you probably didnt select 'scsi support' or whatever its called and
compiled it into the kernel.

the main scsi support option is what im talking about.

There are two LAN cards in my computer and I try to setup them.
But something happens that I counld get these card infomation by command
"ifconfig".
I couldn't ping to anyother address but my senond card address. Before(Just
one lan card in my
computer) that I could ping to anywhere.
Could somebody tell me what happens and how to solve this situation??
Please give me some opinion or methers to solve.
 Thanks very much!!

Linux -- Slackware (kernel 2.0.36)
And I have edit below files:
/etc/lilo.conf # detect two cards both of the same time
(append="ether=irq0,io0,eth0 ether=irq1,io1,eth1")
/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 # configure two cards (ifconfig .....) add to

Well, the second one was meant to add information that I accidentally
left out of the first, and that I thought would be important to
someone that would need to answer my question.

The third was sent after hours of frustration and Altavista searching,
at early hours in the morning, so my manners weren't their best I
guess. I'm sorry

Tell me Kevin Martin, how did you come to be knowledgable of
networking? Did you take classes somewhere? Did you have a friend or
someone else take some time and teach you in person? Did you buy a
book (if so, which one)? I'm really lost right now. I don't know where
to look for help, and I'm curious how so many other people have
managed to learn this stuff.

I have this same problem Adam but it was caused by another reason.
Somehow mine got messed up after I tried to change my HOSTNAME.
Sometimes b/c of me changing my hostname i get an error when i go to a
website saying it cant find my hostname or something like that which to
my knowledge shoudlnt be a problem if im trying to access someone else's
website, right?

I also get tons of errors at startup about my netmask being wrong or
something and a few other things associated I believe with me changing
my HOSTNAME (from localhost.localdomain to homeofglitch)

and like you i can activate lo anymore.

let me know if someone has helped u with this yet or when they do.

erscheint mir recht schwierig ;-)

I personally dont use NN for enws or email, so I've never seen the
problem you described in the original post. But the real solution
to your problem would be in putting appropriate entries in
/etc/hosts and in /etc/nsswitch.conf to ensure that hosts gets
looked up before DNS.

Then you can go back to putting in the "name" in the email config
of NN.

Have a look into /etc/inittab. The kernel starts only 1 Process after
it initalized itself: init. ("man init" is a good idea for reading).
After kernel init, the init process takes all over. This is configured
in /ets/inittab. Take a look into this and all comes clear to you.

After installing a distribution, I install on WWW Servers Apache directly
from source, using my own profile script, change it to your things you
have on your mind. I prefer to jump out of the linux fsstd for my private
setup, because no "rpm --upgrade apache.rpm" may mess up my setup.

Wish success.

Hi, heres a partial answer, and a follow-on
question.

Did you try to use minicom to initialize the
modem ? The PPP docs (man-page, HOWTO, ..)
describe the procedure in detail, I summarize..

start minicom, feed it AT(your phone here), then
quit without resetting modem (^A q), then quickly
do `pppd -detach /dev/ttySx`.

Ive found that this allows ppp to do all the
necessary handshaking and set up the IP channel.

The curious thing is that I cant get pppd to do
the entire job itself, the chat script runs and
appears to successfully do the modem handshaking
with the NT server, but PPP/LCP handshaking never
happens (/var/log/messages is nearly empty), and
the server shuts me down after a few seconds.

Ive tried using minicom's modem init-string in my
chat-script, and have played with all variations
of single and double-quoting, and \escaping in
the AT arguments, to no avail.

So, whats different about using minicom to do the
modem init and dialing ? Im assuming Ive missed
something subtle in the chat-script, but Ive been
thru it countless times now.

If its worth seeing, let me know. Im currently
using NT (eccch) to access the web cuz of this
ppp problem.

TIA

Since I upgraded from my 2.0.36 system to the new kernel 2.2.9 my network

How do I enable broadcasting again? My network looks correctly configured:

If setting up a cable modem under Linux is harder than setting up
dial-up PPP, then setting up dial-up PPP must be _*REALLY*_ easy. During
my first redhat install, to get my cable-modem working, all I did was
tell it to use a ne2000-pci driver and dhcp! now that's easy.

Looks like the hardware is setup and networking is configured properly.
That leaves command invocation. Don't you need an interface parameter to
the ping command? I assume that both cards are wired together somehow,
perhaps on the same hub. Maybe the kernel can't figure out which interface
to use.

Subject: Setting up an ISDN TA
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 11:36:06 +0000

I have a plain version of Redhat 5.2 i386 kernel 2.0.36 and I want to
set it up to connect to my ISP via an 3com Sonix ISDN TA attached via
the serial port, can anyone point me in the right direction on where to
find the information to do this or email me a guide.

TIA

Rob
