I would like to use LDAP as a directory server for internal conferences
in our intranet. People from outside will dial into the network and want
to start a conference, without knowing the other persons IP address, so
they need a directory service.
Does anybody know how to configure OpenLDAP, so that it can be used as
the directory server for Microsoft NetMeeting?
I'm running S.u.S.E. Linux 6.0 with OpenLDAP 1.2.3.

Hi Patrick,

are you using the firewall and masquerading functions? Whatch out that
you configure the network to be protected by the firewall in the correct
way (check /etc/rc.config for that), otherwise you might just deny the
request you want to let through).

Bye, Peter

You can avoid this by entering the info in the BASE section of ldap.conf.

Hi,
I just upgraded my harddrive. Now, my IP masq does not work!
I have RD 5.2 and my linux box can ping the win98 machines and win98 can
ping the linux box.
The Linux box can ping outside and i can browse with the linux box but not
with win98 machines. Win98 machines can ping each other.

Anybody can tell me where I should be looking for problems?

the dhcpd client daemon starts up with a broadcast (I think default is
255.255.255.255, I also suspect that it is configurable), and in this
case I suspect that this gets forwarded. I got around this problem by
aliassing the ethernet port through which the dhcp rtequests come in, to
255.255.255.255 (so far no negative side effects). Another possibility
is to configure either the firewall not to forward broadcast requests
out of your local system

Delete this. You are confusing things by stating that this is on
127.0.0.0 when in networks (below) you say localnet is 192.168.1.0.

Delete loopback as well - this should be in /etc/networks.

Should be 'loopback' as the name of the network.

Do an 'ifconfig' to check that both interfaces 'eth0' and 'lo' are set
up as you expect. Using 'ping' with IP addresses should always work if
the hardware is set up.

Well thats all that came to mind.....

One sort of oddball thing to keep in mind. With my cable modem (yes, I
know you have DSL, but they're both really routers, not modems) the modem
knows how many IPs it is supposed to allow through. But it doesn't know
precisely which IPs. Every time the modem gets reset it simply watches
for the first x number of IPs it sees. If one of those is a 192.* then
that will eat up a slot.

I'm sure each model of cable modem and DSL modem handles this
differently. But since you have everything plugged into one hub the
modem is going to see the local traffic. Keep that in mind if suddenly
your modem starts ignoring traffic from your static IP.

Me, I bought a second $15 NIC. It seems the most straightforward, and
there's lots of help available here on getting it set up.

Has anyone had any success connecting to an LDAP server from Netscape
4.6.1
under redhat 6.0 ?

Have it working under NT4 with netscrape 4.5.x in the office, same
config under linux gives me the following error.

Failed to bind to 'Directory Name' due to LDAP Error "Can't connect to
LDAP sever (0x58)"

Ran tcpdump, and at the point I try the LDAP query nothing goes out of
the interface so I don't think I'm being rejected by the server.

Any ideas.

No, can't say that I have, netscape on my linux box is my first
experience with netscape, starting about a month ago. As you can see
from my sig, I didn't come into linux from a winblows box.

OTOH is there some reason 4.61 will not work on a 486? I'd assume it
might be a bit slower in some routines, and faster in others, and a heck
of a lot more 'compatible' with the web pages he will hit with it
*today*. Whats wrong with that? Just keeping up with the jones's in my
view.

FWIW, I ran the 4.07 that comes with RH5.2, for about 3 days. It locked
up, requireing me to kill it 20+ times in that 3 days. I couldn't wait
to get a fresher copy with some of the bugs spayed. (Or sprayed, as the
case may be). In 2 weeks plus, I haven't had to send a kill toward
4.61 yet (knock on wood, my skull will do).

I also needed to be able to get into my bank and take care of business.
4.07 with its puny attempt at SSL wasn't up to the job, 4.61 with
strong usa/ca SSL is just the ticket.

I'm probably doing something wrong aren't I?

Cheers, Gene

You upgraded *to* 5.2, or *from* 5.2? From 5.2 to 6.0, there's a major
change in the way you do IP Masquerading. You'll probably have to read
the FAQ.

If dhcpcd is running it will fill in the name servers for you (at
least they do for me here on MediaOne in the Boston area. The trick
for me was to get dhcpcd running. I ended up editting
  /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup
and adding right after where pump is started

    if [ "$BOOTPROTO" = dhcp -a "$ISALIAS" = no ]; then
echo -n "Using DHCP for $DEVICE..."
        /sbin/dhcpcd
    fi

That did it here.

I guess I should have explained it more carefully.
I am running RD 5.2 and I just installed it on a new(bigger) hard drive.
I am missing something somewhere and cannot figure out what it is.
My question is this. If you can ping to your win98 machines from linux box
and can surf the net usnign your linux box but not your win98 machines and
your win98 machines can see each other then, what could be wrong?

Here is what I have in my rc.firewall file.

/sbin/depmode -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc

ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.2/32 -D 0.0.0.0
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.0.3/32 -D 0.0.0.0

Am I missing something here?
