Nothing happens on my wepage. If I try to run the script by itself, by
going to the browser and typing http://url/cgi-bin/hello.pl I get
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable
to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, root and inform them of the time
the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused
the error.

Subject: Unwanted DNS lookup
Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 12:40:09 +0200
Dear reader,
At the moment I got a small network here at our company with some Win9x
machine's, and a Linux machine. One of the win95 machines runs Wingate and
has an internal ISDN modem that allows other machines to use the internet.
Now I want to replace the Win95 proxy server with a good and secure Linux
proxy server, but because the ISDN modem we've got is supported under Linux,
I'm first configuring the Linux machine as a mail server.
At the moment the Linux machine runs oke, but I got two problems. When I
send an internal mail, let's say to [EMAIL PROTECTED], everything goes oke,
except that the proxy server is asked for a DNS lookup. This is something I
don't want because for a DNS lookup the proxy server makes a connection to
our ISP. How can I fix this problem?
The second problem is that mails to outside the domain aren't delivered.
Any suggestions why and how this can be fixed.
Thanks in advance,
Tim Blommerde

Try adding this to your /etc/ppp/options file
idle <n> where n is the number of seconds you allow the connection
to sit idle.

Hi,
I recently upgraded from Samba 1.9.18.x to 2.0.3.x and now I get this weird
prompt when doing a smbmount to the Win98-box.
What's with this prompt? What can I do there?

What am I missing?!

Another thing to do is look for a /root/.bash_profile or a
/root/.bash_login file, because either of them will be read in
preference to /root/.profile when root logs in.
It is also possible that no login profile is being read for
root, if root is being accessed by using su from another
account.

I'm not sure what type and version of linux you are running, but there
are basically two options. One is using the demand feature of pppd.
This might require some kernel patching and I'm not sure what all
else.
The other option is using diald. I use diald. It was kind of a pain
to set up. I use redhat, but I couldn't find diald available as an
rpm, so I had to download the source code to version 0.16 and then
patch it to 0.16.5 and then make and install it, and then figure out
all the options neccessary to make everything play nicely. But now it
works. And it's very configureable. You can even set an option that
will execute a script everytime the interface comes up. ( I use this
to email me my ip address so I can telnet in, if I want, from work)
You can also force it to be up or down at certain times.
If you decide to do diald, and I guess I would reccommend it, then let
me offer the following advice. Don't waste too much time looking for
information on diald. The best source of information is the man
page, and the easiest way to get it is to install diald. Don't
actually run it until you have read things over. Also, make sure you
clearly understand all the options that are neccessary to set up your
ppp connection. Make sure you can set it up just by using pppd, and
not ifup. You will want to write down all the command line and or
file options you use. When you install diald, many of those options
will no longer be neccessary, or even allowed for ppp, since diald
takes over the functionality of those options. Those options will be
sent instead to diald. These are well documented in the diald man
page.
Good luck! Don't hesitate to post questions if you feel stuck!

GW

The reason you are not getting help is that it is very difficult to
understand what you are asking by reading your post. You are going to
have to provide a lot more information in a much more organized
fashion.
What kind of machines (what OS) are involved in this problem? How are
they connected to each other and to the internet. What are you trying
to do with the machines? What do you know works, and what do you
think doesn't work, and why? Try to put yourself in the place of
someone reading your post. Would you be able to figure out what it is
all about? (right now the answer is no.)
This is not a flame. Please take it as constructive criticism.

Read that link again. The actual MSN Game Zone uses the 2nd set of ports
listed on the MS site. The first set is for direct play, I haven't tried
that yet. I'm sure I could write a simple script to forward those ports,
however I haven't tried it since I want to be able to have several machines
playing online at the same time. I don't know of a way to set it up so that
I can have multiple machines but I'm sure that somehow it can be done. For
the time being I'm just going to work on getting one machine connected.
I'll fool around with it some more tommorrow, and if I'm able to get it work
you can count on seeing a post on how I did it and a copy of the script.

I have a windows machine masquerading behind a linux machine, and I
have no problems with any type of internet stuff for the windows
machine. (I can ftp, telnet, http, and so on) But because
masquerading changes port numbers, I could imagine that you might
encounter some problems connecting for some services to some machines
with tight security. You could always telnet in to the linux box and
run the connection from there, if neccessary, and that should take
care of it.

Hi,
Yes lpr is correct. Your printcap file should tell lpr where to send the
output to.
I have 2 Linux PC's and a Win95 PC connected and sharing a printer on one of
my Linux PC's.
The printcap file on the Linux PC which does not have the printer contains only
one uncommented line. It is as follows.
lp:rm=norman:rp=lp:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:
where
rm=norman
says the printer on the Linux PC named norman
and
rp=lp
says use the lp device on the Linux PC which has the printer
and
sd=/var/spool/lpr/lp
says use the directory mentioned ( on this PC ) for print spooling
hope this helps,
best wishes
