In our department we had the same problem with RH6, but we finally fixed it.
Heres our suggestion:
1) get the kernel source for a kernel in [2.2.7, 2.2.10] (see 5)
2) install it in /usr/src
3) get the source for the newest knfsd-package
(ftp://ftp.varesearch.com/pub/support/hjl/knfsd/)
4) install it in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
5) apply the patches provided from the new knfsd-package as described
in one of the READMEs
(thats why you should notice 1, should work automatically with
those kernels)
6) compile the kernel with support for the kernel-nfs (still
experimental option)
7) compile the knfsd-sources, and make install (forget about their
warning not to use "make install")
(then you have a new rpc.mountd ........and a showmount program)
8) edit nfs-script in /etc/rc.d/init.d
define: RPCMOUNTD_OPTS="--no-nfs-version 3"
and add it to the call of the rpc.mountd in the start section of
the script => RPC.MOUNTD $RPCMOUNTD_OPTS
9) reboot your engine (maybe nfs restart is enough)
10) then it should work (also with Solaris requests)
11) keep track of new knfsd-features like support for NFS3, NIS-groups
etc.
Good luck

1) try to figure out, whether the gcc-package is installed on your machine
rpm -qa | grep gcc
2) it seems that gcc-packages are not shiped with RH6,
you can find them on the RH6-mirrors under "contrib"
3) try making a "real" boot disk for linux,
under RH6: mkbootdisk --device <floppy device> <kernel-version>
e.g.: mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.2.7
Good luck!

No, I'm not using WINS name resolution.
In fact, for the time being the netowork is small enough to use LMHOSTS...
Any more help is more than welcome, Andrei.

We have the same problem as well.
We discovered:
If you are using the kernel-nfsd (knfsd) (RH6s default) , it seems
that knfsd doesnt support NIS groups in
the exports file yet. In version 1.4.6 its still in the TODO list
(and it definitely doesnt work).
Keep track of the newest version
(http://www.CSUA.Berkeley.EDU/~gam3/knfsd/).
Good luck.

Check out http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Cable-Modem.html
This should get you started, as well as point you to a linux client (assuming
linux will be the one connected to the cable modem). Don't forget to tighten
your security.

Subject: Celebris can't see outside world via ethernet
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 11:37:43 -0400
Greetings all. I have been attempting to get Linux up and running
on a PC I have. (I started with RH 4.2, then 5.1, and now 6.0.)
For the most part, it has all gone well. However, in every case
I haven't been able to get the network card to respond to the
outside world. I have usually been able to get local loopback to
work.
The configuration is a Digital (now Compaq) Celebris GL-2. This
is a 233MHz Pentium II machine with 128 Mb RAM and an on-board
ethernet interface (using the 21143, a.k.a. tulip chip.) This
PC runs Windows 98/NT/W2K without any network problems. (I have
set it up as a multi-boot system.)
I expect it is something fairly simple I have (or have not) done
which is preventing it from working.
One suggestion made was to force the use of twisted-pair (10BaseT)
rather than the autodetect. (I currently use twisted-pair for
everything.)
Below are extracts from /var/messages using various options in

Thanks to all the help people have given me so far. The last thing
that I am having trouble with is my ISDN connection. I have recompiled
the kernel/modules to include support for the USR Internal ISDN adapter
(HiSax). Now, whenever i try to run a modprobe it gives me a device
busy error. It is an ISA ISDN adapter, which is (I believe) non-plug
and pray. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really would like
to get off of NT altogether, and this step is necessary for me to do
so. I have successfully installed Linux on many other platforms, with
various adapters, but ISDN still is a mystery to me.

needs a different gateway, else it doesn't work period. Problem is, then
telnet, icq etc die on the modem connection. Only stuff like Netscape

I just installed ssh2 also. From what i understand, you don't need to install
ssh 1.2.27 at all. ssh2.0.13 should handle both ssh and ssh2 protocalls.
just a quick guess.
hope it helps tho!

Following up my own post:
The problem described below occurs on a Pentium II system.
I also compiled ssh1 and ssh2 (same versions) on a plain Pentium box.
The plain Pentium box has no problem with ssh(d)2 or ssh(d)1.
Everything works on the plain Pentium.
The 2.2.5-22 kernels for the two boxes were compiled with the same networking
options. The only relevant (?) differences are (1) i686 vs i386 compiles, and
(2) SMC vs 3COM hardware.
Has anyone ever seen something like this?
TIA,
Kyle

I've seen already several mails in the net stating the same problem, but no

I use the kernel v2.2.10, eepro100 v1.08, I tried multicast_filter_limit=3

Does anyone have a solution for this?

I made this posting in a hurry just before finishing my nightshift, and
ofcourse as rather new to Linux, didn't think of looking in
/log/messages.
The fault was in the suse ppp-up script, I had to add /dev/ttyS1 in the
pppd invocation to redirect the chat script from the terminal to the
modem.
Happy now, but I am told I have mail each time I log as root, but pine
shows nothing in inbox. Also the modem starts up after I log in,
presumably by diald for some reason.

** The Internal Web server's default gateway is
the firewall at 192.168.1.20
** IPCHAINS is running on the firewall
successfully. It's succesfully MASQing all
traffic from the inside to the outside. All other
traffic is blocked by setting the FORWARD chain to
default to DENY.
** I used IPMASQADM on the firewall to portforward
outside traffic from x.x.10.108 (the aliased
firewall IP) to 192.168.1.15 on ports 21, 23, and
80.
** I can Telnet and FTP from the internet to the
Internal Web server successfully (I know it's a
security risk -- I just need to do this for a
couple of weeks). So I guess IPMASQADM's working.
** I can also browse the Internal Web server from
the Internet via the main index.html page or any
other page DIRECTLY under the
/usr/local/apache/htdocs document directory BUT
...
The problem:
If I try to browse an HTML document on the
Internal Web Server in a directory below /htdocs,
for example,
/usr/local/apache/htdocs/august/report.html (using
a RELATIVE link), the page is not served up and in
the browser's status window I see something like:
"Cannot find server BUCKET.INSIDEDOMAIN.COM
(192.168.1.15)" Again, I'm using a RELATIVE link
and not referencing BUCKET or the .1.15 address at
all in the link, but that info is showing up
during a browse from the outside and the page is
not being served up.
Any ideas/solutions/commisserations would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Randy

You may want to purchase the Samba book then.
