Well don't I feel like a dunce.

Thank you for that Michael I just checked my
Win95 settings and yes it shouldn't be
203.17.244.11 it should be 203.17.224.11

I just wasted a whole weekend and countless phone
calls to my ISP for one little typo.

I guess it can happen to anyone :-)

Regards
Harry

As an aside why was I getting responses from two
other IP's when I tried pinging 203.17.244.11

I've got a 3com 509B Combo ISA working quite nicely under linux and
win95, I shouldn't think you'll have a problem with it under nt either.

if you can still get them that is..

I would say that if the Win9x computer is able to connect to the WinNT
shares, the problem is on the Samba end. All I can suggest is to make sure
encrypted passwords are enabled and also make sure you have the Wintel
computers (WinNT and Win9x) listed in /etc/hosts on the Linux machine.

See Clifford's note. You'll have to change the parameter "name
<username>" to reflect the changed username. Since it does not find any
entry matching <username> - neither for PAP nor for CHAP - it does
refuse to authenticate itself.

Pass the options "novj" and "novjccomp" to pppd. How this is be done
does depend on your setup. It could be at the command line or in
/etc/ppp/options.ppp0 or ... Refer to the script you call to dial for

Thanks, I thought there should be any reason why qpopper wouldn't do
the job.
Back to the original question "why doesn't qpopper work under Linux":
When you setup qpopper in Linux, you have to consider which way your
Linux is configured.
If Linux uses /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files for authentication,
you have to compile qpopper differently:

./configure --enable-specialauth

and then "make" and that's it. So far mine seems to work fine.
In Solaris, you don't have to do that.

Subject: Netgear RH348 and "no link beat" problem with tulip-based NIC
Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 16:45:46 -0600

Using a stock RH5.2 install, I have a machine setup with two NICs. One IP
address is fixed and will connect to a hub to serve an internal LAN. The
second NIC is an SMC EtherPower and is attempting to use dhcp to obtain a
dynamic address from a Netgear RH348 ISDN router. (Model RH348 is also a 4
port hub).

When I directly connect the second NIC to one of the router/hub's ports
(straight cable), I get a problem during the dhcp initialization. Both the
tulip and the de4x5 driver report that they can't find a 10baseT link beat
and switch to 10base2 and subsequently fails to initialize the card.

Here's the kicker: If I connect the router/hub to the uplink port of any old
Ethernet hub, then connect that second NIC to the hub (instead of directly
to the router), everthing is cool - using either driver.

What is that cheap little hub providing that the expensive router/hub isn't?
A link beat for 10baseT seems to be the answer. But, then again, maybe
not? I have success with other network cards (Intel EtherExpress) plugged
directly into the router/hub. Is it just that these drivers don't do the
same checking for a link beat as the tulip and de4x5 drivers?

I've got options and a workaround - but I remain puzzled. Has anyone dealt
with this before or care to share info on the link beat and how NIC drivers
deal with them?

Jason

Using Netscape under WINDOWS 95 with the same ISP account gives me no

Strangley enough, the newsgroups loaded the first time I ran Netscape

The lights flash on the modem - as if it's trying to get something.

The MAIL and NAVIGATOR portions of Netscape are working OK under Linux.

If these are text files you are trying to view then it's probably the
cr/lf differences between Unix and Windoze that's causing the problem.
Try using Programmers File Editor or UltraEdit to view the files.
Both will convert between Unix and DOS file types.

Well i'm not sure if this is the "right" answer , but i know it works
and its what i would do.
make sure you're console..cuz if you're over a telnet/ssh session and
something goes wrong, then you'll
have no remote access to the box.

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 netmask xx.xx.xx.xx yy.yy.yy.yy

Replace the xx.xx.xx.xx with the subnet mask and the yy.yy.yy.yy with
the ip that
you want assigned to the card.

that should work, at least it does for me running RH 5.2 kernel 2.2.5
with a 3c509b.

you can view to see if it took or not by just typing in:
/sbin/ifconfig

That will be temporary though, when you reboot it will default back to
whats in your config files...
in RedHat these files are in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ in a file
called ifcfg-eth0.

it will look like:

DEVICE="eth0"
IPADDR="xx.xx.xx.xx"
NETMASK="255.255.255.248"
NETWORK="yy.yy.yy.yy"
BROADCAST=zz.zz.zz.zz
ONBOOT="yes"

change the settings there, and when you reboot, it should keep your
changes..
Like i said this IS in Redhat so use at your own risk :) Hope this
helps some.

Scott.

   You are generally best off disabling the firewall stuff to make sure that
the network runs correctly first. With firewalling disabled can you ping
via IP? If so, then add in name support. Can you ping via name? Then add
in your firewall stuff. Now can you ping? If not, I think Bob's correct.
Looks like you have to add ICMP to your rules.

Actually defining :sh: in the printcap *should* do it - but it does not...
- the only thing that I can think of - is because redhat's printool is
redirecting to a filter file with an if (input filter)
statement :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter: *and* since in the
man page and HOWTO it is specifying :sh: as the final argument in the
entry - it is ignoring it... don't know if that floats - I played with
positioning it before and after the filter redirections tyo no avail - it
may need to be defined in that actual filter itself...

You just need a local webserver.

http://www.acme.com/software/thttpd/ is a nice full-blown server

work.
But I could go into great detail about how badly MSWindows9x bites, I'll save it
