I have a problem connecting to my ISP with wvdial. I seem
to connect ok, but then I can't reach any server (Netscape,
ftp, rlogin). I am using SuSE 6.1 and have entered a
nameserver in Yast, which automatically updated resolv.conf.

Any idea?

You might tell them that their ppp is misconfigured. It should not be accepting
your bad suggestion as to your IP address.
They should have come back with a suggestion of their own for your IP address.

I can't connect using Redhat 5.2 and ppp to my ISP. I don't know whether
my ISP
uses PAP or CHAP though I have tried to configure for both using both
username and username@hostname in /etc/pap-secrets and
/etc/chap-secrets.

Below are 2 log files, the first with LCP tracing. I got the LCP
tracing once by putting daemon.debug in /etc/syslog.conf, but can't seem

to get it anymore. Now the log always looks like the 2nd log
when I try to connect.

I can connect fine from Windoze 95.

Next step is to call my ISP.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Robert Berman

I have tried using the GUI network config tool, as well as editing the

ifup ppp0. I have more confidence editing the scripts because
I know what is going on.

For what it's worth, here is ifcfg-ppp0 and chat-ppp0:

ISPs often ( always?) do not know what they are doing. It is usually best to
ignore them and to try the various possiblities. Eg, see the
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
page which has you explicitly try pap/chap first to see what the ISP actually uses
rather than what they say they use.

Sounds more and more likely.

You are asking the peer to authenticate itself to you, unfortunately
very few - if any - do this. There is either an explicit pppd option
somewhere in it's configuration files requiring this, or you are using
ppp-2.3.9 and have a defaultroute to a LAN set.

You'll need to find and remove the option in the first case. In the
second case remove the default route to the LAN and replace it with a
network-specific route, if one is not already present.

Yup. Didn't seem to do diddly to address the problem.

As best as I could tell, the biggest change in the Netgear driver was
a bit of added code to specifically recognize the version of the PNIC
chip they're OEMing, and report the card as a Netgear. There didn't
seem to be any real, substantial changes in their driver w/r/t
compatibility, or to deal with this nasty bug. And, as other folks
have noted, Netgear doesn't always keep their patched driver up to
date w/r/t Don Becker's latest version... and so in many ways the
"patched" Netgear driver is often out of date.

There was some discussion on the tulip-bugs mailing list of the actual
cause of the bug. It's pretty messy - it appears that when the chip
gets confused, it dumps a whole bunch of incorrect stuff into the
receive ring buffers without regard to proper packet boundaries.

One guy working on FreeBSD has implemented a large and hairy patch for
the problem. His fix, if I recall correctly, involves going out into
the buffers full of gunk deposited by the chip, scanning through them,
locating and parsing the packet headers and FCS/CRCs in software, and
actually reconstructing the original packets! Once this is done, his
patch resets the chip and reinitializes the ring buffers.

I was sufficently daunted by the complexity of this patch that I
haven't made any attempt to crossport it into the Linux driver.

A less expensive workaround for the problem would simply be to recognize
the symptoms of the chip error and reset the chip, discarding the
damaged packets (and potentially dropping transmit packets on the
floor). It would be up to the higher layers in the protocol stack to
recover from the loss of data. I did something like this a few years
ago to fix the AMD "lance" driver so that it would recover from
busmastering errors.

Not really. Any particular C++ program (with or without templates) might
have an undecidable halting problem (which in this case means: the problem
"given input X, decide whether that program, when started with input X,
halts or doesn't" is not computable). Nevertheless, the C++ program will
compile to an assembly code program which *itself* has an undecidable
halting problem.

Eh? C++ is of course Turing complete, but so is every assembly language
to which it might be compiled ... I don't know of *any* programming
language in real use that is *not* Turing complete, b.t.w.; there isn't
really much that is necessary to achieve Turing completeness (if you
have something like elementary arithmetic, assignment, and conditional jump,
that's already enough ...).

Subject: Re: How does linuxconf conn/disconnect from ppp0?
Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 12:46:14 -0000

Use the DEMAND option, but be warned that this will cause spurious
(unwanted/extra) dial-ups. To stop those you need to do two things:
deny netbios packets in your output rules for ipchains and prevent DNS
lookups when offline. This is a good idea anyway, because it keeps
the evil hoardes from browsing your file/printer sharing stuff.
Look at /etc/services to see the port numbers for netbios or you could
use something like this below.

ipchains -A output -i ppp0 -p udp -d 0/0 137:139 - j DENY
ipchains -A output -i ppp0 -p tcp -d 0/0 137:139 - j DENY

You also might want to block incomming netbios packets with something
line these below. Again, this is to keep the evil hoardes at bay.

ipchains -A input -i ppp0 -p udp -d 0/0 137:139 - j DENY
ipchains -A input -i ppp0 -p tcp -d 0/0 137:139 - j DENY

One final remark (I'm assuming that this is a home system): comment
out all services in /etc/inetd.conf. You don't need any of them
unless YOU are offering services (such as ftp or a web server) to the
rest of the world.

Okay, I lied. I have one more idea. If you want to prevent automatic
dialups totally, then don't use the DEMAND option of pppd. Instead
created a script called /sbin/request-route and make it executable
with chmod. This script is called by the kernel when it tries to
route a packet, but can't figure out what route to use. You can then
have the script test the first argument (the ip address it is trying
to reach) to see if it is your trigger address and called pppd then,l
if it is.

Good luck.

Hi all,

I recently installed Ethernet cards in my Linux and Win95 computers
and need advise on how best to test them.

My Linux box - SuSE 6.1 and 3com 309B.
The card has been configured and tested using the DOS diagnostic that
came with the card.

dmesg shows Linux is finding and loading the module ok (I think)

ifconfig reports active eth0

On the Win95 side - Laptop with Linksys PCMCIA EtherFast card.

It was installed using the supplied software.

*****************************************************
At this point I would like to try and test out these cards and
computers and see if anything is working.

Can somebody advise me what would be the best way to do some testing
to see if the computers can send anything to each other?

Any advise on testing the 3com card on Linux would be very helpful
too.

Thanks,

if your domain is eg. linux.nl
