Subject: Trouble with TERM settings
Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 09:51:03 GMT
Certain control characters don't work on my Linux system when using
telnet or xterm. The Linux distribution is Suse 5.1, the other system is
a Windows NT 4.0 machine.
First symptom: When telnetting from the NT box to the Linux box using
telnet.exe, backspace and delete remove the character left of the cursor
when in the shell. When in the "vi" program, backspace and delete move
the cursor left. Hitting the cursor down arrow does not scroll the
screen, only the bottom line is updated. I have to do a ctrl-L to
redraw the screen. The "top" command does not work at all, displaying a
garbled screen with only a few lines text.
Second symptom: When displaying a Linux xterm window on the PC using
Exceed or X-Win, the "top" command works as usual, same with vi, however
both backspace and delete remove the character right of the cursor. When
in the shell, both the backspace and cause a beep and display the tilde.
I experimented for hours with the termcap settings, but I could not get
it to work.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you use that machine to connect to the internet, then there definitely
*is* access by "Othter"

Subject: CRAZY IDEA: Linux Box as TCP/IP Network Audio/Visual Server?
Date: 4 Jun 1999 04:54:24 GMT
Hi all,
I was wondering if the following was possible (or even desireable)
I want to set up a home network for data, audio(stereo output), and video. I want a
central
consolidated server for the deal, I dont want to run Data wire, speaker wire, and COAX
to every port
and figure out a way to switch between all the different connections
Suppose you have:
a Linux Box (any Distro, any kernal you want)
A TCP/IP 10/100BaseT network with CAT5 wiring
Quality Soundcard
Quality Video Card
Is it possible to use the Linux Box as a server to send an audio/visual signal
to network ports so that I could hook up a TV and/or some stereo speakers to a network
port WITHOUT a client computer to receive the signal and translate for the TV/Speakers.
I was thinking of a simple device that would connect to a network port and output a
something
relateively simply like an RCA type connection (you know left channel, reight channel,
and/or video channel)
Any thoughts, ideas, flames, go ahead......

Eric,
If you bring up the ISP connection with pppd, I believe the appropriate
script is in /etc/ppp. Try checking for an ip address there.
Also noticed on your original post that you have ip address assigned of
166.93.73.253 and then mention that ifconfig shows 166.72.93.253. This would
of course be a DOUBLE typo, as you also have the 7x and the 93 transposed.
Good luck!

I fixed the above IP address problem by adding the "hardware ethernet"
statement into each host block, on the assumption that maybe the host
name wasn't being matched correctly for some reason. That fixed the IP
address problem, and now all clients are getting the fixed IP addresses
they should be. Each host block now looks like:
host tory {
hardware ethernet XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX; # fake
fixed-address 192.168.0.21;
}
So the correct IP addresses are now consistently handed out correctly
again, but still the leases file remains empty.

Bob,
Could you post the output of "netstat -rn" command as well as the output of the
"ifconfig -a" command? I suspect that there's no "network route" for your
local subnet, but hard to tell from what we have. Also, post the ip address of
the "gateway".
Thanks.

If you configure your Samba server for "user" level security and tell it
to function as a WINS server, then set your "Access level" in Windoze to
"User" and give it the name of your Linux box, Windoze will recognize it
as a "Domain Controller" and log the workstations into it allowing each
user to use their respective /home/* directory on the Linux box. I
haven't gotten much beyond this as my server acts primarily as a
fileserver/central point for backup, rather than a medium for
communications between the workstations.
During the intial setup testing, you will probably want to disable
encrypted passwords in Windows. The Samba docs in /usr/doc/Samba* will
tell you how to edit the registry to do this. Then, after it's all
working read the docs about how to enable encrypted passwords AND CHANGE
IT BACK! While you may not feel the need for domain-style
authentication, I am sure you DON'T want your users impersonating each
other.

Subject: dchpd refuses to update leases file: why?
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 05:00:12 GMT
I am running RedHat 5.1 with 2.0.36 kernel for a small home network.
The machine is a dhcp server in addition to lots of other stuff (router,
firewall, samba and netatalk server, print server, mail, web, etc.).
The dhcp server is from the RPM dhcp-2_0b1pl1-2_i386.rpm. The server
serves IP addresses fine at the moment, but the leases file is always
empty, even well after the maximum lease time defined. This is causing
problems because DNS for the internal network relies on the leases file
for its mappings.
Some more history. I have my dhcpd.conf file set up with some fixed
addresses based on the host name, and the majority of the available
address range (192.168.0.32 through 254) available for dynamic
assignment (rare in our case). The dhcpd.conf file entry for each known
host looked like:
host tory {
fixed-address 192.168.0.21;
}
This all worked fine and the expected IP addresses were handed out to
the correct hosts. dhcpd was maintaining the leases file appropriately
(appending to the end and occasionally rewriting), as expected.
A few weeks ago something changed. dhcpd started handing out IP
addresses in the dynamic range to known host names: 192.168.0.32 for
example, to a known host that should have gotten 192.168.0.23. The
leases file started containing *only* these new, and incorrect, leases,
and forgot entirely about the older leases that matched the "host"
blocks in the dhcpd.conf file.
I restarted dhcpd multiple times, I searched for errors in the
dhcpd.conf file and any hints in any of the log files under /var/log, I
searched through documentation and queried Deja News and the web, and
nobody else seems to have this problem. Lucky me, I get to blaze a new
trail :-) !!
Since then I tried emptying the leases file and restarting dhcpd in an
effort to have dhcpd write out the renewed leases as it got them, and
that didn't help (the leases file remains empty). I have rebooted, no
change. I downloaded, compiled, and successfully installed
dhcp-2.0b1pl27, and there is no change (although the lease file location
has changed). Still an empty lease file! All the while the clients are
getting all the correct addresses for their IP and the various other
network hosts required.
Are there any hints at all on what might be the problem here?

Subject: Bogus packet size error
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 05:23:42 GMT
I have a cable modem (Rogers Cable, Ottawa, ON) and two computers set up
through a hub. I am able to use both computers (one win98, one R.H.5.2)
online at the same time without much of a problem. The win98 computer
has no network related problems and has a fairly quick connection (20-70
KB/sec), but my Linux computer has a very slow connection (~4 K/sec) and
will often stall out on downloads. Also, when I switch over to a text
mode, I receive the following error message repeatedly:
eth0: bogus packet size: 65344, status=0x21 nxpg=0x7f
or the same message but nxpg=0x5f
I can still e-mail, read news, and browse (albeit slowly) while
receiving these messages. Any clue as to the nature of these errors, how
I can fix them, and if it is the source of my stalled ftp downloads and
slow connection speeds?
Thanks,
-Troy

Thanks to all who answered. My solution was to install sans networking,
then build a 2.2.9 kernel, then install networking. Comes up
beautifully, although it requires a few more steps than straight
installation. Also, I stuck with the Auto 16/4 ISA cards, since (once
the upgraded kernel is installed) they "just work". We're bringing up
some more machines here, so I'll probably get a chance to try out the
PCI drivers ... but I wish the Turbo cards worked (are they the
"pinegrove" code?).

'Zackly. Apparently, from the notes at linuxtr.net, this is primarily a
problem at IBM, due to the nature of the internal network.

2.2.8 is supposed to have a bad networking bug in it, isn't it?

I'll try this, soon.

Hmmm ... *laugh* So is IBM's network division actually providing
information to the nice folks at linuxtr.net? Seems like they ought to
... give away the drivers, sell the hardware.
