Are the "dumb terminals" really dumb terminals or are they
pcs. If they're pcs why not run samba on the linux server
and, allowing access to a common share, install the windows
apps to the share from a pc. If the apps are network
versions you'll probably just have to install the clients on
each pc that accesses them. If not, each app would have to
be installed at each and every pc so users could run them.
You know, otherwise you'll get error messages about missing
dlls etc.

The D-Link DFE-530 uses the via-rhine driver. The DE-530 uses the tulip
driver. Seems to me that the tulip driver has been part of the drivers
included with the kernel for a long time and the via-rhine recently been
added to the 2.2.x kernel source now. I know that Slackware 4.0 seems
to have support for it anyway. All I had to do to use the standard ide
kernel was go into /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncomment the right line to
get the via-rhine driver to load.
If you can't seem to locate it in your distro go here:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/
Instructions on how to compile it are at the very end of the via-rhine.c
file.

Boyd,
All of the doc that I have seen has indicated the new PCI/DMA Token Ring cards
will not work. I have gotten the old (really old) ISA cards with jumpers to
work in the docking station of my laptop.
Best of luck!!!

I have a successful setup using IPChains and IPMasq to allow multiple
machines with 192.168 addresses to share a single routable address. Ftp
and RealAudio were taken care of with the ipmasq kernel modules.
Any idea on how to get PC Anywhere through? I get the sinking feeling it
embeds an address in the outgoing packet. Without an ip masq module to
handle this, are there any other options. Or am I wrong and can this be
dealt with using autofw or portfw?
Thanks.

Hi everyone,
In a script I am trying to write, I need to know the IP number
assigned to my second network adaptor, eth1. It is dynamically
assigned via DHCP.
I am awk deficient. I bet there is somebody out there who can give me
the awk command I need to do this off the top of their head. Could

Make sure that you do not use pap, +pap, chap or +chap on the server
because those ask the other MACHINE (not user) to authenticate itself.
The user authentication is handled by the 'auth' and 'login' options, but
you still need pap-secrets set up properly. However, I have never been
able to get chap80 to work, so you might make sure that the remote is
using plain text passwords instead of encrypted.
I have an example at http://www.xnet.com/~efflandt/linux/dialin.txt

Without knowing what version of sendmail (or distro) you are using, you
might want to check the following files:
/etc/mail/relay_allow
/etc/mail/ip_allow
/etc/mail/access
and so on. These files specify what network adddress, IP addresses etc...
are allowed to "relay" mail off of the sendmail system. By default,
especially with current RedHat distro versions, sendmail (by default) does
NOT allow relaying except from the local machine or for local delivery.
Sounds like your almost there...

I'm having some problems getting linux networking to be stable.
Anytime I try to FTP almost anything (or do some pings), I start
getting 'hda interrupt lost' which repeats slowly.
The system is an IBM Power Series 830 (mod 6050). It has no cards
installed and is stock except for some additional memory and
replacing the HD with a larger one.
The system is stable, except when I do anything with ethernet.
PPP networking (via the serial port) causes no problems.
I'm running a 2.2.10 kernel than I compiled.
Below is the contents of several of the proc files. Below that is
information from the owners manual whichs lists what IBM thinks the
interrupts, dma & ioports should be.
Can someone with more knowledge than I, look this over and tell me
if anything looks wrong. One thing not shown here, that I thought odd,
is the ioport address for the ethernet adapter. Below its listed as
1000200 in the ioport list. If I do an ioconfig, it shows it as 'Base
address: 0x200'.

I don't know what your knowledge level is, but the basics should be
covered in a FAQ or how-to on setting up PPP under linux. The trick
will be to get some information unique to your ISP, in this case AOL.
One piece of information that you wil need is the Domain Name Server
(DNS). I was trying to find out this information to help a friend of
mine who is also afflicted with AOL membership. In his case I was
trying to setup dialup networking under Windows 98. I called their tech
support line and they basically said that it can't be done. Which may
or may not be true. At any rate, a lookup of aol.com's DNS reveals it
to be 198.81.17.232 and 205.188.157.232. I do not know about their news
server or mail server, but try dialing into aol using minicom, and try
logging in and see what happens. You may have to type in ppp or some
such thing to start PPP. Give it a shot.

Using samba you can synchronize users passwords between the
linux box and the nt server. As far as sharing other account

Viking External at CompUSA, for around $100, I got one a few weeks
ago and it works great. Watch out if you have win98, my Win 98
crashed because I forgot to remove the old modem driver before I
booted with the new modem. Win 98 will need for you to install
the driver on the disk. With Linux it works beautifully.

I am having the same problem. Although I'm not as confident that I have IPX
set up properly.
But, no, I can't ncpmount at all (if I'm doing it right).
I have a fresh install of RedHat 6 and I do have the tcp/ip working properly
but can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong/missing with IPX. We have
a Netware environment with mostly NT and Win9x machines and I've read where
the autoconfigure might get hosed when Win95 clients are present. How do I
configure it manually? I'm not clear on what numbers I need to put where in
Linuxconf to configure it manually. Can I pick off the info from one of the
NT boxes somehow (winipcfg maybe?)?
I've read the Linux User's Guide, the Network Admin Guide, the IPX How-to,
the Net3 How-to and a few files from the ncpfs package I'm getting no where.
Help please.

If you are not running DNS on your Linux box, you will need to add all the
clients that are going to access the linux box in your /etc/hosts file on
the Linux box. Otherwise, make sure you are loading the proper in-addr.apra
zones on your DNS server.
What is happening is the linux resolver is trying to do a reverse lookup on
the IP address that is trying to connect. i.e given the IP address... return
the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). The standard search order for the
resolver is 1) /etc/hosts, 2) DNS. The delay you are experiancing is due to
the DNS timeouts.

The isdn line comes into the house away from the linux box. If I run
that line to the linux box then I have to run other lines to the rest of
the phones in the house. If I use a router I can connect through the
existing network (cable). It's working fine from windows, but I'd like

I'm still thinking, but I may rewire the whole place for a better
solution than booting windows right now. Including what've you've

make the connection from Linux.
