Subject: corrupted IP addresses problem
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 03:06:09 GMT
Hello, I hope someone can help me with my network problem.
I am trying to set up a simple two node network with a hub in
between, one machine running Linux and the other Win95.
What is happening is simple pinging results in horrendous turnaround
times with 70+% packet loss. Pinging from either machine gives the same
results.
I have tried two different Linuxes (Red Hats 5.2 and 6.0), two
different ethernet cards (Netgear tulip-based and noname realtek 8139,
both PCI), two different hubs, two different speeds (10 and 100mbs), and
swapped out CAT5 cabling. I am beginning to think there is something
wrong with my Linux box hardware.
I put a sniffer on the ethernet device and discovered why I am getting
such poor results: somehow the IP addresses are getting munged. I am
dealing with addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.100, but the sniffer
will occassionally report: "From: 89.10.192.168 To: 1.100.0.0 protocol
160 not recognized." See how the address has been shifted? After awhile,
every network request results in the address getting screwed up and only
a reboot will rectify it. But then after a few good addresses, they
start getting corrupted again.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?
Thanks a bunch for any clues.

I would like to use my PB3400 as a dual-homed firewall. The obvious
solution is to use a PCMCIA ethernet card for my second network
interface. Has anyone gotten any PCMCIA ethernet cards to work with a
PB3400 and LinuxPPC? If so, which PCMCIA card and what drivers were
used?

OK......get Windows 98SE ( Second Edition )....it
costs about $14........... then its a breeze.
On the machine with the modem go to
Start/Help/Connecting to networks/internet connect
sharing and follow the instructions
I have only a 56 modem and have both computers
running of the one modem.....its that easy..........

Subject: linux <-> win95 dhcp problem
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 04:03:49 GMT
hi everyone
as part of a project i'm involved with i'm required to configure a simple lan
consisting (at this stage) of one linux server and one win95 client. the ip
address for the server is static (192.168.1.1) and win95 is to ask for a
dynamically assigned ip address via dhcp
the problem is that the server doesn't ever seem to see the dhcp request and
so doesn't issue an ip #
i'm not sure whether this is a general ethernet problem or dhcp specific
ifconfig shows that i'm dropping ever increasing numbers of rx packets :
[root@dewey net]# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:20:18:72:4C:D7
inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:71 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt:10 Base Address:0x320
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
<...etc...>
the fact that the number of dropped packets increases seems to indicate that
the ethernet cards and hub are communicating correctly and that either the
win95 config is screwed or there is some default firewall rule that is
preventing the dhcpd from seeing the request ?
i expect that there isn't enough info here for someone to provide a solution
to my problem but i'm really not sure what files or additional info is
required - pls let me know so i can help you to help me :)
i have been through the ethernet how-to and dhcpd how-to several times without
finding a reference to this problem
FYI, the server is a 486sx running redhat 6.0, dhcp was installed straight
from the cd-rom using rpm.
dhcpd.conf is as follows:
# dhcpd.conf
server-identifier dewey.mynet.net.au;
option domain-name "mynet.net.au";
shared-network DHCP {
option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
default-lease-time 6000;
max-lease-time 72000;
subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range 192.168.1.64 192.168.1.126;
option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;
}
}
TIA

This is the recent debian package for bing. So I think it should be able to
compile on linux :)

I just went through this today. You need the alpha of a
new version for RedHat 6. It's at:
http://www.real.com/products/player/linux.html
At this point, there is no Netscape plugin; you have to
configure it as a "helper" app.
The installation instructions on the Real.com site
don't bother to tell you that when rpm finishes,
the executable is /usr/bin/realplay
But it does work. :)
Oh yeah: here's an icon I made for the gnome panel.

Groppy,
Try manully editing /etc/conf.modules (assuming you're using redhat). There
should be a line that reads alias eth0 ne2k.o (or whatever mod is needed for
the card). Make another line just like it, but use eth1 instead of eth0.
also, you may need to manually tell it which i/o ports the cards are on...hope
their differnt.

Have you ever heard of uQLx? It's the linux QL emulator, and one of the
recent additions to that is the ability to make it fork into separate copies
of itself so you can have multiple QLs working on the same machine.
I think the inter-process communication between these forks is done rather
cleverly with the QL network emulation... This means all the virtual QLs can
talk to each other using the standard SuperBASIC interpreter...
(could be wrong though)
Just thought I'd mention it because it seems to be a similar thing to what
you were talking about.

Subject: samba setup problem
Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 04:17:12 GMT
I am unable to get past step 3 in DIAGNOSIS.txt.
testparm returns no errors.
I can ping linux to win95 and win95 to linux.
I can ftp to and from the linux box with ftp program on w95 box.
I can, sometimes, get swat to work.
When I type
smbclient -L 'hostname' -N [where 'hostname' is the name I can use to
ping from one machine to another]
I get:
Added interface ip=192.168.1.1 bcast=192.168.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password
pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are invalid.)
The interface information is correct.
What's wrong? What do I need to do to get this to work?
smbd is version 2.0.5a
kernel is 2.2.10
If I need to post the output of testparm, I will, but I was trying to
save download time for you.

I need to bind a few IP's to the NIC for web sites. Can anyone point me
in the right direction for this?
Thank you!

Subject: inews error - No such newsgroup
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 19:12:23 GMT
I just switched from a modem based ISP to cable based. I had
previously been maintaining a local news spool via suck, but now
that I have a fast connection I'd prefer to read directly from
my ISP's news server. That works just fine using trn with
NNTPSERVER set. The problem is I can't post. It looks like trn
uses Pnews to compose a post then sends it to inews for posting.
I'm using inews-1.7-4 and when I try posting it hangs for several
seconds then says "No such newsgroup as athome.test". I can read
the newsgroup, so I know it exists.
The inews man page is pretty sparse, so I can't figure out what's
happening. How does inews go about figuring out if a newsgroup exists
or not? How does it know what news server to connect to (I'm assuming
it uses the NNTPSERVER environmental variable).
Any help would be appreciated.
