What distribution are you using? RH6.0 has an easy to use TK(?) tool

Subject: 2nd 3c509 card has hw config errors
Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 11:21:13 -0600
I'm having a devil of a time trying to get my 2nd NIC working properly.
Both cards are 3c509. I used 3Coms's DOS utility to change the IRQ and
address of the 2nd NIC to be different than the first one. At this point
I'm quite confident that my ifconfig addresses & route commands are
returning accurate results. But things aren't working, and here are the
symptoms:
1. Green light on eth1 card not lit, nor is light lit on the eth card of
W95 machine connected to eth1 on my private network.
2. As Ethernet HOWTO 1.3 notes, I found that cat /proc/net/dev shows a
non-zero carrier count AND cat /proc/interrupts shows a zero interrupt for
eth1. The Howto suggests either of these two things are indicative of a
hardware config error, but I couldn't find any appropriate remedies in the
rest of the document.
3. Boot message detects eth1 at interrupt and address I'm expecting.
Ifconfig shows eth1 to be up with the ip addresses, netmask, and broadcast I
expect (ip=192.168.0.1, netmask = 255.255.255.0, broadcast = 192.168.0.255)
4. Can't ping the W95 box from linux box. W95 setup as 192.168.0.4;
gateway is 192.168.0.1
5. route shows an entry for: 192.168.0.0 with mask 255.255.255.0 going
thru eth1.
All ideas appreciated. tia

Subject: Weird PLIP error
Date: Tue, 06 Jul 1999 20:11:46 +0200
Hi,
I'm trying to get PLIP running on 2 slackware 3.6 boxes. It runs
perfectly on box A ( kernel 2.0.35),
but refuses to work on B (2.2.7). Besides the kernels, the software
configuration is the same. Both of the boxes use a ECP parport, each
0x378, irq 7 (told to the kernel via LILO). On A, the plip0 device is
created like it should, but B refuses to do so. The relevant dmesg info
from B:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [SPP,ECP,ECPPS2] (like on
the working box)
parport0: unable to get hardware to register
plip0. (NOT like on the working box)
plip: no devices registered
I tried both compiling PLIP into the kernel, and modularizing it. Both
had the same effect.
Can anyone give me any hints or info?
Thanks in advance,
Jef Van den broeck

Assuming the card will work with the ne2k module, use linuxconf to configure
the card. Try pinging the card. As for the connection to your ISP are you
talking via phone modem or DSL/Cable?

If it's an external drive, I've heard of SCSI sharing switches.

I just spoke with tech support from RedHat -we have a premium subscription
. They gave us also the casckets -:) BUT he told me that the support by
phone it's valid only for basic instalations. This type of problem need pay
per incident and he pointed me to their web site to search using Google and
a mini howto.. Thanx for this answer. I don't see the difference between my
600 bucks and another one for 60 but without support. At least you know it
from start.
As to update my question if I do an ifconfig I can see the eth1:0 card fine
but the lines RX packets.... and TX packets ... are missing.
As a workaround the only solution that I see is to install a third card and
assign this ip on it. Still waiting for a better answer from this free tech
support.Eventually I will fw to support.redhat.com
Thanx

Subject: Conflict between Accton EN166x MPX2 ethernet card and Soundblaster AWE32
Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 23:03:25 +0200
I installed a Accton EN166x MPX2 ethernetcard in a free ISA slot of my
computer. I turned it on and first booted Windows (I use both Linux and
Windows). I had to change the I/O from 220 to 240, because 220 is already in
use by my AWE32. And addionately, I had to change the irq to 12. After a
whole series of reboots the card finally worked for Windows. What remains is
Linux... Automagically there were a couple of lines added to
/etc/isapnp.conf about my newly installed ethernet card. It said I/O 220 and
irq 3. I changes the values to 240 c.q. 12, rebooted, but it still does'n't
work. I'll cut 'n' paste the exact error message, but there was some error
in /etc/isapnp.conf
Who can help me with this problem?
Please do NOT send a e-mail to the e-mail address from the header of this
message, as I won't read it then.

If you can find out what chip set it uses (which may be as easy as looking
at the chips on the ethernet card), go to
http://cesdis1.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ to see if there is a driver
available for that chip.

when you do an install with "everything", you have 2 ftp servers, which is
bad because it conflicts.
I suggest you remove wu-ftpd and install BeroFtpd instead, it's more secure
and has lots more options.

Hi all,
Does any one knows what causes the "linksys etherfast" pcmcia card
to run slow in some networks?
I was running it in a 10 Base T network and it was going fine. Now I
am trying to run in another 10BT network and the connection is awfully
slow!
Is there a "network related" setting that I should change in the
pcmcia configuration files?
The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 3500 running RH 6.0. Thank you all in

Subject: SuSE 6.0 Masquerading/Forwarding Problems (long)
Date: Tue, 6 Jul 1999 23:47:20 +0100
I have two machines: 1 client running Windows NT4 Wks SP5 (Yuk ! I need
it for work, honest!) and one internet and file server running SuSE Linux
6.0 upgraded to kernel 2.2.5 (with all the other packages recommended on
the SuSE web site).
I have the machines networked with the NT client at IP address
192.168.100.1 and the Linux server at 192.168.100.2.
My server is set up to use diald to connect to my ISP on demand. My ISP
(Demon Internet in the UK) assigns a fixed IP address 194.222.52.119.
I have successfully set things up so that the NT box can share printers
and files with the linux box using Samba. Also, I have squid running on
my Linux box which works OK, I can fire up a browser under NT and the
linux box connects to the net and serves me web pages OK. I can also
download files OK via my browser. I am running a caching nameserver on my
Linux box which works OK. NT is configured to use this as its nameserver
and it works great.
E-mail works perfectly too, my linux box acting as a POP3 server. Also, I
have leafnode running to access Demon's news server.
OK, so what is my problem I hear you ask.
Well, I would like to be able to run FTP packages such as WS_FTP Pro from
my NT box to access the net and also to be able to directly access
Demon's news server for on-line browsing using Agent or Gravity. I also
need to be able to run Dreamweaver and this works using FTP to download
and upload web pages to Demons homepage server. However, I cannot get my
setup to work correctly in this fashion. I can only acces the net via my
browser.
If I try to ping outside my intranet, I get timeout errors. For example,
if I try to ping demon's news server from my NT box with :
ping news.demon.co.uk
I get :
Pinging 194.222.52.119 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
I also get the same result if I ping my ISP allocated address of
194.222.52.119.
FTP fails with a -> ftp: connect:Connection timed out error.
However, if I ping these addresses from the Linux box, everything works
OK. Somehow, my requests from NT are getting lost inside my linux server.
I have compiled my kernel according to the Masqerading HOWTO and have set
up my firewall setup script as follows:
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_cuseeme
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_vdolive
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.100.0/24 -j MASQ

I think you should consider the alliance of Germany, Italy, and Japan
before labeling these all regional conflicts. Germany also had a
nonagression pact with Russia that was used by Stalin to prepare for war
as quickly as possible. I believe, but am not certain, that the Axis were
also in Africa well before the entrance of the United States into the
melee. Lastly, Spain's civil war should be recalled.
How many countries/continents besides our's does it take to become a WORLD
war? (and it could be argued that we were involved from early on with the
leasing of ships)

Subject: Local VHosts
Date: Tue, 06 Jul 1999 17:07:48 -0600
The setup:
Linux Redhat 5.2, 2.3.2 kernel (brave, eh?)
Basic 56K Dial-Up account
BNC 2.4.6
My own domain completely hosted on a remote machine that I have root on
(all services, including named)
What I want to do:
I want to be able to use subdomain.mydomain.com as my hostname, instead
of cust101.dial-up.isp.com. As I see it, there are two possible ways to
do this: 1. Fool every name server into resolving my IP to
subdomain.mydomain.com or 2. Set up subdomain.mydomain.com as a VHost on
my local machine.
I would prefer the first option if possible so I could use the host for
all outgoing connections, not just ones that allow VHost binding, such
as IRC. I have figured out the client side part of VHosts, I just need
to figure out the server part. Any help or starting point would be
greatly appreciated.
