I recently setup a new RedHat 6.0 installation, and have noticed that I get alot
of core dumps when using linuxconf as well. I have found KDE to be more stable
than Gnome, but I am more familiar with KDE so it would be unfair to compare them
apples to apples.

I have a Motorola BitSurfr Pro on my Linux box. Is it at all possible to
reconnect the second B channel after it is dropped without bringing the
whole TA offline and dialing the while thing again? Someone told me that
was a function of ipppd, can I use ipppd with an external ISDN TA?
Thanks for the Help.

I've had no problems with autofs. Make sure you have
CONFIG_AUTOFS_FS=m
in your /usr/src/linux/.config file and rebuild your kernel. (Do not compile
it into the kernel. Make it a module and make sure to install your modules
in /lib/modules (i.e., "make modules_install")). Older Linux "make xconfig"s
did not allow you to select this so you may have to add it manually. Rebuild
kernel. After rebooting, try
automount /dir map
(see the autofs script in /etc/rc.d/init.d). If you didn't compile it in the
kernel and you try this command, you will see errors in /var/log/messages.

Can sendmail deliver the mail from a domain outside the home domain
without

For instance if I wanted sendmail in domain abc.com to deliver the mail
from
def.com could I put something like *.def.com in sendmail.cw ?

Remove the board, and take a look at /proc/ioports to see what already has

Which suggests that the machine you are trying to telnet to has tcp

RELAY_DOMAIN('def.com')
in the .mc file, or in /etc/mail/relay-domains (or wherever that is set
to.)
You may need FEATURE('relay_entire_domain') but I don't think so.

There's a version of Lynx that supports SSL. I'm not positive it provides
128 bits but very likely it does as it's using international crypto libs
that don't have to bend over for the U.S. export laws. They probably do
*more* than 128 bits in some circumstances (if that's possible under the
SSL spec).
Drop by http://www.replay.com/ (they're currently recovering from a disk
crash, tho).
NB: Some sites, particularly banking sites, may accept the encryption but
then bounce you because they "can't identify the browser" or because "your
browser is not on our approved list". I find I need to keep a copy of
Navigator around for this reason...

This suggests that your copy of Sendmail believes that it is not
supposed to accept mail for your domain. That is, it doesn't know which
domain it is in. (Class w or something.)
>I guess I'm looking for how to turn off the relay filter and allow all

You're probably missing either a sendmail.cw file with your domain name
in it, like
localhost
my.domain.com
Which would say "accept mail destined for localhost or my.domain.com".
Or, if you've not set up Sendmail to use the cw file, you would need
something in the sendmail.cf file like -
Cwmy.domain.com
It should appear near the "local info" bit. Probably better just to
redo the .mc file including the lines
define(`confCW_FILE', ` /etc/mail/sendmail.cw')dnl
and
FEATURE(use_cw_file)
Then you can put all your accept domains into the .cw file. (Note
that's for incoming, not outgoing relay.)

Folks, here's a bugger:
A week back, my ppp connection was still perfect until recently
when I heard from a friend that my ISP was undergoing some
system upgrade and the reason at times I can't make a connection.
Just last night when the connection was back and my nightmare
started. I tried to dial my ISP as usual via my kppp and everything
seems to
be okay except that when I check the details of my kppp, the remote
IP address (ISP) is okay but the local address set, is my own IP
address I assigned for my hostname. This really baffles me. How come?
// this is my /etc/hosts file: //
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.53.1 wildfire.yibal wildfire
// this is the message from my /var/log/messages //
May 19 05:55:34 wildfire pppd[863]: local IP address 192.168.53.1
May 19 05:55:34 wildfire pppd[863]: remote IP address 212.72.1.2
May 19 05:55:42 wildfire pppd[863]: Terminating on signal 15.
May 19 05:55:42 wildfire pppd[863]: Connection terminated.
As you can see from above 212.72.1.2 is my ISP's IP address.
I can't do any Interneting at all with these.
Now, I tried to experiment with putting a comment on the line ...
# 192.168.53.1 wildfire.yibal wildfire
in my /etc/hosts to disable this temporarily.
When I reconnected and my log looked like these;
May 19 18:46:35 wildfire pppd[1076]: pppd 2.3.5 started by buddy, uid
500
May 19 18:46:35 wildfire pppd[1076]: Using interface ppp0
May 19 18:46:35 wildfire pppd[1076]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
May 19 18:46:44 wildfire pppd[1076]: Remote message:
May 19 18:46:45 wildfire kernel: PPP BSD Compression module registered
May 19 18:46:45 wildfire kernel: PPP Deflate Compression module
registered
May 19 18:46:48 wildfire pppd[1076]: local IP address 212.72.2.80
May 19 18:46:48 wildfire pppd[1076]: remote IP address 212.72.1.1
See! I can be assigned a local IP address from my ISP and my Internet
connection is back to normal.
My problem now is that my /etc/hosts file is altered and it also
cripples my Samba stuff. Is there a remedy for this small problem?
Do I have to make changes to my /etc/ppp/options file now that
I suspect that it has to do with my ISP's upgrade.
So many thanks in advance.

Subject: File Corruption Problems
Date: Thu, 20 May 1999 11:08:40 GMT
Hello everyone,
We installed a samba server on a customer's existing network
to act as a file server and mail server. It's Samba 2.0.3
running on Linux RedHat 5.1. Samba was built with -DTCP_NODELAY and
-DUSE_MMAP options. The samba server is not set up as a PDC.
Hardware is Celeron 300, 32 Mb RAM, generic NE2000 ISA eth. Internet
connection is through a separate linux firewall box. It's all connected
with 10BaseT UTP with no runs longer than about 50 m. The hubs are
located in a wiring closet with the telephone PBX. The existing network
is a Windows workgroup with NT Workstation boxes and Win95 boxes. There
is also a SCO Unix server in this mix.
Here is the problem: on some machines, but not all of them,
and not all of the time, they are getting files corrupted when
saving to the samba server share (mostly from Excel 97 and
Wordperfect 7 & 8). It does not happen all the time and it
does not happen with all machines. When it does happen, it's
on the same boxes, but not all at the same time.
Windows 95 clients are more likely to be affected (they get an
"Abort, Retry, Fail cannot read disk ?" error ... retry doesn't allow
a resume) than Windows NT clients (which simply get file transfer
errors and corrupt the file). We could get about 5 NT clients running
a copy-to-the-server-and-get-it-back-and-compare-to-the-original test,
but only around 3 Windows 95 clients. Problem is much worse
(occurs earlier) if Samba debug level > 2.
We don't know if this is a Samba problem, a TCP problem, or a
network-busy problem. There were no problems running tests from 20 PCs
against two NT workstations, with the samba disconnected.
We've read (on
http://www.germanynet.de/teilnehmer/101/69082/samba.html#4.3)
that /etc/hosts should be set up with the localhost entry as line 1
and the local PCs entry as line 2. This was *not* the case (local
PCs entry was down around line 20) and we have rearranged the
/etc/hosts file as well as removed about 20 lines of comments.
Also added SO_SNDBUF=4096 and SO_RCVBUF=4096
parameters. Haven't had a change to try the test again, since
these changes were made.
Also, there is no lmhosts file on the Samba server - would it help?
TIA for any suggetstions,
Jim
