- All,
- I have the following case to solve:
------internet
------dmz=server1_with_sendmail (gateway sendmail)
------firewall=server2_with_ipfwadm_and_squid
------intranet=server3_with_sendmail (relay mail)
I can't send my messages from server3 to server 1 using ipfwadm !
- How is the best way to solve this with security ?
- Can I use ipfwadm or I need something more ?
- Thanks,

Hmmm ... and SO '3.1' - there's a 3.1?
Seriously, Tony - I'm hoping this is a typo! If not puleeeez gor to
www.stardivision.com and get the latest binary package. It also looks like you
should use a Linux distribution with RPM (I suggest RedHat Linux 6.0) if you
don't want to have to trace down these kind of dependencies. I'm lazy as hell
when it comes to that kind of stuff myself, which is why I use RHL.
BTW ~ StarOffice 5.0 comes with RHL 6.0 and is working just peachy for me so far
... I use my Win98 machine less and less ...

Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 19:46:28 -0400
I am using SuSe Linux 6.1 and just switched over from RH5.1 to this and
now I cannot seem to find a config tool to setup my computer for a DHCP
server. It asked me in setup for my hostname and domain name and I just
put something in but never gave me an option for DHCP access. Does
anyone know something about the Suse OS? or any other ideas please.
thanks in advance

Nope - I don't have default-asyncmap anywhere in my PPP options files
(/etc/ppp/options & /etc/ppp/peers/provider, I believe). I have also
tried various other things, but I just get lots of asyncmap things (I'm
not very technical with PPP) when I choose PAP authentication:
>rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x50 <asyncmap 0xa0000> <auth pap> <magic 0x2894470d> <pcomp>
><accomp>]

All of that's then repeated lots of times (apparently indefinitely).
With normal chatscript authentication, I get things like:

Nope. I must've had PPP compiled into the kernel at that time (CCP
compressors apparently only work as a module). Note that modules make no
difference to anything.

Chat scripts, PAP, CHAP, nothing changes -- either I eventually get an
IP and can't do anything while connected, or it just appears to loop (as
in my first ppp.log output above).

Again, default-asyncmap isn't anywhere in my config files. If I knew how
to grep every file on my system for it then I would (manpages are so
cryptic sometimes).
If posting my entire ppp.log file (or putting it on my web space) would
be of use, then I'll do that.
Thanks for the detailed observations, btw. Much appreciated.
Bye,

Seems like the suse 61 is using the ipchains in their firewall activity.
It is the new trend, so don't blame them for the change.
The great introduction to the "ipchains" is at
http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/usr/doc/HOWTO/other-formats/html/IPCHAINS-HOWTO.html
You have to make your kernel be aware of the ipchains. For the 2.0.34+ kernels
you have to install a proper kernel patch and activate the options:
CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y
CONFIG_FIREWALL=y
CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL=y
CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL_CHAINS=y
Then your kernel can talk to the ipchains protocol.

I am running two Debian/2.0.35 Linux systems, connected via a hub
to the tci@home (so, it my be not exactly what you may get at rogers@home).
One has an ISA nic card HP27247, and another has a PCI J2585B (also HP).
Both work without ANY problems -- so I would give them a maximal score.
Before the HP27247 I had the 3c509B card: this one worked great under NT
not not at all under Linux. Some people have this card working fine on their
systems, but reading the News discussions I would conclude that there are
serious problems with this card support.

I am very confused here: you have a Cablemodem connections but are
trying to use the ppp protocol to communicate ?
The Cablemodem provides the Ethernet-like interface, so you do not need
the ppp0 only the eth0 protocols.
Another confusion: you say that the "3com 3c900B modem seems to be recognized".
The 3c90xB is an Ethernet card and not a modem. You are supposed to connect
this card to your cable modem, configure your network (IP address, routing
etc) and use your eth0 interface to communicate (with ftp, telnet, http, etc).
BTW, your IP address on the eth0 interface, 10.0.0.1, cannot be right
to communicate via the cable modem.

Subject: IP-MASQUERADE results in permanent dialin
Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 03:12:02 +0200
We have a 3-box local network. One computer acts as local file and
print Linux-server and is connected to the Internet via ISDN. Squid is
running on the server. HTTP and FTP from the Non-Sever-boxes (running
WIN95 and/or Linux)
is going fine via Netscape and squid, but POP3-accounts are
unaccessible.
So we have tried to enable internet-access through IP-Masquerading,
following the
steps in the IP-Masquerading-HOWTO (the server is running Suse-Linux 6.1
with
a 2.2.5 kernel). After a little bit of trial and error, everything is
running as expected,
but the server is trying to dial in now nearly every minute, which is
not that fortunate
for our telephone-bill (where every call charges at least 0,12DM).
Some futile attempts so far:
- shutting down Samba
- shutting down sendmail
Anybody with any ideas?
Here's some data about our setup:

Subject: Help for sample gated (OSPF) configuration
Date: 23 May 1999 20:51:26 -0400
Hello:
I need a sample configuration file for gated. I would like to use only OSPF
protocol. I have already checked www.gated.org and did not find sample
configuration file .
If you send me sample configuration, I will really appreciate.
is there any documentation for gated other than www.gated.org?
Thanks.

Subject: Re: Slow PPP connection with RH 6.0
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 21:30:23 -0700
Eric/Rand,
I've just spent six hours doing the same thing, except I've tried both gnome and
netcfg, with a different problem. I manage to connect (quickly), get the
various message (by watching tail -f /var/log/messages), and watch the modem
hang-up about 10 seconds after the "Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0" message.
Very frustrating.
I use RH 5.2 and 6.0 extensively in the office for Ethernet Internet access via
a Firewall proxy server with no issues. The PC I'm using is a standalone one
for home development.
Any advice would be welcome. I'll watch to see who responds to your notes.

Subject: Samba and Win98 passworkd problem
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 19:41:23 -0500
I finally got the Samba server working and now I can access the Win
machines from the Linux box and the Linux box from the windows machines.
Public directories are accessible from the Win98 machines.
My only problem is when I try to access the home directories. Windows
will ask for a password and when I type it in it complains. I tried the
encrypted password option in Samba and later the plain text password fix
in Win98, but neither one of the worked. Any ideas?

Subject: Intel Etherexpress Pro 10+/eepro
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 21:43:05 -0400
I just did a clean install of Redhat 6.0 on a Pentium 90.
For some reason, my Intel Etherexpress Pro/10+ (ISA) network card isn't
being detected.
I also tried adding an append ="ether=11,0x230,0,0,eth0" to lilo.conf
and ran lilo.
I also tried recompiling the kernel w/ eepro compiled in (not as a
module).
The IRQ and the IO port are free.
ifconfig doesn't show eth0 and doing an
ifconfig -add for the card locks up the machine.
Any suggestions?
