Hallo, gibt es in dieser Gruppe irgendjemanden der mit Linux und ISDN-Karte
erfolgreich seinen 1&1 Internet zugang nutzt?
delete route ....
was heit das?

You can have up to 30 attachments and a total of 185 meters on thinnet
coax. Note that a 10BaseT hub is actually a repeater. They are
not all that expensive and some include coax connectors if you want to
keep your existing segments. Coax should handle your situation but
10Bt tends to isolate problems and it is easy to add and disconnect
stations without disturbing the others.

Hubs are typically simple repeaters. An all-10Meg hub allows the
full 185 meters on the coax, 100 meters on each 10BaseT. If it also allows
100Meg, it is acting as a switch although it may combine all of
each speed and only act as a switch between the two. There are
differences between brands in respect to the way the different
speed connections are handled. The 100Bt length is also 100 meters
(each) but the cable must be rated at cat 5.

Having a little problem - maybe someone can help.
Working with a small test network -
I can connect to my Linux machine (Samba 2.0.3) from a WIN NT
workstation.(VER 4.0 sp 5) with password encryption enabled.
I can connect to my WIN NT server (ver 4.0 sp 3) with my NT workstation (VER
4.0 sp 5) and can connect with my NT workstation (Windows 2000 beta 3)
The problem is, I can't connect to Samba with Windows 2000 - I get an error
message - "The remote procedure call failed and did not execute" - BUMMER
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I recently upgraded to RH6 and everything is working great, however,
I am getting the following errors in /var/log/messages when I dial in :
(Like I said, everything is working great...)
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
I'm just wondering what this is...
I have the module "ppp_deflate" loaded already.
If I install this module, could I get better internet connection times?
(I'm hoping that it's a better type of data compression... : )
If it is, how might I go about installing it?
Thanks!
Please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] , as I don't get on much.
Thanks again!

You must not only put .htm extension on the search path of httpd.conf,
you must also specify in srm.conf that .htm files must be read as HTML
ones!! Watch on srm.conf, you will find how to tell apache to
associate a file extension to an image, text, or html document.

Well ..this is a Linux group, so naturaly we all do the opposite...use Linux
to connect to the net and route any Windows machines through Linux...you
might want to reconsider and switch things around.
But if you must....here's my thoughts..
Since Win95/98 doesn't act as a router on its own, you have to setup a
'proxy' server on the Win machine. Several years ago I used a proxy server
called 'Wingate'...( there are many others). Once you setup the proxy, you
must then reconfigure all your browsers, ftp clients, and whatever on the
other machines to point to the hostname or IP address of the machine running
the proxy. Wingate seemed to work ok for www access, but was a little
klunky when it came to things like telnet and ftp. It also didn't support
some protocols like nntp and chat, but maybe that's changed. Anyhow, the
free version would support 2 concurrent machines (the local machine, and any
1 additional machine) at a time. If you wanted to have say 3 machines
concurrent, then you needed to purchase an upgraded copy.
good luck.. Al

I'm having just a bit of difficulty configuring my linksys 10/100
Etherfast network card under Mandrake. As far as I've heard,
Plug-n-Play is interferring with my normal operation. The OS itself
does recognize the fact that the card exists (cat /proc/pci shows that
it is in fact there), linksys uses the tulip driver, of which I have
downloaded and properly compiled as a module, and Mandrake does support
modules. However, running "modprobe tulip" gives me an error dealing
with "special parameter IO" something or other. I have a W95 hard drive
configured that I've swapped out with my linux hard drive, so I can't
pull the error up on demand, and am trying to do this from memory. Any
help configuring my motherboard, or ethernet card (removing plug n play)
or getting the card working properly would be greatly appreciated. If
possible, please respond by email as well to [EMAIL PROTECTED] as I
rarely check newsgroups...

pppd need root priv's because it changes the kernel routing table. So
the only way to do this is make it suid.

I'm going to ignore your language, it's not appropriate here, and answer your
question.
Set your default routing to be your router. Your router is going to be
handling all the details. As root use the linuxconf program to change the
networking options, you'll see how when you run the program.
Now, do you really mean a T1, a very expensive line that normally an ISP has
for the incoming feed, and then they use a terminal server to connect
their customers to the Internet. In a nutshell, you basically come from the TS
to the R and then out to the Internet.

Try the option 'EtherExpressPro/100 support'. These cards use exactly

I have upgraded to diald 0.99-1 and it seems to be working almost
perfectly! But - I am leaving my server running, and need to share my
internet connection with the voice line in our home. diald always answers
the phone on the first ring, which is not a good thing when there is a human
on the other end. The screaming modem gets rid of telephone solicitors
really well, ;-) but I don't think our friends and family like it too much.
I am sure this is a very common problem with thousands of linux users who do
not have dedicated internet access, and need to share dial up access with
voice telephone service.
What fifo or other command can I send to diald, so that it still dials out
as normal, but does not answer incoming calls? The man page or even the
diald home www page is not clear on this? Thanks in advance for any
ideas...

The dos setup program was on my Gateway Restore CD (3C5x...exe). First, I
found the options (/?). Then, I took the card out of pnp mode
(/pnp:disabled) and had the program find the proper settings (/auto). If you
don't have a similar disk, I would try the 3com site.
Of course, it was necessary to re-install the modem when using Windows as
its settings had changed. The card worked with Linux without other changes.

Matt,
I have had success with two of these card by building the driver into the
kernel which gets eth0 then loading the module (with parameters) for eth1.
Now if I could just get them to work with 2.2.x!

I thought this might merit a look in the BIOS, and did take a look.
PhoenixBios setup Utility shows an entry for PCI settings, three

Enable master [x] disabled (all three)
I don't know what enable or disable master is all about but tried
enableing on all three. Nothing changed, so reset to original

much. And since this machines network adaptor works when booted into

Hope this is enough material for someone knowledgeable on networking,

What? Windows users are supposed to think? I was told that Windows

What Linux and atheism have in common, that which their
advocates most energetically embrace and their detractors
most vociferously vilify, is that they both encourage
