Bonjour,

I would like to configure my interfaces ppp for each user of my
computer:

ppp0  ---> user A
ppp1 ---> user B

Is such a thing possible and how?

I have linux rh 5.2

Instead of a particuliar user it could be a group.

Thank you.

ug. So, I wanted to avoid sending my cleartext passwd to my pop
server every time I checked my mail...sniffers being so common these
days. I did some research, and found that the only reasonable, non-
commercial solution is using imap, with md5 authentication
compiled in. So I doenload the latest imap source from wash. univ,
 and get busy.
2 days later, I'm still confused. Sadly the source docs are...
let's say, sparse. I'm using libc5 btw...for which there is
explicit support in the source. I can compile a vanilla imapd,
with no modifications to the Makefile. While this binary does
indeed run, it doesn't recognize any of my usernames as an
authorized login. read, re-read docs, did everything the same
 3 times, no good.
So, whatever, I figure, I wanted md5 authentication anyway. I
follow the docs to the letter, 6 times, and the code just chokes
on compile. It hits the authentication source and dies a
grisly, noisy death, with complaints about copious redefinitions.
I tried looking under the hood of the code, but any changes
I made to what I thought might be the problem just tends to make
different compilation errors, but errors just the same.

I'm confounded that such a widely used protocol and daemon
is giving me this much of a hard time...does anyone have
imap experience? Or do you have a different mail authentication
 system I could use instead?

(PS "use ssl" and similar responses won't help...please let
 me know of specific implementations!)

Hello,

I recently ran into a similar problem. I upgraded to 128MB ram and my
previously working ISA network card disappeared. I am running 2.2.2 at the
moment.

My solution:
append ="mem=127M ether=..."

Possible alternate solution:
One person who responded suggested that there are conflicts between some ISA
cards and some memory configurations.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Moving ISP from NT to RH5.2
Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1999 09:06:20 -0500

We are being asked to move our remotely provided web services under NT4
to local hardware and software of our choice. Obviously, the easiest
method is to use NT4 server and continue with the status quo but the
additional cost for management software is not acceptable to the owner.
We currently lease a remote server and have been building an NT4 server
to bring online and do away with the remote costs and headaches. I have
a mirror server online now under NT4 but as I become more familiar with
Linux, I can see the advantages in networking over NT4. I haven't had a
chance to noodle out all of the security issues but it can't be any
worse than NT....

Since I'm having to do all of the system management from a remote dialin
or network connection via telnet or pcAnywhere, I would much prefer to
build a new server under Linux RH5.2 with mail and news as well as
Apache and FP98 extensions. I have the telnet, ftp, Apache/FP98 issues
resolved and they work fine, as does Samba 2 with SWAT. The mail and
news under Linux, however, are totally new territory for me. As far as
webs go, I can export all of them from NT to RH/Apache just fine.

Can anyone steer me toward the information I would need to move or
create all of the users, account info, mail, news, web publishing, etc.
under RH5.2? I have until March 31 to get a working config or we'll bite
the bullet and go with NT4 while I climb the Linux learning curve.

Thanks

Bob

Howdy.

Gert Doering, in his online documentation for mgetty, discussed dialin and
dialout with the same modem.
It seems to mostly have to do with the conventions for naming devices. I
think basically that you should
make sure that you are using ttyS* for dialin and dialout, instead of cua*
for dialout and ttS* for dialin.
Something about confusing lock files. Chech out his web page. Very
informative. Look for a discussion
on devices. You can find a link to this site from my web page,

You could assign certain right to users to a directory where only
group a users had permissions and that's where their $PATH to
ppp-startup-script is located. Each groups startup could be
tailored that way.
You could give each a ppp-alias-A and ppp-alias-B which setup
in .bashrc points group a to one group of startup files and b to
another etc.
Proably quite a few way's to do this.

Worked for me.

I agree, but its a minimal investment for potentially a 10-20k payoff
in salary. A semi-experienced NT/Network person doing self-study can
do it in about 6 to 8 months. You're only out the cost of the books
and tests. I think both the CNE and MCSE are over rated, but in my
case, 2 previous employers gave me huge increases in salary and
promotions just because of them.

I have recently been tasked with connecting 2 IP networks (for branch
offices ) across the
internet for a local non-profit organization. Because of the nature of the
company, they
dont have a lot of money to spend on proprietary/hardware solutions to this
problem.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience establishing this type of
connection with
Linux, and what tools are best for the job; and what your impressions are.

Basically; the current set-up looks like this:

Networks A and B have private IPs, the Proxy is the only one with a public
address
 NetworkA----Proxy----64K ISDN----ISP
 NetworkB----Proxy----64K ISDN----ISP

I would obviosuly like something like:
 NetworkA----Gateway----64K ISDN----| ISP |----64K
ISDN----Gateway----NetworkB

Thanks in advance for any impressions.

Hi. I have a problem with a red-hat 5.1 linux router. It is using ipmasq to
act as an dial on demand internet gateway for < 5 clients (all the clients
are win95/98). From behind the linux router, it is possible use Internet
Explorer or Netscape without a hitch, and recieving mail via a pop3 client
is not a problem. The problem is sending mail with SMTP. When trying to send
mail from the client (using outlook), there is a timeout and a message ("no
route to host"). I thought there might be a problem with the client, so I
went to the router and telneted to port 25 of the mailserver I was trying to
contact, and I immediately got "no route to host". Any ideas? I am using a
dynamic ppp connection to the internet and these rules:
ipfwadm -F -p accept
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.93.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0

192.168.93.0 is the network number I am using behind the router

ATS80=1 does do the MLPPP, and you have to add it to your chat script
that line should read
'OK' 'ATS80=1D5551212'
obviously substitute the number you have to dial, and make sure your
pap-secrets file is also set up

I'v been a Windows-user for many years, so I took

This is probably a(n) FAQ, so bear with me. Has anyone successfully
configured both mgetty and diald to work on the same modem line,
allowing dialout on demand if modem is not in use, but also allowing
incoming PPP connections with mgetty if a dialout is not in progress?
Any gotchas I should be aware of?

If there are HOWTOs or any other help on this, I would appreciate it
if someone could point me in the right direction.

Also, I can build mgetty on my primary build system, but would like
to install it on a system with no build environment (stripped-down
RedHat 5.1). I realize I could move over the various binaries and
configs by hand, following the "make install" from the Makefile, but
before I do this, are there any pre-built 1.1.20 RPMs for this
system? Or alternatively, does anyone have a script for building an
RPM for this after building it on my build system?

Thanks,

Bob,
You will probably get some much more interesting help but when
things go south there is always the Linux Documentation
Projects's documentations which is good. There is the SAG and
NAG, System Administrators Guide and Network Administrators
Guide. There is also a HOWTO directory which extensive help and
a sub dir mini for extra more specific help. There is also quite
a bit of the HOWTO's in HTML format which I find faster to go
through. A few desk references such a O'Reilly's System
Administrators Guide are good.
Your question is sort of broad to give any answer. After you
get cranking you will have more specific questions at got'ya
points what can be answered.
In what way were you plugged into the network previously - did
you just ship information to your hosting service and no other
connection? Are you getting a T1 and domain name etc??

Jakob,
Load up and isolate the machine from the network. Ping
127.0.0.1. What happens?
What are you doing to create the traffic collisions you
mentioned?
What is the configuration your testing in can you draw and
number what you network looks like? Give some route information?
