If you are using a proxy server to connect to the internet , try
changing the ftp port in netscape to that used by the HTTP protocol

Subject: How to install ipchains on RH5.2?
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 16:15:28 +0100
I got kernel 2.2.3 for my Red Hat 5.2 box. And in order to use IP masq I
need ipchains 1.3.8 according to the HOWTO
I've read the howto and from what I could figure out there was no other way
around the problem than installing ipchains-1.3.8
But there were NO instructions HOW to install them!!!
My question is..
How do I install ipchains???
Like.. Where should I unpack the .gz file? What files should I change? I've
said Y to everything I need to "y" when I configured the kernel.
When I run "man ipchains" I get nothing..
Please don't give me any URLs or "RTFM" replies.. Unless I've missed
something the installation instructions are simply not there..
Thanx!

Perhaps you should try explicitly setting the IRQ on the options line,
for example:
irq=10

Subject: Only 2 more _minor_ PPP problems!

Basically, my Redhat 5.2 PPP server is functioning. There are only 2 things
left that I need to figure out. The first is getting the PAP to do the
AUTO_PPP. More on that down below. The other thing is getting the DNS
entries out to my clients. On my Win '9x box, I can put the DNS numbers in
for our campus by hand, but I'd rather the server deliver them to the
client. It's delivering the IP from the options (options.ttyS#) and the
netmask (not really...), but I don't know how to make the options files(s)
send the client the DNS information. Maybe this isn't possible; I don't
know.
>chmod +s /usr/sbin/pppd as root.
Worked like a charm. Thanks.
>>The second problem I have is that it isn't routing my IP once I get logged
>>in via PPP. I can't ping or telnet, etc. I _am_ receiving my IP number
>? run proxyarp as a pppd option on the linux box.
This option was already set.
>Make sure IPforwading in on. (etc/sysconfig/network FORWARD_IPV4=yes)
This option was _NOT_ set. It is now, and it works wonderfully. Thanks.
>>netmask 255.255.254.0
>Weird netmask. why the 254 rather than 255.
That's the netmask for the subnet the server is on. It's working now, even
though it's setting my '9x machine to FF.FF.00.00. No complaints - I just
wish I knew a) why it was sending the wrong one b) why it works.
>You have to decide how ou want them to log on-- whetehr with PAP or CHAP
>(better) or login. If with PAP or CHAP use AutoPPP in
>/etc/mgetty*/login.config.
In the following file:
/usr/local/etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config
I uncommented this line:
/AutoPPP/ - a_ppp /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login kdebug 7 debug
But I still don't seem to be able to get the PAP working. I may not have
compiled the mgetty with the -DAUTO_PPP option done correctly. If I didn't,
exactly what do I put in the Makefile to have it do the AutoPPP?
This shows where I attempted to do it, not knowing what I was doing:
# If you want to support incoming FidoNet calls, add -DFIDO.
# If you want to auto-detect incoming PPP calls (with PAP authorization),
# add -DAUTO_PPP. Not needed if PPP callers want to get a real "login:"
# prompt first. Don't forget to activate the /AutoPPP/ line in login.config!
#
#CFLAGS=-Wall -O2 -pipe -DSECUREWARE -DUSE_POLL
CFLAGS=-O2 -Wall -pipe -DAUTO_PPP
#CFLAGS=-O -DSVR4
#CFLAGS=-O -DSVR4 -DSVR42
#CFLAGS=-O -DUSE_POLL
#CFLAGS=-Wall -g -O2 -pipe
I think after I get mgetty recompiled, with the -DAUTO_PPP option right,
I'll be able to get my seamless login. After that and pushing the DNS
entries to the client, it ought to work fine.
Thanks for the past help and any future help you guys can offer.

First, you will need to provide us with much more information. What
distribution and version are you running? What card did you have? What is
the chipset of the card you have now?
A basic answer, is that you will have to install the driver for your new
card, and netconfig it. This should be after removing you old card driver.
Depending on your distribution, there may be easier methods.

Thanks, but I already tried what you suggested... no luck I'm afraid.
All I can think is that my cable (going from 25 pin --> 9 pin) is the
problem.... I've got another box laying around that needs some work to get
going, but it has a 25 pin comm port, so I'll try that as soon as I get it
fixed up.

Subject: Firewall & NT RAS Server.
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 15:44:09 -0000
My IT Manager has decided that our NT RAS Server needs extra security.
According to a paper I've read, there are three ways to improve the
security:
Dialback Modems - NT RAS already provides this mechanism.
Digital ID Cards - V. Expensive - However does provide additional security.
Access Firewall - ?
The third option is what we our focusing on at the moment, we're hoping to
use Linux to add (cheaply) some extra security to our RAS server.
However, looking into this, it seems the NT RAS is already acting as a
firewall providing:
two stage access - one for ras - one for the network.
ip range scopes
hours people can access the service.
encryption, etc?
Can a Firewall provide extra security since the RAS server would be on a
different ip segment, or is the only alternative for extra protection for
our RAS server - Digital ID cards?
Any suggestions/information would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking
for an over techical explanation.
Thanks

XFree86 xterm does this - set NumLock, makes the keypad work.
(I've recently made changes to integrate NumLock better, by separating the
PC-style and VT220-style keys).
The XFree86 3.3.3 xterm supports ANSI color and VT220 emulation

I would be surprised if Linux didn't shutdown. The syntax can be a
little tricky until you get used to it, but I assume you got it right.
My distribution (rh5.2) has a funny mouse thing: Linux just woudn't
shutdown! But what was happening was that gpm wouldn't end until I
moved the mouse! Fine if I'm at the console but a pain in the ass
remotely. But if you kill gpm manually and then shutdown it worked
fine.
