Hi...
Strange problem: our web server, www.uccor.edu.ar, at times disappears
and cannot be reached from the outside (not by www.uccor.edu.ar nor
by its IP, not by httpd nor other means).
When I connect to another machine on the net there, and do a ping from
this machine to the webserver, everything wakes up, and the webserver
is suddenly visible again.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
John

Subject: Ping not getting back through router
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 15:56:15 GMT
Gents,
I have been sweating to configure Redhat 5.0 as a router between my
office lan (10.0.2.0 on 10base2) and my isdn pbx (192.168.42.1 on
10baseT).
Redhat now has 2 lan cards up and running, and is (I think) configured
for routing.
When I try and ping the pbx from Redhat it responds immediately, and a
status light on the pbx blinks to indicate lan traffic.
when I try and ping Redhat from the office LAN I can get a response
from either (both) of the LAN cards: ne1000 on 10.0.2.100 and ne2000
clone on 192.168.42.100
When I try to ping the pbx from the office LAN I get no response; but
the pbx status light blinks to show traffic.
I guess the ping is getting past Redhat on the way to the pbx, but the
response is being lost in Redhat on the way back.
Anyone have any ideas where to look please?

After some tinkering I was able to get users to upload to incoming as
well as being able to create directories, and uploading in those
directories.
I used the following entries to do this
upload /home/ftp /incoming yes root ftpers 0777 dirs
upload /home/ftp /incoming/* yes root ftpers 0777 dirs
The only problem now is how to prevent users from uploading to the
root of /incoming. I want to force users to create directories and
upload to those directories.
I tried
upload /home/ftp /incoming no
upload /home/ftp /incoming/* yes root ftpers 0777 dirs
It doesn't allow me to upload to incoming, but it also doesn't allow
me to create dirs in /incoming :(
Any ideas?

If it isn't installed yet, you'll need to install
the KDENetwork package.

Im installing RH 5.0.The drivers for my FastEthernet Card I found on
the web of the manufacturer(VIA-Taiwan).I followed the instructions:
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c fet3043.c
cp ./fet3043.o /usr/src/linux/modules/fet3043.o
It cant do the copy because /usr/scr/linux doesnt exist in RH.
So where should I copy fet3043.o?
Would really appreciate any help.

You want the app IPMASQADM for IPCHAINS. I just got it up today to
open some ports up on a machine behind my ipchains firewall.
Here is a link to the IP masqurading resource page:
http://members.home.net/ipmasq/
Here is a link to a modified masq howto with an example pretty much
describing exactly what u want:
http://members.home.net/ipmasq/ipmasq-HOWTO-1.65.html
Here is the section of that howto giving an example how to pass thru the
firewall to a webserver with an internal 192.168 IP address:
http://members.home.net/ipmasq/ipmasq-HOWTO-1.65-6.html#ss6.8
Hope this helps

I don't have a good answer to this question but if you're just dialing
up an ISP then you don't need the auth or the noauth option. It's very
unlikely that the ISP is configured to authenticate itself to it's
clients.

Mark,
You seem to have part of my problem fixed. But if anyone can help it would
be greatly appreciated. No I'm not a linux guru (obviously) by any means.
I'm fairly new to it. But I have a Dell 486 with an ISA PnP NE2000 card
(two in fact) and I can get neither of them to work in Linux. I've been
reading out of a few books I have and I tried setting up everything I think
I needed too in Linux to get the Card working. But I am having no luck and
I'm sure I'm leaving something out.
I've tried using several different programs within Xwindows. Linuxconf,
netconf, Network Configurator(which looks basically the same as netconf).
I have a ADSL connection coming into my hub, and all my boxes going into the
hub with the gateway and DNS servers setup giving them all Internet access.
I'm trying to get Linux set up as a Web Server using Apache most likely.
but I need to get the NIC working! I have a Static IP which I assigned to
it.
But I set up the interface as eth0, with it's static IP, and I set it to
active but it allways goes back to inactive for some reason.
Plus there is a lo interface already in there that I can't remove which is
active.
Anyhow when I reboot it says Delaying initialization of eth0.
I don't know what to do! I don't know how Drivers work with Linux, so I
assume I'm not setting up drivers some how! I have Redhat 5.2 but I just DL
6.0 and plan on installing it. but I would like to figure out how to set up
the NIC after the OS is installed. Even though I've been told its a lot
easier to get hardware working if you do it at OS install time.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Subject: RH SECURE WEB SERVER 2.0 + RH 6.0 PROBLEMS
Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 17:55:40 GMT
Hi,
I have a problem with RH 6.0 and RH SECURE WEB SERVER 2.0.
I am setting up a secure web server on a machine hosting multiple name
based virtual domains. I had this configuration with no ssl working
with no problems. I installed all the updates for RH 6.0 according to
the information on RH's page about the secure web server. I then
proceeded to install the secure web server off the cd. It didn't
succeed because it found newer versions of the programs and libraries it
is dependant on. So I proceeded to install it with rpm from the command
line. The installation was successful. When I restarted apache, it
failed and gave me an error message (forgive me please for not writing
it down) something to the effect that "mod_ssl.c was an invalid
module". So I uninstalled it to restore it to its original
configuration before I installed the secure web server. I had to
reinstall apache from the RH 6.0 cd. Once I did this, it ran the
default configuration with no problem. I configured my name based
virtual domains, and when I restarted apache, it failed with no error
message. I checked it's status by typing "httpd status -S" and it told
me this "httpd dead but subsys locked" I removed the name based virtual
domains and it started successfully. Now when I try to browse the web
with netscape, it does not connect to any websites internal or abroad.
I can not ping this machine, nor can I telnet into it. Its networking
system is completely screwed. I could really use some insight into this
from someone who know's what this is all about.
Thanks,
Dwayne Croteau

In the absence of restrictive pppd options you should only need to set
pppd suid, locate the ppp-go script where regular users can execute it,
and make sure that the chat command is specified with the full path:
/usr/sbin/chat . Depending on the specifics you may need to specify your
ISP username with "user <username>" rather than with "name <username>?
If this fails then we'll need to see the ppp-on script and any ancillary
scripts it may call as well as the /etc/ppp/options file if it has any
options in it.
The ppp-off script should work for whichever user launched pppd, at
least it works that way here. You'll also likely want to locate it
where a regular user can execute it.
