Actually, doesn't the 530 use an Intel chipset? Try the Intel EtherPro
driver.
Otherwise, I prefer the DFE-500TX. It uses the DEC Tulip driver and works
VERY well. It is my favourite Linux Ethernet card. It's fast and stable. I
even use it in servers.
Good luck.

Why not send the broadcast using address 192.168.255.255? The broadcast
should reach all listeners in the 192.168 network. It's been a while since
I've done this, but it should work.

Hi, I just installed RH 6.0 after getting rid of 5.2. I forget how I
set up my internet connection, last time i did something and it filled
in my IP number for me. When installing, it said it didn't find my
ethernet card, but one shows up when I go to administration ->
networking. How do I make sure it's configured? It's a netgear pcmcia
on my sony 735 vaio laptop. I just set it up as net2000 pci last time
and everything worked great. Thanks for any help! - Christian

Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 16:18:44 GMT
I recently pulled down a copy of RH 6.0 to install on my PC that is
currently running RH 5.2. The PC has an 16/4 IBM token ring isa card
that is working like a champ under 5.2. I did a new installation of
6.0 on this machine using the ftp installation option. The bootable
floppy was able to find the token ring card and complete the 6.0
install off of the ftp server.
The problem is during the starting of 6.0. You can see it attempting
to use tr0, but fails. ifconfig does not show the tr0 device. PnP is
turned off in the bios, and the nic has had PnP disabled as well. When
I reinstall 5.2, token ring again works like a champ.
Any thoughts?

Subject: Re: basic network question

Fabian,
Couple of issues to address:
First, I don't think you need to add a specific host route, but here's how
you would do it:
route add -host 192.168.10.52 netmask 255.255.255.255 metric 1
(ie the routing table needs to match the entire address for this route).
The 192.168.10.0 route should be sufficient, however.
As for not being able to ping the other host, you might try this:
tcpdump -vv > /tmp/tcpdump.txt 2>&1 &
ping 192.168.10.52
kill <PID of tcpdump>
The tcpdump.txt file should show you're machine doing an arp request to
find the other's MAC address, and an arp reply from the other providing
it's MAC address. The next packets should then be an ICMP echo request
and an ICMP echo reply.
If you see packets going out, but not coming back in, I would suspect that
either you have a cable issue (if direct connect, need a crossover cable)
or that the other machine does not know how to route packets back to you.
Finally, the default route that you have (0.0.0.0) appears to be connect
to a dialup/ppp interface. Are you using ppp on this machine to connect
to your ISP?
This route shouldn't, however, interfere with your ability to ping another
host on you're same ip subnet.
Good luck!

Subject: Two-way IPMasq?
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 05:10:18 GMT
I've been looking for a while, but haven't seen this particular setup
addressed, so here goes:
I understand how to setup Linux to do IP masquerading for a network i.e.
multiple machines hiding behind one valid IP address. Naturally, all
traffic must originate from the "private" machines out; machines on the
outside cannot directly "see" machines on the private segment.
What I want to do is this: (some commercial packages can do this; I
want to know if Linux can too...)
Can Linux bidirectionally do IP masq'ing? Meaning, can I set up
a static mapping? (as Firewall-1 can...)
I have a partial class-C. For specific reasons, I want ALL my
boxes to be on a nonroutable segment (192.168.x.y). This includes
boxes that need to be visible to the outside world. So what I
want to do is set up a rule that says: when I get a connection
to my real mail server IP (for example, 1.2.3.4), send that traffic
to 192.168.1.5. When I send outgoing traffic from 192.168.1.5,
make it appear as if it comes from 1.2.3.4.
My normal clients will use the normal setup; all traffic from all
other machines in 192.168.1.x will go out behind a single IP
(1.2.3.1).
I DO NOT want to do ipportfw. I want ALL PACKETS TO ALL PORTS
to forward to different machines. I understand there are
external routing issues (i.e. to forward packets addressed to 1.2.3.4
to go to 1.2.3.1 instead). But I don't know how to set up the
rules so that outside traffic is mapped properly once it hits the
Linux firewall.
Any suggestions?
Joe

Browsing (IPC share) will not work w/o a proper guest user. Make sure
your guest user is set to a vailid user (usually 'nobody'). Check to
see if the guest user has access by 'su nobody' from root. Also, some
95/98 boxes need the 'remote announce' option.

IRC and ICQ are TOTALLY differnt concepts. ICQ is for sending messages
back and forth, and does NOT require you to sit and watch the chat go
by. You can have messages sent to you, and you don't have to answer
them right away, because they're not getting pushed out of the way by
others. IRC is a CHAT program. Totally different.
