hi,

How can two drivers communicate between each other in Linux?
Does Linux support some sort of Inter Driver Communication (IDC) ???

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

thanx,

Okay, your own IP in the route table is represented by 127.0.0.1, but
you need to add a route to your gateway like this: >route add default gw
129.118.195.254<. If your gateway has a route to 129.118.195.72, you
should be able to ping it, too. Give it a try and post the >tcpdump -i
eth0< while pinging if it doesn't work.

BTW, Linux and Win98 are on the same machine, I suppose?

Subject: Networking and Kernel problem

The following problem seems to be some kind of networking/kernel problem.

I have RH5.2 on two different PCs with the same PCI ethernet card (intel)
running perfectly using eepro100 loadable module.

The first computer has all IDEs, and also win95 besides RH5.2.
The second which is scsi, has had win95 and now NT running, besides RH5.2.

>From the second computer which now has NT also installed, I took out the
card, and then put it back. There was some change of system resources in
the plug and play, ie reassignment as a result.

Win95 had to be reinstalled for other reasons and then NT was put on top
of it. When win95 was installed it overwrote lilo. I did not make a rescue
floppy when 5.2 was installed on the second computer. So I tried to boot
and mount root using the install floppy, which would not mount root as it
was scsi disk. So a hack was done. An image copy of the install floppy was
made, and the system was booted from another scsi with 2 years old linux
kernel from a slackware installation. The initrd from the non-booting scsi
system was then copied onto the copy of the image of install floppy and
the system rebooted using the new install floppy with the following
commandline argument

vmlinuz single root=/dev/sda1 initrd=initrd.img

It booted and mounted the root and lilo was run to fix the problem. Good
enough.

Now the problem is that the ethernet card does not run. There is no reason
that it should not, since nothing was changed on the system other than
this hack on the install floppy to mount the root and lilo.conf was
changed to accomodate the new 95 partition. The hardware is good as
swapping with the other computer confirms.

I have tried the following investigations and diagnosis to see if modules
load correctl.

lsmod shows that the module is not loaded.

If I load using

        insmod eepro100

still pinging does not work, not even pinging to itself using the ip
address.

Note that the card _is_ properly probed as the file

        /proc/pci

would show the irq, card and so on, consistent with the boot bios messages
about the PCI/PNP IRQS and Win95/NT system manager entries. But during
boot dmesg does not show any probing info while the other computer does.

Please help!!!!

Hi, I would like to set up my linux machines to support shadow over NIS. I
read the shadow and nis howtos. ypcat password and shodow.byname are working
on the client machine. I looked at the debug when client login. It seems
the login program does not ask for shadow.byname. Can someone give me detail
info to set it up.

I used to print very successfully to a JetDirect on the network, until one
day somthing went wrong at the printer and it went offline.

I fixed the problem but as far as lpd is concerned it stays down (I can
print from other machines to the same JetDirect.

lpq output is as follows:

=============================================
Rank Owner Job Files Total Size
1st root 13 (standard input) 16000 bytes

connection to 155.237.50.66 is down
=============================================

printcap look as follows:

=============================================
lp|dj:\
        :lp=/dev/null:sh:\
        :sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj-890c:\
        :rm=remote_printer_name:rp=text:\
        :lf=/var/spool/lpd/dj-890c/log:

I have killed and restarted the the daemon. even bounced the box. I can ping
and telnet to the printer, and I said I can print to it from any other
machine!!!!

Subject: slow networking one way.. what's this mean?
Date: 15 Feb 1999 08:39:31 GMT

I'm having an unusual problem with my network setup. I have two computers,
a 386 (Hurricane) and a Pentium (tornado) both running Linux- redhat 5.2,
kernel 2.2.1.
I can telnet from the pentium to the 386 just fine, but when I try to go
from the 386 to the pentium, it's very slow. It takes about a minute for
the login prompt to appear. after I'm logged in, everything works as it
should, except whenI run 'who' to list the users on the pentium. 'who'
lists the local users just fine, but stalls for a minute or so when it's
about to display the remote users.
Any ideas why it would be so slow on the pentium, and fast on the 386? I
think I've checked all the files in /etc on both machines, and they're
almost identical. The pentium isn't doing much while i'm waiting for the
login prompt, either... it just stalls. On the 386, the hard drive makes
a few accesses, and there's the prompt.
Any suggestions? This one's got me stumped.

It think all major distributions include all sources to all utilites except
for a few utilities whose license prohibits this. For example on redhat
the syslogd is in the sysklogd-1.3-22 package The corresponding source
is located in sysklogd-1.3-22.src.rpm found on the second CD of the redhat
CD set in the SRPMS directory. Other distributions do this differently.

If you are talking RedHat it is '/sbin/ifup ppp0' (or /sbin/ifdown ppp0),
and in X try 'usernet &'.

Since I assume that the route command is failing based on your message
above check the url:

http://www.uwsg.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/9612.3/0136.html

The page even has a complete rc.inet1 example that sets the loopback and a
eth interface (for slackware; I'm sure there's a comparable file on redhat
I just don't know where it is). Also, read the NET-3 HOWTO and make sure
your files are set up properly.

I just moved from 2.0.34 to 2.2.1 and had the same small problem.

If it's not on one of your cds set then just search the web using the name
of the utility. there are mirrors all over. a single search should get you

I know. But the question is how can I do proxyarp with plip. With ppp is easy
because 'proxyarp' is just an option of the daemon but with plip there is not
daemon and there is not options (I think). I would like do something like
'proxyarp' but manually. I don't know how but I want to.

I know. But the question is how can I do proxyarp with plip. With ppp is easy
because 'proxyarp' is just an option of the daemon but with plip there is not
daemon and there is not options (I think). I would like do something like
'proxyarp' but manually. I don't know how but I want to.

Make sure messages is user and group root and chmod 600 messages. Then if
the statement below does not work, try rebooting (shutdown -r now).

It's like,...if you..erm...dammit, I'm too stupid to use this Netscape
messenger properly and now everybody knows it! Maybe I should have used
Dejanews for posting, so I could at least blame them for any weird
results.

Which is the difference between pop3 and imap protocol?
Now I'm using the in.pop3d server... is it a good server?

It may be better to have a small Dos partition to facilitate moving
documents between the OS's.
If you need to that is.
