Sounds like maybe your inews and trn may be incompatible. Which version
of trn are you using? And where did you get this inews from? Is it from
the INN distribution or something else? If you're still trying to use
INN's inews with a remote server, I don't think it will work.
If you're not using trn 4 (which has its own inews), I'd highly recommend
you get it from the author's home page at http://www.clari.net/~wayne/

You have to download a really huge tar file frow www.stardivision.com. Then
you untar it, and run their setup progam. That will install it for you.
Keep in mind that it is a laborous task (it requires a lot of personal info and
liscence keys, even for a free download), and will require a lot of hard drive
space (and time if you don't have a fist internet connection.

I'm running DNS on a Slackware network server. It works

Sun (Solaris 7) or SGI (IRIX 5.3) machines.

I think this has something to do with PAP identification,

Hi,
I've just bought Ret Hat 6 & a D-Link DFE-530TX 10/100 PCI Adapter.
The problem, as you have guessed, is that the card is not listed. What
do I do? I've downloaded a .c file for the card but don't know what to
do with it.
Windoze tell me that it's io is 0xb800 but all the books suggest it
should be on 0x300 or 0x310.
I suppose I have to re-compile the kernel but don't know where to start.
Most of the books tell you all about somebody's wonderful windowing
thing and not what you really need to know. Bill Ball's "Using Linux"
seems OK but nothing about my basic problem.
Eventually I want to run the Linux box as a file server for my NT box
and my Mac. Is AppleTalk automatically included? (if I ever get it to
see my card).
BTW, why does Linux list hundreds of monitors when important stuff like
network cards only get a couple listed and then not much documentation
on what to do if your card's not there.
Thanks,
Paul

Why not check out the power of Perl? There is the libnet package of
modules with things like Net::FTP, Net::SMTP, etc. and there is a separate
Net::Telnet module and some sort of POP3 module and MIME::Lite for
sending e-mail with attachments. And there is LWP for all sorts of web
functions. These all make automated scripting fairly easy to very easy.

Try using -U and setting a username. It's possible the W95 machine requires a
username/password, and your Linux username doesn't match. Also, put i -P at
the end so that it will prompt you for a password.

Is rdate installed? The message means that the rdate
program cannot be found. Make sure the package is
installed. From / type locatate rdate and see what it gives
you. If you just come back to a command prompt (no
directories listed) then it's not installed. If the output
says something like /usr/sbin/rdate then you'll have to type
/usr/sbin/rdate -s xxx.yyy.zzz where xxx.yyy.zzz is the NTP
server you want to synch with.

Well, I seem to be having the same problems that were described on
FreshMeat when trying to run Apple's free application-level proxy for
QuickTime Streaming (RTSP/RTP). The proxy crashes unceremoniously when
I try actually connecting to a QuickTime streaming site with my Mac.
Does anyone know if progress is being made on a Linux kernel module
that understands these protocols, so that it can be handled
transparently by the ipchains masquerading system?
If not, anyone have good pointers on documentation where I could learn
how to write one and share it with the world?

try checking the permissions on the directories in the path, for instance, if
you have a chat script which you invoke as
"/etc/ppp/MyISP-on", do you have execute permission on the /etc/ppp
directory? Just a guess. But it is a place to start looking.

Default dir is /tftpboot so that is the directory I used. See 'man tftpd'
and be sure to uncomment the tftp line in inetd.conf and restart inetd
before using it.
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.tftpd
To be on the safe side you could comment it out when not using it. I
saved the files from the Cisco end. Not sure if it told me what the
filenames were or if I tried it once, noted the filenames and then touched
the files in /tftpboot to create them. The files need o+w permission to
write to them, but I remove that after writing. I ended up with files
like this where cla-val-elgin was the name of the router (on private net):
[deffland@UNKNOWN_11 deffland]$ ls -l /tftpboot
total 4273
-rw-rw---- 1 root root 1888 Jul 13 1998 cla-val-elgin-confg

Search deja news for cable modem. I know someone is running

I just went through this same sort of problem last week. Putting two
identical 3c509
cards into an old 486. After searching around, it finally got solved.
First, it is my understanding that the 3c509 has a pre-dated sort of
plug-and-play on
it even though it is ISA. Combine this with the fact that all the cards
are preset to
IRQ10, IO 300h. And two cards conflict.
First, goto /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports and find some open
locations. You'll
already see IRQ10, IO300h taken by the card in use. Find another free
IRQ and IO.
Then goto the 3com website and find the DOS drivers for the 3c5x9 cards.
Use disk 2 (dos only), not the windows one. Here you can configure your
cards. I left
one at IRQ10, IO 300h, and put the other to IRQ11, IO 310h (or something
like that).
These options are both available in the dos config executable you will
find on this second
driver disk. Also make sure that you turn plug-and-play off on the
cards. From what I
read online, it seems that windows will turn the P&P back on, so don't go
there.
You could also mark the HW address of each card down. You can get this
info in the
config program. Or its also written on the card. According to Becker's
guide to 2 cards
at once, the lower HW addy of the 3c509's will be assigned eth0.
I didn't have to use an append line to detect two cards. I dunno if this
is a result of the 3c509
driver being built into the kernel or the plug and play features of the
card.
Anyway, this solved all my problems. Now I have one card on 192.168.0.2
and the other causing
me headaches as I try to learn about DHCP. Hope this helped. I'm no
expert, but found all
this info online or in really old news posts.

Hello,
I am curious.
I had some trouble with ICS == Internet Connection Sharing
of win 98..
Before I installed it I had two TCI/IP bindings on
the "host" computer, i.e. the one with the modem.
One binding for Dial-up networking in which I used
DHCP ("get settings automatically"), and one for the
NIC which I set myself to 192.168.0.1.
Now I understand that this is just the IP address that
ICS wants to assign my computer, and I worried
about this as I installed ICS and rebooted and then
saw the new third TCP/IP binding for ICS.
I worried that the ICS desire for 192.168.0.1
might conflict with my NIC.
Quite the opposite happened.
I could still see the other systems on my network
(three systems: 98 + 98 SE + 95/NT server4/Linux)
just fine but my dial-up networking connections weren't
working any longer.
Any ideas? Did this happen to anyone else?
Thank you very much for the time,
and an email CC would be appreciated, if possible,
Christopher

Subject: Telnet login fails after 60 sec

Hello everybody,
A little and maybe simple question: If I wait for a longer time then 60
sec when I'm logging in with telnet, the login is cancelled. How can I
change that 60 seconds.
Thanx 4 all.

You can either use "SMTP after POP" or relay mail for some domains or
adresses only.

i have redhat 6, to configure ppp is easier using netcfg in X. with
netcfg, you'll have these file fully configured.
/etc/../network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
/etc/ppp/pap-secret if you choose pap
when the basic things is ready, you could launch ppp with command #ifup
ppp0.
once you got this working, you configure demand dialing. you just need to
add few lines in /etc/ppp/options. the rest has been taken care by netcfg.
206.115.154.50:206.115.154.50
ipcp-accept-remote
ipcp-accept-local
demand
idle 60
lock
don't forget to start your ppp0 at boot. my configuration works without
diald. i do not know if it work when diald is around.
