - perhaps a workable xmodmap setup for
NumLock, since your version omits it.

-- also, that won't satisfy users of vt220, since the programmable function
keys aren't (DECUDK uses shifted F6-F20).

(except for the choice of PF1=Numlock, vs PF1=F1, etc, XFree86 xterm
already provides all of those control sequences w/o additional tinkering).

    This time could be taken by console messages. Kernel requires
quite some amount of time for console printing.

    For a 14.4k modem console messages come quite slowly. This
is due to slow ppp link plus internet overhead. From any other machine
in the same subnet, you get much higher speeds due to much higher
speed of direct ethernet connections.

An easy fix is to log into yer Win98 box with the proper password and access

I had the same problem when I used DHCP with my redhat 5.2 and a 2.2.x
kernel, it is because of a failure in the dhcp client, just get a new
version of dhcpcd and it will work well.

For less than 8 computers, you can buy the hub you want, the cheaper probably.

Check out 'formail' (mail reformatter).  With formail, header lines can
be renamed, replaced, appended, removed, changed, etc.

Hello,

i connected two machines via private network (192.168). One machine
installed with linux 2.2.4 is connected to an ISP with ppp via ISDN
modem.

The kernel is compiled with masquerading/forwarding switches enabled.
The masquerading is working, but i realized a delay of approx. 150ms in
ICMP pings to my ISP in comparison to a network address translation
program i run under windows.

With the windows solution i get pings with 50ms and with the linux doing
the NAT the same ping takes 200ms. The ping is done with a IP address so
i guess there are no nameserver probs involved.

What can be wrong, where to look for a misconfiguration ?

Hi everyone!

I've just recently installed Redhat 6 on a machine with the intention of
using the thing as a gateway for a small group of IP-capable machines. I am
however, having some problems with the routing part of the equation. The
basic setup is a bunch of machines with C-class IP addresses sitting behind
the Linux machine with a modem connected to an ISP. Here's what's do-able
and not-do-able.

1. All machines inside the network work without problems and are able to get
all their IP info (DNS/WINS/Gateway/IP address/subnet mask etc) through
DHCP.
2. Every machine inside the LAN can ping anything inside the network, the
gateway machine and the modem's IP address buy no further out.
3. From the Internet, only the modem's IP can be pinged.
4. Doing a tracert from any machine inside the network to the gateway
machine yields nothing.

That's about it. Any suggestions?

It should be simply the "ServerName" parameter in
"/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf" file, say it is "localhost", it will work.

I have a Slackware 3.6 box I just set up.
The first network card in the machine is eth0 192.168.0.25 mask
255.255.255.0
I added the second eth1 to 24.4.46.125 mask 255.255.248.0
ifconfig shows both ethernet addresses correctly.
I can ping localhost and 192.168.0.25 or any other address on my local
intranet. (192.168.0.?).
I have added a host entry for:
darkstar-int 192.168.0.25
darkstar-ext 24.4.46.125
ping darkstar-int works, darkstar-ext resolves to the correct 24.4.46.125
but doesn't work.
My /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 has 192.168.0.25 specified as gateway.
There are no entries in the rc.inet1 for my second eth1 card.
route shows:
localnet        *    255.255.255.0    U    0    0    0     eth0
loopback     *    255.0.0.0             U    0    0    1      lo
default         *    0.0.0.0                  U    1    0    0      eth0

The ethernet cards both load at boot with the correct IO and IRQ addresses.
I have tried to add a route:
route add 24.4.46.0 gw 192.168.0.25 netmask 255.255.255.0
and
route add 24.4.46.0 gw 192.168.0.25 netmask 255.255.248.0
both entries tell me that mask doesn't make sense.
I have no Linux/Unix background, and just installed it 2 days ago, so if you
are assuming that I did do something right, it would be better to assume
that I did not rather than did.

These documents are definitely the first reference source.

Should your linux configuration have the ethernet driver compiled as a module, 
you would add the following to modules.conf (or conf.modules).

options 3c59x debug=1 options=0 full_duplex=1

For full duplex, 10baseT (my configuration) with debug.  Use options=4 for 
100base-Tx.

The 3c509B is a Plug-n-Play card - you have two solutions that I know
of - I use the first myself, but here they both are:

1) set up the card with isapnp and then load it's support as a module.
There's an extra blurb with this though - when the 3c509B driver is
loaded as a module, it's IRQ autodetection is not reliable. You need to
specify the IRQ when you load the module. There's something about this
in the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/networking directory.

2) download a set of utility disks for this card from 3Com. There's a
program that can disable PnP on the card and set it to an available IRQ
and address. Then you can compile support for the card in the kernel,
and it should work fine (apparently the autodetection only has problems
as a module).

I'm pulling at straws here, and you might already be doing this, but. .

must be something like (assuming /etc/exports is set up):
mount server:/mydirectory /mnt

I've seen people miss the "mydirectory", thinking that whatever is
called out in the /etc/exports file shows up automaticly if they
mount server:/
