Subject: restricting dns queries...

I have a couple of DNS servers (BIND 8.1.2) doing double duty as Master DNS
servers for a domain and also providing resolver service for my LAN. I'd
like for the Internet in general to be able to query these servers for names
particular to my domain/zone (obviously), but I don't want everybody and
their brother to be able to use me as their general DNS server.
I've examined the "allow-query" option, but I'm a little confused how to
make it do what I want. I would like to make a generic rule to only allow
queries from my subnet, but allow everybody to query for my specific zone.
Is there a way to do this?
Thanks!

Haha... before you start learning a new language it'd be more
useful to master a good spell-checker, and perhaps read over a
primer on proper grammer and punctuation! <smile> Just
kidding, anyway....
Probably the most useful thing you can download for Tcl/Tk is
FreeWrap. FreeWrap is a freeware program that can KIND of be
considered a "compiler". What it does is take a tcl/tk script
you specify, and bundle it in to one single standalone executable
with a tcl/tk interpreter also bundled (this is feasible, since
the built-in interpreter is less than a meg). Using FreeWrap,
you can actually make standalone apps for people without having
to worry about what interpreters they do or do not have installed
on their machines. Another cool thing is that you can use the
FreeWrap executable as a single-file Wish interpreter...
eliminating the need to download the full-blown normal tcl/tk
distribution from Scriptics for each machine you work at. The
homepage for it is at:
http://www.albany.net/~dlabelle/freewrap/freewrap.html
Another useful thing you might like (especially if you're from a
VB background) is "Visual Tcl". It is a fully TCL-based (meaning
that you can use it both on Windows and Linux) TCL programming
environment... just like Visual Basic, it allows you to do things
in seconds that would take hours doing by hand. Plus, it's so
compact... you can literally fit it and the FreeWrap compiler
together on a single floppy disk, and be able to carry your
entire tcl/tl development library in your coat pocket! The
homepage is at:
http://www.neuron.com/stewart/vtcl/
There are absolutely NO really good tck/tl tutorials out there
that I've found for doing graphics. There is a very good
interactive tcl/tk tutorial (written in tcl/tk itself) by Clif
Flynt (the homepage is:
http://www.msen.com/~clif/TclTutor.html). However, it only
covers the "guts" of the language... it never gets into any
graphics. Unfortunately... for graphics or CGI programming,
people just have to bite the bullet and buy a book (that same
Clif Flynt guy also wrote about the best tcl/tk book out there).
Good luck!

Why don't you want to install other software? Much easier..
Well, the only way I can think of, is this: on the Client (non modem),
Install TCP/IP and make it something like 192.168.0.2. Make the other PC
192.168.0.1, and then on the Client, tell TCP/IP to install a gateway -
192.168.0.1
That might work. But best to go for Sygate.

I've been running rh 6.0 with public access to Apache and MySQL wihtout
a burp for over a month now. Never had the slightest problems with
networking . . .
Until today. I had to boot into win98 for a minute and when I rebooted
back into linux, networking failed.
The symptoms:
- local lookbacks and pinging work fine but no access to outside
network.
- trying to run any service which uses tcpd (such as telnet) to go out
immediately produces 'Host name lookup failure'
- I can telnet locally only by using 'telnet localhost'
- Telneting to my box from another machine results in 'no route to host'
- running # netstat -nr
produces normal output, except it lists the gateway as 0.0.0.0
- running # route add default gw <GW #>
produces 'SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable'
- running # ifconfig
lists only lo and nothing for eth0, even though during booting, eth0
comes up and starts as normal
I changed nothing in any networking or device .conf files, and all
crucial /etc files (like hosts or inetd.conf) haven't been touched. The
card works because I had no problems in win98. A hard look through
linuxconf shows everything normal, I even compared with another
functioning RH 6.0 box.
The two things that were different today than any other day:
1) during shut down the system tried and failed to unmount a nfs mount
from a RH 5.2 system that had been disconnected from the network. I
tried to do it a few days ago and not only did it fail, the attempt
froze the terminal.
2) today I tried to install realplayer G2 using gnorpm and repeatedly
failed. (Oh, and trying to uninstall raplayer also failed.) And I mean
failed to the point that I had to kill the gnorpm process at command
line.
I searched deja.com and some HOWTOs for about 3 hours and while
questions like this have been answered, all problems were always
concerning new installs for which networking was never working, and
never situations like this, where the system has been stable for a while
and nothing was *advertantly* altered.
Thanks in advnace for the time.

Subject: UDP port unreachable problem
Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 11:22:16 -0500
Hi there, there's a little problem I can't seem to fix and was wondering
if somebody could give me any hints ;
I have got a 4 nodes on my internal network and 1 server (all running 2.2=
=2E11
kernels) the server is trying to send something from UDP port 5428 to UDP
port 5428 (both source and target port are the same) node1 (the recieving
box) doesn't know what to do with this and sends back a ICMP to the
server saying that the port is unreachable (which makes sense because
there's nothing listening on that port and I haven't got a clue what shou=
ld
be listening, /etc/services is no help at all) Now this thing happens eve=
ry
2 seconds or so. I was wondering if there is a way to figure out which
process (pid) is trying to send the message so I can figure out why
it is sending it. I treid a number of aproaches but still can't figure ou=
t
what the pid is, I tried netstat -p -u to no avail (it isn't in the list)=
I also
tried lsof but lsof neither seems to be able to locate the source. I then
checked /proc/net/udp and did find the stream but this only points to
an i-node which doesn't help me much further.
Does anybody know which program uses UDP port 5428 (for both
sending and recieving) or beter ; is there a way to figure out which
program is doing the transmission ?
(p.s. a raw dump of the UDP packet didn't give any clues either)
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
flux.

I am using Red Hat Linux 6.0 with a USR 56k Internal modem. No matter what I
try it will not dial out. I have created the scripts needed for it to work
(I think) under the linuxconf program and tried using Usernet to establish
the connection. The modem does not even dial out. Someone tried suggesting
using the isapnp program, but I don't know how to use it.I also need to know
how I can just change the phone number and password of the connection so I
may take this computer and use it at a different location.

I'm having a similar problem and have performed all kinds of tweaks on my
inetd.conf, hosts.allow, hosts.deny, securetty, etc. files and couldn't get
it to work. I am able to telnet into a Redhat 5.2 box but not to any
Mandrake 6.0 or Redhat 6.0 boxen. I finally got around to looking for the
/usr/sbin/in.telnetd and realized it is nowhere in my machine. I have
other in.daemon files but not in.telnetd. I checked my Redhat 5.2 box and
sure enough, in.telnetd was there in /usr/sbin.
It may seem simplistic but you don't suppose I have to have the in.telnetd
file in /usr/sbin for tcpd to invoke it? Does anyone know which rpm
package should have contained in.telnetd or can otherwise direct me to
where I could get it?
Thanks,
Leonard

I don't know, but I'm having the same problem.
I don't get a 'server not found' message, I get a
'document contains no data' message.
Let me know if this is a familiar problem.

Hi,
I have been recently been experiencing a problem with my networking
slowing down. If I ping my other machine, the ping time is normally less
than 1 ms. However, occasionally (it has happened 2 or 3 times in the
last week), it becomes a lot slower, sometimes taking up to 30 ms.
However, if I just restart networking (using the network startup script in
/etc/rc.d/init.d), it goes back to the sub-1 time. Any ideas?

Unfortunetly, I wont be able to use ASDL because I'm setting up a server,
and I need both IP numbers, which I suspect won't be available on an asdl
connection, and also real, reliable bandwidth. 128k to tele house compared
